The Running Thread - 2016

Back to running: Yesterday the movie trailer for "Patriots Day" was released, which is a movie about the Boston Marathon staring Mark Wahlberg. It is scheduled to hit theaters December 21, 2016.

Another movie to be released about the Boston Marathon is from the same folks who created "Spirit of the Marathon". It is set to hit theaters in 2017. http://bostonmarathonfilm.com/

I am looking forward to both movies because obviously I am obsessed with the Boston Marathon.

QOTD: Do you use a fuel belt / hydration system for your runs? Do you use them for every run, or just runs of "x" miles or "x" time? Do you also run your races with them?

Yes. I got a Flipbelt last Christmas and I LOVE the thing! It's perfect for my phone, keys, and GUs! I used to/still occasionally use a Nathan 2x 9oz bottle pack. But the last two half marathons I opted not to use the latter and felt okay with it. But I wear my flip belt for all my runs simply as a way to store my phone and keys.

I have a single 16oz bottle belt but the damn thing ALWAYS rides up when filled up above the half way point, which is sad because that is the belt I'd likely use the for water on normal, humid/hot training runs. I've been thinking of using a throwaway bottle for my NUUN drink. The last two half marathons I didn't have it but I've felt better during my runs when I consume it.

Generally, anything run 10 miles or longer I fuel. Normally I run two 5-mile loops and just carry a GU and have water and Gatorade on my front lawn so when I enter the second loop I can just grab and go.

For my longer runs, I usually plan a route where I can run by my car a couple of times and leave my water or powerade in the car. For regular runs, I usually don't carry anything unless I am planning to be out for more than an hour. I don't do well in heat, so my summer runs are usually on the treadmill and I just have a water bottle near by.

For most races, I tend to rely on the water stops unless it is going to be warmer than I like. Then I have a little 4 oz. bottle that fits in my flip belt. I used to have a little handheld with a strap, but I hate carrying anything. I have ended up giving it to my son for when we run together.

You are probably right, which makes it even more shameful that the SEC front office cancelled the game. All LSU can do is win out and make this a problem.

Being a native Floridian Vol fan, all I can say is "Geaux Tigers!" I have not followed the evolution of the game cancellation, been following all of my friends' and family's evacuations instead, but it wouldn't surprise me if a certain team was thinking strategy and not safety. If they were thinking safety, the game would have been moved or flat-out cancelled a lot sooner. It really doesn't matter if the minds in Gainesville believe UF is too far interior to suffer a direct hit and the weather is perfect Saturday, the state as a whole is going to be a mess when Matthew gets done with it and first responders will need to be elsewhere.

QOTD: Have you ever have a race cancelled for any reason at all? If so, why was it cancelled and did you get a refund from the race? What did you end up doing with the open weekend?

ATTQOTD: I have had a 5k cancelled once due to bad weather / lightning. Most races have a clause that money will not be refunded and that was the case for me. Some races do return the money or try to do something else, but in my case it was a small local 5k. I ended up taking the day off and getting a long run in on Sunday.

ATTQOTD: Never had a race cancelled, but came close twice. Once post-flash flood...race just turned into a mud run basically. The other was 30+ mph winds by the lake and they ended up not cancelling it. I did both because I'm either brave or stupid.

And here's something unrelated:
I struggled with where to post this...in my journal, in the running thread, not at all? But I thought here would be a good place.
I am really really excited about something I get to go do tonight and the opportunity was given to me by a member of our boards who has been extremely inspirational to me even though we've never met. It is bittersweet that I get to go do this fun thing tonight because I know the only reason is that she in currently injured and it really should be her getting to have this fun moment. Tonight I get to go on a date to the theatre with my husband to see the Chicago-based Hamilton and although I wish I could have @Keels teleported here to sit with me, it will be nice to go on a date with my hubby that does not involve leaving each other at mile one to go run our own races. Runners really are a great group of people, and I think @Keels really exemplifies that. I just wish I could pixie dust your injury away for you right now! So I guess the point of my rambling is to remind myself to not take for granted when I am healthy, when I am not being affected by these storms and when I have a really great support system of running friends. Thank you Thank you; let's go see something together when you (and maybe me too, eek) do run Chicago in the future years!

Do you have the flat water bottles for the flip belt? I'm wondering how well they work.

I know you were quoting someone else, but I thought I would add my two cents. I have one of the smaller bottles for my flip belt. It is easy to get in and out and doesn't bounce when I run. The only downfall for me is that my body heat warms up the water very quickly since the bottle is basically directly in contact with my body.

In the future, I may freeze an ounce of water in it the night before and see if it makes a difference.

ATTQOTD: I have never had one cancelled. But this summer in a 5k with my daughter we had to wait about an hour for a delayed start due to an incredible thunderstorm. It was very intense! You could feel the thunder not just hear it. So cool. My daughter got a PR that race to so it was a good day!

ATTQOTD: Never had one fully canceled, but it was close for Wine & Dine 2015, but instead of canceling they did let us run a shortened course. I was cranky about it at the time, but of course they really did the best they could under the circumstances.

Ditto, ZellyB! Ran W&D twice. In 2014, torrential rains but the race went on. In 2015, shortened course.

ATTQOTD: I had one race cancelled due to thunderstorms in the area 4-6 hours prior to the start of the race. The problem is they didn't cancel due to the storms. They cancelled because they didn't put up their equipment, and the storms damaged it. I tried to fight them on a refund, because I was so irritated. The storms weren't a surprise, and they waited until an hour before the race to call it. Their terms were very poorly written. In one place it said refunds would be given if cancelled by the organizer. In another it said if cancelled due to weather, no refunds. Why they put up the inflatable finish line and stuff when they knew these storms were supposed to bring high winds was beyond me.

ATTQOTD - I don't race a lot, so never had one cancelled. I have had many runs cancelled (by me) because weather conditions would have made the run extremely hazardous.

Never had a race cancelled. @ZellyB reminded me that I was at Wine and Dine last year where the race was delayed and shortened because of the weather.

ATTQOTD: I've been lucky to not have one cancelled, but I knew a guy who trained his tail off to run his first marathon which was the Dallas Marathon in 2013. It was cancelled due to weather so he went out on that Sunday and did a run of 26.2 miles. I felt really bad for him because he had worked so hard and didn't get everything that comes with race day.

ATTQOTD: I have had at least 3 that I can think of cancelled due to lightning. Fortunately on 2 of them I was waiting for race day registration due to the potential for bad weather. The last one was a 5K that I was supposed to run with DH so I did register us. We sat around waiting in the truck but it got cancelled. Then there was no lightning. :/ But they had to be safe I guess. Just like W&D last year. I was there for that shortened race too. After sitting around for so long and it being so humid, I was really relieved that it was shortened! (shhh! don't tell DD26 I said that! At the time I was appropriately outraged! :) )

All my cancelled races were local so we didn't do anything in their place.

Yesterdays QOTD: I have a handheld I use on almost all of my training runs. I refill it at the park if needed. For races I bring a normal plastic water bottle cause I like having the option of throwing it away if I get tired of holding it. I keep fuel in my sparkle skirt. Cant stand belts of any sort so far.

Todays QOTD: Nope. I've never had an event cancelled!

ATTQOTD: Another W&D 2015 survivor here. :) That is the only race that I have had affected by weather so far.

3 cancelled and 1 shortened due to lightning?! Could you please post a list of your upcoming races so that we know what not to register for? :scared1::umbrella:

I am still not sure what to do about my long run this weekend. I am supposed to do 10 miles. I am 2 weeks out from my half and my plan calls for 10 miles this week and next for my longest long runs. I have a 5K race on Sunday, though. I don't think I'll really be able to do the 5K race if I do 10 miles tomorrow. I mean, I could finish it probably, but I don't think I'd be able to run much of it. :) I could try and tack on 7 miles in an unfamiliar-ish location after the race, but there's always a big food spread and a big raffle and stuff after this race, and I'd like to partake of that stuff.

Maybe I should just try and do 6-7 tomorrow and then the race on Sunday? Or suck it up and try to do 10 tomorrow and the race on Sunday? I don't want to injure myself, though. I don't ever run back-to-back days, and I'm a heavier pretty slow runner, so a 10 miler is a pretty big time on my feet investment at 2+ hours. I guess another option is to show up WAY early for the race (the race starts at 10, so it would not be like 3am early), try to do 6-7 before the race starts, and then plod my way through the race after my legs have stiffened up a little. :) Not that my final miles are ever very fast to begin with. ;)

Any suggestions which would be the best option? I'm guessing if I want the real benefit of a long run, it should be the "get there early and run a bunch before the race" option.
