The Running Thread - 2016

Busy trying to catch up today. Today is my 60 day mark to schedule FP+!!! Made the FP+ at 6:00 this morning and then had to rearrange my plan around it based on the times that I could get. One sad bit was I forgot to schedule FP for the last day of our trip, which just so happens to be the day the Thunder Mt reopens, and of course when I went to schedule it, nothing is available. :( However I am still looking forward the upcoming trip.

First time answering a question of the day!

ATTQOTD: I just started running, the Disneyland 5k was my first ever race and the training was the first time I ever ran! This forum has really helped me want to continue even though the race has come and gone!

So thank you everyone for that!

Welcome to the thread!

ATTQOTD: Encouragement, encouragement, encouragement! Just had my first 40 miles in 7 days!
Getting ready for a slow but steady Dopey in January with everyone's support.

Hitting a 40 mile week is a great feeling, congrats on your accomplishment!

Tri Tri Tri! I need another convert! :boat: :moped: :tiptoe:

So about a tri... well I may have mentioned a IM by the time I am 40 and without hesitation I got a "NO". You know what they say though... If at first you do not succeed, try, "TRI", again. I'll give it a few months before discussing the topic with her again.

In case anyone even remembers, I interviewed for a new job/promotion back on the 30th of August.
Well, I GOT THE JOB!!:banana::banana:
What a great way to start my vacation tomorrow!! :)

CONGRATS!!!!

ATTQOTD: I run in rD races because they combine two of my favorite things. I enjoy this board and this thread because they bring those things together in a community that feel warm and welcoming. This forum and/or thread have not changed what or how I approach running, but they have exposed me to people with whom I enjoy interacting. Have I learned things about running - absolutely (major props to @DopeyBadger ), but for me this is more about "us" than it is about "me".

I enjoy being a part of this community, and I thank you for having me.

This thing is glorious. It works on my tightest spots better than the foam rollers and the stick. It works the knots out of my calves so much better. It works my hamstrings better than the foam roller. It works the IT Band, hip flexors, and even the muscles next to the shin bone. The major complaint I have is that it pulls my leg hair but once you get used to it you don't even notice it and for the ladies it obvious isn't an issue. But, because I don't need to lay on the floor to use it I can sit in my bed while watching TV and use it, so it actually gets put to use.

Now that looks FANCY! And oooh look, pricey too. That must mean it's right up my alley! lol

I want to say a few things to any of the shy runners lurking here and not saying anything. I am one of you. My fastest time remains 3:05 in the Disneyland 1/2 although I don't consider that my PR since it contained no stops whatsoever and every race since has contained multiple picture and/or character stops. Don't be intimidated by how fast you aren't. Instead, take advantage of the opportunity to learn from some very fast runners who don't care how fast you aren't.

I can honestly say that my first 1/2 marathon was not a "fun" experience. It was something I had to overcome, endure, and accomplish. But every race since then has truly been fun. And part of that fun came from learning from runners here about how to cope with the mental part of the game and see the bigger picture. Don't let your fear of how fast you aren't hold you back. Because at the end of the day if you're wearing your medal around Disney, nobody cares that you were "slow." I've tried to persuade many who admired the medal that earning it wasn't the impossible task their mind made it out to be.

Difficult, yes? Impossible. Never. Walt Disney said it best: "It's kind of fun to do the impossible."

PREACH!! I love this. Even with my intervals I am slow. Getting faster, but I am never going to be fast. But I'm a communicator and a Gemini, so I have opinions and I'm not afraid to share them! HA

QOTD: How has your running or racing been influenced by anything you have read on this forum?

I don't even know where to start with this one. 1. It's so great to not feel alone in my run/walk journey. Thank you to all the other run/walkers (#gallowayforlife) 2. I never realized there were so many things to think about when it came to running. I've probably tried all of them. I'm not successful at many, but I do hear you guys in my head sometimes when I'm having a touch run. 3. I hate my job right now, so this thread is my escape with people that care about the same things I do! 4. Talking about running here, leads to reading about running other places online, which leads to feeling guilting if I'm not running regularly. So then I go run.

Wait, you can use a boat and a motor-scooter and then do the moon walk? I'm in!

SO. IN.

After the 60 day mark, my other daily visit besides this thread is obsessively checking what will open up so I can get what I really want. ENJOY!

We appreciate you too @DopeyBadger !
I have my setbacks now and again, but the fact that I'm now doing 6+ mile mid-week training runs (what?) and liking them (double-what?) and I'm even thinking about attempting more distance is almost 100% due to your help "righting my ship" as far as how I was training and racing. So when one day I do a half or a marathon, I'm totally blaming you...but in a good way :)

Who knows if the "stars align" maybe I can make an appearance at either of these "firsts". No guarantees as I'm not an astronaut and all, so I can't control the alignment of the stars (right, thats what astronauts do...). :-)

WOOOHOOO!

QOTD: How has your running or racing been influenced by anything you have read on this forum?

It is not an exaggeration to say that the vast majority I know about running and racing has come from the great folks on this forum. I have come to running relatively late in life and I only have one runner in my local circle of friends. That runner is my PT and has been dealing with a major knee injury for the last 2+ years and I don't feel right talking extensively about running with him as I know how it feels to lose an activity you love to a major injury.

As a result, you guys have been my source for inspiration, advice and support. I'd call out some individuals who have been especially helpful or inspirational but that would be a disservice to everyone else as no list I could give would ever be complete. Instead, I will just give a heartfelt "Thank You!" to everyone on here and say I hope to meet more and more of you in person at events.

Well said! Can I say that quite often I "cringe" around other runners (and triathletes) in real life because they are so self-absorbed...everyone here genuinely seems to care about each other which is incredibly refreshing!

You just made @FFigawi and @Ariel484's day...NAMASTE :)

Tri Tri Tri! I need another convert! :boat: :moped: :tiptoe:

First of all, that cartoon was so funny. My ex co-worker, who was the biggest fraud, used to do that stuff. People would talk about unrelated stuff and she would turn it into a conversation about her running, as if she was actually doing some. It became a running joke behind her back. So this made me think of her right away.

Mike, once I BQ I may move on to a triathlon. I don't know that I would ever attempt a full IM like you, and I won't be on any podiums, but I may try it. This whole running thing was started when I needed to get out of my comfort zone. If I ever BQ (I can't imagine that will feel comfortable at the time) it will be on to my next scary thing, which is swimming. I can swim, just not for a mile or 2, yet.

I came to this thread at a pretty low point confidence-wise (in life as well as running) and this thread has really helped bring me out of the hole that I had dug myself into. Just reading the inspiring stories from our amazing posters help to motivate me to keep getting out there and to finally run a goal race that I can be proud of come January. I enjoy the accountability of having races on the official schedule here, so to speak, and knowing that I'll be expected to report back. The knowledge I've gained here has been immeasurable and I've started to dream bigger...the marathon is in my official plans for 2018.

I can't fully answer this question without giving huge credit and appreciation to @Waiting2goback . He's been my rock for the last couple of months and I couldn't have found a better friend. He's kind, caring, patient even when I don't deserve it, gets after me when I need a boot in the butt, and puts up with my nonsense, which can be substantial. And he's doing all of this for me when he's going through recovery after surgery and major life changes. So, thank you Scott!!!

It is my pleasure but my thank you will come when I see your face after finishing your first marathon in 2018.

You all have pushed me to better understand the science even more than I thought I did. I joined this board in October 2015 with the hopes of helping others with my new found knowledge. But you all have continued to press for new answers and new ways to evaluate questions and it has provided me the opportunity to continue to try and learn everything about running that I can.

It's also offered me the ability to learn about others. I knew about run/walk, but because of my even greater knowledge of science and running I have an even greater appreciation for those that do it. And an even greater appreciation for those that put the same effort into their race but do it for twice as long as I do. It's pushed me to continue to push the envelope for myself and to test my own limits. You guys continue to inspire me.

It's also enabled me to help combine my two passions running and mentoring. In my profession, I mentor future researchers (college students) by providing them the opportunity to do simple projects we have here in the lab. It's one of the most fulfilling things I do. Others in the lab don't want to be bothered with teaching the younger generation, but I see it as the opposite and something that is a necessity. It brings me tremendous joy to see the light bulb turn on for them and for them to reach their goals. I've done over 5x more projects with students then the rest of the lab combined. This board offers me that same opportunity except through running. I've gained an extensive knowledge base through all of my reading and helping others understand what I've learned and learning from you all has been truly rewarding. In all honesty, when each of you meet your goals (or have the light bulb turn on) it brings me as much pleasure as it does for me to meet my own goals. I know how hard we all work to fit this hobby into our lives and to reach those arbitrary goals we set for ourselves means so much. And then to have other people trust me with months of their lives of training, which may or may not go well, has been truly heart warming and fulfilling. You all don't know me and most of us have never met in person, but you trust me enough to listen to some of my advice and that means a lot. So thanks to each and everyone one of you! at everyone! (<--- Hope that doesn't actually do anything!)

Edited: LOL! Even though the profile doesn't appear, apparently there is an "everyone" from October 2001 with no posts...

I think other people trust you with their training because it is rather obvious you love doing it. I can't speak for everyone but your name was mentioned several times today, and in the past, so obviously something shows through the screen to everyone.

One other thing this thread has shown me is just how little I know about running. On top of that, having all this time to sit around and think, because when you are training, working, taking care of the kids, etc... you don't always get to think, I have learned that I just haven't been as focused as I need to be to achieve my number 1 goal. BQ!!!! I see many of you guys running an equivalent amount of hours to a second FT job and I had to question how serious I was. I thank you all for indirectly calling me out!

Well I finally have a race in the near future that I just registered for tonight.

10/16 - Gulf Coast Half Marathon (Mandeville, LA) (1:35:00 / N/A)

Last year we got lucky and had cool weather for race day and I managed a PR of 1:39:28. I hope to better it this year and use the result as a gauge of fitness for the remainder of my marathon training cycle.

Now that looks FANCY! And oooh look, pricey too. That must mean it's right up my alley! lol

I figured people would think that it's pricey but I spent about that much on my two foam rollers and this thing works way better, I actually use it so that alone makes it a better value, and it will travel better to a race so I can bring it with me to Disney whereas my foam rollers need their own suitcase so I leave them home. And the swears that come out of my mouth when it works the knots out of my calves, it isn't pretty.

If you order it make sure you order it from a US website. I read about people having nightmare stories when they got them from another country. Just a tip.

In case anyone even remembers, I interviewed for a new job/promotion back on the 30th of August.
Well, I GOT THE JOB!!:banana::banana:
What a great way to start my vacation tomorrow!! :)

Congrats on the new job and promotion. Hopefully you made sure to negotiate some Disney time!

I don't bother reading any other running forums, what's the point? I get all the inspiration and advice I can handle here :) This is an amazing group of talented, dedicated runners and y'all continue to inspire me on a daily basis.

Well said @CheapRunnerMike . Just remember that you are also a big inspiration to the rest of us too.

ATTQOTD: If I could just combine what everybody has already said about this forum...that would be a good start.
Informative, Inspirational, Funny, Creative, Motivational......I've learned so much over the past 9 months about running and how to improve but the best part is learning about you guys and sharing your triumphs and setbacks together.

ATTQOTD: This thread and the people here have inspired me to keep going. From the various race recaps and reading about all the neat places and races to products, etc. each day on the thread has been so interesting and rewarding. Everyone has been nice and understanding and all of the links and insight has been so helpful! You have made me accountable to myself. Thank you for that!

Does anyone happen to know if the Wine & Dine Half-Marathon is always scheduled for the first weekend in November? Trying to make some room only reservations 499 days out, which is long before the date of the race weekend is officially announced.

Thanks!

I originally posted I thought so here, but I don't know now and I can't delete it. :)

It seems to be that now, but in the past it's been all over the place:

2010 - 10/3
2011 - 10/1
2012 - 11/10
2013 - 11/9
2014 - 11/9
2015 - 11/7

Slight frustration, I asked DH if he had a goal for our 5k next week and he said 27 min, I said 35. He would like to run together, but is slightly annoyed I want to do run walk intervals....

I feel like then run yourself and we can meet at the end, let me run how I want to.

In his defense up until I trained for DL 5k I would try to do some type of exercise and always give up, so I think he is trying to motivate me, but I trained and ran the DL 5k just fine....

My personal opinion as a wife who likes to be in the 28-31 range and a hubby who used to be in the 35-38 range for a 5k...this is what we would do. Choose "race" races and choose "together" races. On "race" races we just lone-wolf it. We spend time in the corrals together and we start off together and then we go our seperate ways. The first person to finish stays and cheers for the second person (if possible.)
For together races we don't even turn our garmins on or we don't care and we just run together. Sometimes he would "let me go run fast" for the third mile or last .25 miles or whatever.
Now he is catching up to me and soon this whole issue will be reversed and I'll be the slower one. He's just super tall and recovered from his knee surgery and it's only a matter of time.
SAVE YOUR MARRIAGE>>>RUN SEPARATE IF ONE PERSON CARES ABOUT TIME!
Run together if you just want to have fun and treat it like a "date."

I wanted to add one more thing...crossing the finish line in ANY time means you did not quit or give up. Just remind him of that ;)

Oh no, time to get new spreadsheets going. I'm going to need you to calculate all new race strategies keeping in mind the gravitational pull and oxygen levels, etc for my Moon Marathon. Sorry to do this to you on such short notice :)

(note: this is not a challenge, you don't actually have to do that...anyone want to takes bets if he actually goes and does this?)

I totally agree with @roxymama - run separate if someone cares about time. Run together if it's more of a fun date thing! My husband isn't into running like I am, so the few 5ks he's done, it's been for fun and we run together. Of course, he tries to smoke me at the very end, which always gets my hackles up when I could have finished way earlier! :P I just don't have the kick he does.

Thank you! Now it's getting him on the same page..... He wants me to run faster.... Ugh

Thank you! Now it's getting him on the same page..... He wants me to run faster.... Ugh

Tell him you want him to run faster and see how he likes it (sorry, I'm feeling zesty today)
But on a serious note: my first 5k was 42 minutes. I got down to where I am now gradually. And I don't always run my fastest every time. And my fastest will never win me any race so I try to keep all my goals very personal to me. It's great that he is encouraging you, but remind him that gradual change may be safest to prevent injury but also will keep you the most motivated to keep going. You don't want to feel like you've failed on a day where you should be celebrating what you are doing. Let's say you surprise yourself and finish in like 33 or 34...you want to feel happy about that. Hope that helps a little.
