The Running Thread - 2016

My PT believes that a week core and back is what caused my hip injuries, so yes, I believe a strong core is worth a lot.

I think "weak core" is the stock PT answer to everything. I'd be willing to bet you could get a foot lopped off by a lawnmower and they'll tell you it happened because of a "weak core". That being said, I'm not yet willing to test the hypothesis! :crutches:

I believe it though. I do have a weak core, and bad posture, and I tilted my hips when I walked. It's getting better, but it's a process.

I'm from Minnesota, but have never run there. I can't even say I knew the place existed despite having lived about 5 miles from there at one point. You're not terribly far from Minnehaha Park which has some decent trails and paths along the Mississippi River, but it is a bit far without a car.

It looks like Minnehaha will be a bit too far, so I guess I'll try out the wildlife refuge. I'm impressed someone was from near the right area - MN is a big state (compared to my tiny home state of CT).

We'll also be going to the Rennaissance Festival while we're there, so I'll get some extra walking in along with my runs.

Ran 7 miles with my wife this morning. Really great to watch her improve week after week.

Roll Tide!!!

Awesome! I love running with my husband if we ever have a chance. Mostly because we're both super competitive with each other and he has nothing on me on long runs :P

Also BEAT SC! Interested to see what Kiffin draws up against the team that fired him on the tarmac.

Got behind in 15 pages in reading. Lost my father last week and, no matter how old I am, I feel a little like a sad orphan. He was't a runner but was 89 1/2 and lived independently until the middle of June when he started having health problems. Hope those good genes keep me running for a little while longer. My running schedule has actually kept me sane, and I only missed 2 scheduled runs during the very hard month!

August mileage:
108 mi
19.41 hrs
Pace: about 10:48/mi - slow but consistent finishes the race!

Started with a pace group once. Felt like I was in a constant bottleneck with people all over me. Ran ahead a little to get breathing room and finished a minute or two ahead of them.

The bad news: I didn't get up at my alarm time this morning and stayed in bed longer.

The good news: I did still get out for my planned 4 miles, just a couple hours later. For some reason though it was really tough, and from the very first step I struggled. But somehow I still ended with approximately the same pace I normally do - I did not feel like it. :confused3

So last weekend I went and got fitted for new (stability) shoes as part of my ITB recovery. Decided to give them a whirl during the week. The lack of cushioning is going to take some getting used to, but I was able to do about 4kms pain free in them, which was great. I had a little discomfort in the final kilometer of my 5km run, so had a few walk breaks - so it was a slow 5km. Back to the physio is 2 weeks, and have a race that same weekend (it has a nice long cut off time, so I can walk if I do start to feel any pain). Going to need to make a call after that about whether I do just wine and dine and scrap Avengers, or do both.

Has anyone that has had IT Band troubles had any success with using intervals as a way to keep your conditioning but not aggravating the injury further? I find if I stop and walk for a bit then there is less chance of pain when I started running again, but there seems to be limit on the running I can do in one hit at the moment.

I used run :30 or 1:00/walk :30 intervals last fall for 1.5 months to finish my Dopey training after developing Piriformis syndrome (glute muscle). It did help keep my conditioning up even though my mileage was cut back. If intervals help than I would definitely do them! Walking uses different muscles too so then by starting them now if you have to do them in your races you'll be built up for them and good to go. Just make sure you gradually go from the run to walk and walk to run to not mess anything else up, use the shuffle as Galloway calls it I think.

Have you tried doing regular stretching and strengthening exercises for your ITB? When I had ITB problems, I found strengthening my glutes, aligning my hips properly, and keeping the ITB stretched on a daily basis helped resolve things quickly and keep any problems from recurring.

Anyone ever done the 21 fix day diet and work out plan? My husband and I are a week into it. I am doing the food part and not the workouts because I am already running at least four times a week. If you have done it, do you feel like you started to get more of your energy back in the second week? Just curious to hear anyone's thoughts if they have done it.

Yes, but I actually did quite a bit of PT before I started run/walking again. Very short intervals, with more walking than running. If the pain increased, I stopped running.

Registered yesterday for a 5k held in the town we have our permanent campground site at. I had seen the sign on one of my runs the weekend before, but forgot to register online. Turned out to work out well as asked my husband if he wanted to run it too (he's been running with our dog here and there, so he was up for it) and he said sure. The course for the half was beautiful (5k was nice too). For any of you in WI, the Green Lake Half Marathon might be one for your list. It is pretty hilly, but runs by a golf course and the lake. That's my goal for next year to run the Green Lake half marathon next Labor Day weekend.

Finished the 5k in 31:55. Husband finished 30:43. I was gearing towards negative splits, but went out a little fast. Slowed down too much for the second mile, but started picking things up again for the third mile. The guy that one it was booking, he finished in 15:44. He was in the 30-39 division. The second place guy was 17:28. More than a 2 min lead!

I've incorporated 21-day fix and P90X3 into my cross training and found it has been a tremendous help. Haven't done the diet as the amounts didn't seem like enough to for me to sustain energy levels. But other non-runners have used it and found great success. Probably doesn't really help answer your question though.
