The Running Thread - 2016

Thanks! I also needed to use the restroom right before the start and luckily found a couple of port-a-potties across the road at the marina (I will remember that for next year!). I felt pretty good for most of the race but my legs started to feel like jello around mile 5. My goal was just to finish and I managed to do that and keep a pretty consistent pace throughout. My time was just under 1hr 10min, which I was pleased with for my first 10k. I was a bit horrified at the start when they announced that their database was messed up and our times might not be recorded correctly (I mean, I was primarily doing this race for POT for the Star Wars Lightside Half Marathon in January!), but thankfully my time seems to have been recorded just fine. Anyway, I am super happy to have finished my first 10k and I am really grateful to all the advice I have read on this thread … I am not sure I would have made it this far without it! Thank you all for the great discussions here :)
Great job!

I got the impression from what the announcer was saying was that the database screwup was if you had an incorrect name printed on your bib. Like they knew some people had the wrong names/numbers and those needed to be fixed. Mine came out ok, too! Slow, but ok! :) I was shooting for 1:15, I knew I am not in good enough shape and it was too hot to PR, but I was not ready for the setting sun and heat on that first 3 miles and only managed a 1:17:05. Last year the race was super cloudy/foggy and humid but there was no sun, so even though the humidity was oppressive, it didn't feel so bad.

If you saw a guy with a cute reddish brown doggo at the corner to the final stretch to the finish line, that was my puppy! :D And my husband but he is not memorable. ;) It was pretty funny, I ran by them (I wasn't expecting him to be there, I thought he was going to be closer up near to the finish area, but I guess the speakers were too loud), and then Penny (my puppy) dragged him down the road behind me trying to catch up.

I think that a picture of cute reddish brown dog named Penny should be provided!
Everyone should share their dog pics.

Ooops... I guess I can tell at what point the battery on my HRM died. Since I'm typing this, I'm pretty confident it was the HRM and not me that died. :D

I had some complete technology fails last night. I forgot to charge my headphones, too, and those died around the 1 mile marker.

This was her at the pre-race dinner for my half marathon back in June, Covered Bridges in Vermont. :) I haven't made her my running buddy yet. I might try it some this fall. She just turned 1 at the end of June, so she's still a little too young to go running, plus the heat. She's also kind of a spaz when she starts running, so I think it might be a trial to teach her how to do run/walk intervals. :)

Hey @LSUlakes .......Hopefully the water issues have improved and it is no longer a threat.

I totally forgot to have you add the races I 've been signed up for since March......

Doing the 8k/Marathon Challenge!!!
Saturday, November 12th --- Outer Banks 8k (using as an easy run warmup for marathon...no goal)
Sunday, November 13th -------Outer Banks Marathon (sooooooooo reluctant to provide an actual goal but let's go with 4:10)

Good luck to everyone this weekend with races, or flood waters, or heat advisories, or injuries.
Such a great course until the sand dunes at the 13 mile mark (I only did the half in April, ending at the Y). Good luck, and best wishes for a tail wind, especially crossing to Manteo!

Good luck this weekend everyone!

I have 2.5 quick questions.

First, does anyone carry a hydration pack or running belt with some sort of fuel on it? If so what brand do you recommend? I'm currently looking into them for my long runs because I hate running back home to refuel even if I can't really be trusted with a consistent source of water.

My second question is, for those of you who have multiple pairs of shoes waiting to be added to the rotation how to select which ones you plan to use next?
Last summer I bought a 2 Liter Nathan Moxy Hydration pack
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00MN88UUY/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I've really enjoyed it! It's very comfortable, easy to drink from, and the colors make me happy :) There are little pockets on the straps that I put my beans in that are easily accessible. I hope you find one that works well for you!

About a year ago, I got tired of creating routes that would allow me to stop home to grab a drink. I then purchased a Nathan handheld. Worked great, but I got tired of having something in my hands. A few months ago I bought the Nathan running belt (hopefully the picture is attached). I've had quite a few successful long runs with it (no bounce, no chafing, pouch holds chews & car keys, and I usually freeze the water bottles so it's nice & cold when I'm ready for a drink).

This may seem small to all the treadmill warriors out there but I just got home from running 6 miles at the gym on the treadmill. I've never gone past 5 miles on a machine cause I have a mental block with distance on the machine and have been running outside in all kinds of crazy conditions to avoid it. But tonight at 7 when given the chance to go for a run I wanted to stay home and finish my tea party with my daughter. So gym at 9pm it was. And I discovered it actually shuts you off at the hour mark, so I just started it back up for the final minutes.

Just realized this is not my journal, but the running thread. Eh, I'll leave it here...gotta be others that can understand my lil victory. Gonna run outside for my long run this weekend because I'm still me.
(And it was a tempo run....stupid dumb hard tempo runs! :)

It's not small to me! I think the most I've run on the treadmill is 4 miles, and it was no fun. That may have to end this Christmas though. We'll see what the weather's like.

I have been on a "hydration quest" over the last year or so. Here's what I've tried and found out along the way:

Hand-helds: No thanks. Don't like running with anything in my hand

Hydration belts: I've tried the Nathan Trek (22oz bottle) and Trail Mix (2xsmall bottles. The Trek was good for walking, but a bit bouncy for running. The Trail Mix is pretty good, but I have problems with the bottles wanting to rotate around my waist as I run. Also, I had to add an extra pouch to it to hold my phone. Not an ideal solution.

CamelBak Marathoner: Very comfortable and easy to run in. No problems with sloshing or bouncing. Great running solution hampered by being a PITA to clean. If it was as easy to clean as a bottle, I'd've stopped here.

Orange Mud HydraQuiver (Single Barrel): This is what I currently use. Very comfortable to wear and the bottle is surprisingly easy to access. Generous storage for phone and nutrition. Downsides are the sloshing of the water can be distracting until you get used to it and tune it out and the price.

Good luck finding something that works well for you!

I'm with you! I don't want to carry anything in my hand, and I hate every hydration belt I've tried. I have a bottle for my Flipbelt, and a Camelbak to try, but I haven't really road tested them yet.

I have tried many hydration belts and my absolute favorite is a 2-bottle one from Fitletic. It is an adjustable belt and it stays put. It also has a decent sized pouch that fits quite a bit (clif bar, shot bloks, phone). On really long runs I have to refill the bottles, but that's not an issue for me as there are parks on my route I can refill at. I've tried 4-bottle belts, but I find that having the bottles on my rear end caused bouncing. :p

I'm glad you like it. I know a lot of people do! I can't stand the Fitletic belt. I tried 2 different ones, adjusted it every which way, wore it on different places, turned it backwards, and even talked to the owner of the company. It still moves!

I bought a handheld water bottle thing that comes with a pocket for fuel a few months ago, but haven't used it yet. Now I see it has mixed reviews. Waah!

I use a similar version to this one, but the bottle is insulated so it doesn't freeze my hand. lol. It can leak if you don't put the cap on right. It LITERALLY takes me like 3 or 4 tries to get the cap on straight, then it doesn't leak. Then I love it. I only use it for shorter runs/races though.

I have seen those a few times on people at races and wondered about them. I wish the shoulder straps were smaller. It's comfortable?

Yes, the two bottle fitletic is my go-go for half marathons. I like to wear it on my hips though, so I do have to adjust it sometimes, but it's the best I've found. I do hate that it blocks my zipper pocket on my sparkle skirt, but I guess there are worse things. I LOVE the bib tabs that are integrated on it now though. No more pins!

Since there hasn't been a QOTD for a few days and the thread is kind of quiet, anyone mind if I post one? I have one in mind that I'm sure has already been asked at some point, but it's something I'm thinking about personally today and thought I'd bring it up here. Anyway, here it is, it's got 2 parts:

QOTD: What races/goals are you currently training for, and what are your long term goals/plans for your running?

My ATTQOTD: The current big event on my calendar that I am preparing for and that has all my focus is Lumiere's Challenge in November. It's a good progressive step for me since I've done a few 10Ks now and I completed my first half marathon back in June. After Lumiere, my next goal will probably be time improvement, and planning for a spring half marathon in 2017. I figure that will keep the motivation going throughout the winter.

As for my long term goal, it is to complete a full marathon, specifically the Disney World Marathon since everyone raves about it and says it is the best course at Disney and great for a first full marathon. After my half in June, my immediate thought was "I can not imagine ever doing a full marathon and doing twice this distance!" But the last couple days I've really started thinking about it more, and I've gotten to the point where the idea is becoming more appealing. I figure, I'm still young, and if I have the capability, I want to go for it. I'm not sure how soon it will happen, but depending on how Lumiere goes, I may set my sights on 2018 in Disney, since it will be the 25th anniversary of the Marathon. What better setting for a first marathon! The more I think about it, yes, it's terrifying, but it also makes me really excited!

QOTD: What races/goals are you currently training for, and what are your long term goals/plans for your running?

I'm still working my way back from injury and illness, so my big event is the 5K/10K combo at PHM weekend next year. Then beyond that, I'm hoping to do the Glass Slipper 2018. I have yet to do a half without some sort of complication, so we'll see.

QOTD: What races/goals are you currently training for, and what are your long term goals/plans for your running?

Currently training for Lakefront Marathon on October 2nd in Milwaukee. I'm training for a 3:18, but weather conditions will dictate the actual goal on race day. As of right now, I could realistically finish anywhere between 3:10-3:30 given conditions.

Long term goal is to give my first attempt at a Boston Qualifying time and sub 3 hour marathon in Fall 2017. I haven't solidified my Dopey 2017 or Dopey 2018 goals yet, but they'll be based off the Fall marathon times of those prior seasons.

Long long term goals:
-Run sub 3 hr marathon
-Win a local 5K
-Win a local 10K
-Run sub 1:30 HM
-Run 335 miles in one month (same mileage as my first year running)
-Complete a back to back marathon challenge
-Finish top 50 in Dopey
-Finish top 25 in Dopey
-Finish top 10 in Dopey
-Win Dopey Challenge
-Complete 7 marathons in 7 days on 7 continents (*Contingent on Win Lottery)
-Open futuristic running/training/scientific discovery center (*Contingent on Win Lottery)
-Coach others to their running goals

As for my long term goal, it is to complete a full marathon, specifically the Disney World Marathon since everyone raves about it and says it is the best course at Disney and great for a first full marathon. Disney marathon is a great choice for a first marathon!

Thanks....I've done the Flying Pirate Half two times and the last half mile is quite a challenge. Hoping the full course bypasses that trek through the woods and keeps on the gravel road on the way to Manteo.

Disney is a great place to run a full marathon. It's pretty flat, lots of photo ops, diversions, and fun. Terrifying for you now but realistic before you know it.

ATTQOTD: Currently training for Outer Banks Marathon in November and hoping to finish in the 4:08-4:15 range. That would be a significant improvement over my previous times but I'm confident my training will get me there. If all goes well in November, hope to go sub 4:00 in 2017 and take it from there. Also want another crack at Dopey in 2018. Looking forward to a good crowd from this forum to be there.

QOTD: What races/goals are you currently training for, and what are your long term goals/plans for your running?

Right now, I'm training for Ironman Florida in November. I'm doing more biking than anything else, but still enough running to keep me happy.

Long term running goals:
- Rocky Raccoon 100
- Finish the Seven Continents Club
- Qualify for Boston
- Earn a green number at Comrades
