The Running Thread - 2016

Hey @LSUlakes .......Hopefully the water issues have improved and it is no longer a threat.

I totally forgot to have you add the races I 've been signed up for since March......

Doing the 8k/Marathon Challenge!!!
Saturday, November 12th --- Outer Banks 8k (using as an easy run warmup for marathon...no goal)
Sunday, November 13th -------Outer Banks Marathon (sooooooooo reluctant to provide an actual goal but let's go with 4:10)

Good luck to everyone this weekend with races, or flood waters, or heat advisories, or injuries.

I came really close to making the Outer Banks Marathon my goal race this fall! The course looked great and I love the NC coast line. In the end, though, being able to roll out of bed and drive 20 minutes to the City of Oaks start won out over the travel and hotel costs, especially with all the Disney running expenses this year. I look forward to hearing how you enjoy it.

It's now been two weeks since I went to the physio for my IT Band issues (both legs). I've spent the last week doing everything the physio and Dr google have suggested. I really feel like i am making progress. Yesterday I was able to go out and test it. For the last 6 weeks I haven't been able to run more than 200 meters without sharp pains in both knees. Yesterday I did a (sloooow) 5k. No pain at all in my right knee, and pain in my left knee only when I tried to up the pace (at which point I would pull back). Took me 35 mins, but I was so happy to just be able to run. I was a bit worried that today I would find I had trouble walking up and down stairs, but no pain today at all. Plan is to do another week of physio and stretching and vitamin c taking and then test it again next weekend.

This is awesome! Just be aggressive with those exercises and stay at it! As you're able to run more, you will need to keep working to strengthen your hips to keep it from coming back. I'm free of ITBS at the moment, but I know I have a weakness there and still work at it at least once a week, sometimes more.

I am looking forward to the event and will gladly post a brief race recap and event details. Good luck with your City of Oaks event.

ATTQOTD: Main goal race I have started train for is the Chevron Houston Marathon. Based on how close I get to a BQ will determine if I train hard for marathons going forward. The races I have scheduled for this fall will all be used for training runs.

Long term is to use running to keep fit, and try to keep lowering my PR for the half and the 10 mile distance, and based on Houston, if I continue to chase the BQ

For the prior question on options for hydration, I use an amphipod runner's belt. It has two clip-on small water bottles that are easily accessible and simple to reattach to the belt. There is a pouch that will hold phone, keys, and money, plus slots for goo.

ATTQOTD: I finished my first 5K yesterday (Zombie Run at Golden Gate Bridge) and am amazed that I was able to run the majority of the course (less the staircase to the bridge that I had to walk). I now feel that I am capable of running at Tinkerbell 2017. Since I am not really enamored of running, I would like to switch to muscle building in the short term using the 21 Day Fix program. I will switch back to a running program prior to the next race.

Ran 13.1 this morning, then came home to watch the end of the Olympic marathon. Now, I was running at an easy pace, but it is still a little disheartening to see these guys finish a full in less time that I finished my half today. :worried:

Meb slipped right at the finish line and the spectators gasped (worried that he might have injured himself, I think). He was amazing. He smiled, knocked out a few pushups, then rose and crossed the finish line. :worship:

I was just going to post the same thing! Their full marathon is faster than my half marathon time. :faint:

Meb is incredible. It's crazy that he stopped a few times for issues but still finished in 33rd. His slip at the finish startled me too, but glad he's okay and good for him for doing the push-ups and getting right back up. How special too that his daughters got to be there to see him. :)

I have been thinking about the recommendation to always run a race with things to which you are accustomed: shoes, clothes, breakfast, etc. I have a standard pre-run breakfast. Since I will be staying in a hotel and don't have a kitchen, what portable meals do people recommend? I would have time to train myself to a new normal.

Bagel & peanut butter? Oatmeal? Clif bar? Cereal & banana?

I did bagel & peanut butter for my race at DL, although I could have done oatmeal there, too, because there was a coffee pot in the room. For WDW, I made oatmeal and had a banana at the food court since it was W&D, but I could have done either one of those there as well. Just grabbed the bagel ahead of time during the day.

Just checked in to see how @CheapRunnerMike is doing on Ironman Mont-Tremblant. He rocked the swim and bike and is currently on the run. Here are his splits so far:

Swim: 1:05:44 (1:43 per 100m)
Bike: 5:31:04 (20.27 mph)
Run: split at 4km is 20:05 (8:04 pace per mile)

Go Mike!!!

Go, @CheapRunnerMike Go!!!!!!!!

Just wanted to say if you haven't seen yet that I created an FAQ thread for RunDisney events. It's not completely finished but I would love feedback on what you guys think about it and things I should change or add. I put the links to all of the race specific threads in there as well.

Update: after 15.8 miles, @CheapRunnerMike is averaging an 8:34 pace overall on the marathon.

The weather here is AMAZING today. A cold front went through yesterday afternoon, so temperatures right now are around 70 with very low humidity. I went out to the park and got in 4.5 miles. :) I would have done more, but the loop around the pond was getting a bit boring. I really wish I could find a better non-repetitive route nearby for longer runs.
