The Running Thread - 2016

I stopped running in June because of school vacation. I'm starting back up next week to train for Dark Side. I found a Barre class that works with my schedule and they do a lot of ankle strengthening exercises, which I need. And now they are cancelling it because the instructor is pregnant and they have no one to replace her. OMG!

On another note, does anyone own a theracane? Do you love it?

ATTQOTD: Short term I'm training to complete 2 halfs in the fall and the Disney marathon in January. Long-term my goals are on becoming more athletic and competitive in races (at least for my age group), with the pie-in-the sky goal being an 8 minute/mile race pace, first for 5K, then for 10K, then for half, then (ideally at some point) for full.

Right now, I'm training for Ironman Florida in November. I'm doing more biking than anything else, but still enough running to keep me happy.

Long term running goals:
- Rocky Raccoon 100
- Finish the Seven Continents Club
- Qualify for Boston
- Earn a green number at Comrades
You have the Medoc Marathon coming up, according to this thread's race list - I'm very jealous. Your goal of finishing is ambitious - I'd make it to about the 3rd "hydration" station before losing all ambition to continue. If you don't mind me asking, what's your planned costume? The videos are pretty hysterical!

Oh, damn, I need to get that changed. We had to pull out of the race when one of our group got invited to a wedding the same weekend. Our costumes were going to be based on Mayan legends because they lend themselves to fun & colorful attire.

I have seen those a few times on people at races and wondered about them. I wish the shoulder straps were smaller. It's comfortable?

I find it to be very comfortable. After a couple of runs getting used to it, I don't even notice it's there. It's a lot more comfortable than a tight belt around my waist. In the interest of full disclosure, I only run in shirts with sleeves, so I can't attest to the comfort with tanks/singlets.

QOTD: What races/goals are you currently training for, and what are your long term goals/plans for your running?

In the short to mid term, I have the Dumbo Double Dare coming up in a couple of weeks to complete my Coast to Coast Challenge. I'm treating that as less of a race than as extended training runs for my current race goal. I want to see how I can handle a marathon when trained and (hopefully) healthy, so all my running is geared towards preparing for the City of Oaks Marathon in November. After that, it will be a matter of bridging that fitness to Dopey in January.

Longer term, a lot will depend on whether I get into the London Marathon through the lottery. If I do, I'll be focused on that through the early part of next year. If not, I plan to drop back and focus on half marathons. The training load for fulls is just too much for me to sustain with the other hobbies I enjoy. Halfs will keep me challenged and fit without being all consuming.

Since there hasn't been a QOTD for a few days and the thread is kind of quiet, anyone mind if I post one? I have one in mind that I'm sure has already been asked at some point, but it's something I'm thinking about personally today and thought I'd bring it up here. Anyway, here it is, it's got 2 parts:

QOTD: What races/goals are you currently training for, and what are your long term goals/plans for your running?

Just this week I deferred my October race, which was to be my first full marathon. Hamstring injury just kept me out too long. I am just starting to run again, and I'm waiting to see how quickly my fitness returns before I make any definite plans. Hoping to do my normal Thanksgiving 10k, and a half in December. If those go well, I'm looking at a coastal Maine full marathon in the spring for my first. I will do the deferred one next October.

Long term, the goal is Dopey, and like everyone else in the universe, 2018 would make sense if I hit all my other targets. Registration should be fun:) One caveat -- I have a pretty unpredictable family life with lots of "emergencies" with my in laws and parents. It's going to be a hard choice to register for Dopey if there is no deferral option. One hope would be if they introduced a race insurance option.

I am currently training for the Haunted Half in October. My goal every half is just to follow the training schedule to a T. And to avoid injury of course!

Long term, I'm trying to decided between 2017 Dumbo Challenge (which would be my first challenge) or 2018 WDW Marathon (or perhaps Goofy Challenge). My kids really want to go to Disneyland more than Disney World this time, so it will probably be Dumbo and I will wait another year for my first marathon.

My really short term goal is to figure out how to get my 5 miles in today! I waaaay overslept which was nice bc DH and I went to bed after midnight, but now it's hot. I may do a treadmill/outside combo today :)

I am currently training for my fall HMs (10/23 and 11/13). Now that my 10K from Thursday is done, I have a 5M and 2 5K along the way before the HMs. I am hoping to PR in one of these HMs (< 2:45). I don't have any plans longer term than that. :)

QOTD: What races/goals are you currently training for, and what are your long term goals/plans for your running?

Add me to the training for Dumbo in two weeks! This will be my first challenge, so we shall see how it goes. I'm slowly regaining my fitness/speed from taking a month off, but I wish I had another week or two. Oh well.

Long term, is for me to just continue to improve. Whether that's pace, distance, less intervals ... Well, I want all of those things, so I have a lot to work towards. Running is overall fitness for me, so as long as I'm improving I think I can stick with it.

I find it to be very comfortable. After a couple of runs getting used to it, I don't even notice it's there. It's a lot more comfortable than a tight belt around my waist. In the interest of full disclosure, I only run in shirts with sleeves, so I can't attest to the comfort with tanks/singlets.

Thanks for the note about the shirt vs tank. I do tend to wear tanks. Maybe I can try to find one in person somewhere.

I did the unthinkable (for me) today!! I got up at 530 a.m. To go run!! WHAT!! Who am I?? I'm very proud if myself. Lol.

QOTD: What races/goals are you currently training for, and what are your long term goals/plans for your running?

Currently I'm training for the Naperville Half Marathon in October and then on to Star Wars Dark Side Challenge in April 2017.

Long term, I may try another marathon. I've done eight in the past, but it's been 12 years since my last one, and my last one wasn't good. It would be nice to have a better marathon and leave the last bad taste behind. If I do try another one, it may not surprise folks here that it will likely be the WDW Marathon (which I have never done before). I hear that 2018 may be a popular year for the WDW Marathon :-), so maybe I'll shoot for that one. Other than that, I would just like to improve my 5k, 10k and half marathon times.

Short term for me is Dumbo. This is my first year running anything longer than a 5k and I hadn't done many of those. This will be my first challenge.

Long term, I want to increase my speed. I am about 13.5 per mile on most days, would like to cut that down. Depending how I feel after Dumbo, I may give Dopey a shot in 2018. The LA marathon course looks pretty good too.

QOTD: What races/goals are you currently training for, and what are your long term goals/plans for your running?
Well my big event is Dopey for January.

My long term goals? I don't know. I enjoy running disney races and I hope to continue to do them. I will likely throw in a local race here of there but I don't know if I would ever go past a marathon distance and I have no interest in a tri.

Currently I'm training for my first half in October (the AthHalf) and for Princess in February (so excited!). I just started running again last fall/winter, so getting to a 10k was a huge goal and now I sometimes can't believe I've signed up for two half marathons so close together.

At the moment, I don't have huge long term goals. I'd like to make my everyday mileage a little higher so that I can run longer races and be better conditioned. In general I just want to learn more about running and improve my techniques and knowledge and build goals from there. I'm not totally sure I want to do a full any time soon, but if I keep enjoying running it will probably happen eventually :P

I had another post-40 PR this morning! Official time is 27:08 for the Mitchell's Run thru Rockford 5K and because this is a smaller race (about 750 people), I came in 6th in my age division! If it hadn't been so darn hot & humid, I might have gotten under 27:00 minutes...:crazy2:

I've been running this race for the past twelve years, ever since we moved to Rockford from Grand Rapids after starting a family. This race raises money for research for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy and is named after a local boy with the disease. His parents were runners and when their son was diagnosed, they wanted to do something to help others with the disease. Today was the 18th annual race and they announced that they have raised over a million dollars as of today. :thumbsup2

In other news, a cold front came through this afternoon and produced a couple of tornadoes in my area. The sirens were blaring and we spent over an hour in the basement waiting it out. Fortunately it tracked south and east of us. I think I've had enough excitement for today!

QOTD: What races/goals are you currently training for, and what are your long term goals/plans for your running?

currently training for the W&D 10K, this will be my second race with them, did the Tink in May. then I will roll that into training for the Star wars 1/2, which will be my first. Got a couple of long term goals, first and foremost is to run a Disney race with all of my children, the Star wars will be with child #3, so well on my way to finishing that, child #4 will have to wait awhile as she is preggo with my first grand child and the navy is moving them to Guam for 3 yrs. 2nd goal is to get a coast to coast medal, then work my way up to a challenge, then finally the castle to chateau medal.

It's now been two weeks since I went to the physio for my IT Band issues (both legs). I've spent the last week doing everything the physio and Dr google have suggested. I really feel like i am making progress. Yesterday I was able to go out and test it. For the last 6 weeks I haven't been able to run more than 200 meters without sharp pains in both knees. Yesterday I did a (sloooow) 5k. No pain at all in my right knee, and pain in my left knee only when I tried to up the pace (at which point I would pull back). Took me 35 mins, but I was so happy to just be able to run. I was a bit worried that today I would find I had trouble walking up and down stairs, but no pain today at all. Plan is to do another week of physio and stretching and vitamin c taking and then test it again next weekend.

I really want to be able to do Wine & Dine (which is why I am so dedicated to the physio). Last year was my first go at that race and I really want to be able to say I have done it. I know I have a good enough proof of time to give me a lot of space to walk if I need to. I am also registered for Avengers, but I think I either need to commit to walking Avengers, or scrap the idea altogether (so as not to do any long term damage if this doesn't start to really improve). I am going to give myself until my DL Hotel payment deadline in October to decide.
