Since I had the only race today, I will do my first race report ever! It was warm and humid, even on Table Rock Mountain. The 5k started 7 minutes after the 15k and had one water stop. The race starts on the road for about .7 miles according to the race director and the hits the trailhead. The short trail (Carrick Creek Trail) itself is 2 miles according to the website, then back on the road for the .7 mile return. Keels can check my math, but I believe that adds up to more than a 5k! My Map My Run app (yeah, I don't have a fancy Garmin) actually clocked in at 3.9. Anyway, the road part has several good hills, and they are much steeper on the way back (not really). I think all races should end with the last half mile being downhill, but I digress. The first mile of the trail is mostly uphill, with a couple of creek crossings and some steps made by roots, stones, or lumber brought in. Then you hit the water stop, and I mean STOP! I and several others near me stopped and drank before we moved on. No pinch the cup and run for us. The speedsters in the front probably did that, but my group was "intermediate" runners. The next 1/2 mile was up and down and the last 1/2 mile of trail was mostly downhill with lots of roots, stones, and downhill "steps" carved into the trail. I let my little pacer group get a little ahead because, as I wrote last October, I fell on a downhill of a trail and hit my head and knocked myself out. I was fine, but the ambulance and emergency room bills were not, so I try to be more careful! Anyway, before we got back to the road, I caught up and actually smoked them at the end. Very gratifying since they were half my age. Well, I finished in 50:44 according to my time. Only 44 seconds over my goal. I'm happy with that. Meanwhile, DH finished the 15k which REALLY climbs the mountain. Several finishers of the 15k said, "never again," and one passed out at the finish from overheating. Yeah, did I say it was warm?
ATTQOTD: I always sign up for races ahead of time!
