The Running Thread - 2016

QOTD: What is the latest you ever decided to go out for a run?

I'm not a late runner at all. I think maybe I did a later run on a hotel treadmill on Christmas vacation a couple of years ago, but that's probably it.

Speaking of soft drink, I have noticed people have a lot of different names for them. We have always just called any type of soft drink a coke. As in, what kind of coke do you want to drink? It is my observation, that southerners are very loyal coke drinkers as opposed to Pepsi.

I'm from Oklahoma. We usually say pop or Coke. I have lived in California most of my life and can still not call it soda.

Thanks to everyone for the positive thoughts. I ended up getting to talk to my boss late this afternoon, and he appreciated my honesty on what was taking place. He assured me that this was a valuable lesson learned and I do not to fear the loss of my job. In reality we could restock the pipe and fittings, but we would end up losing about half of the investment due to fees. The other option is to keep it in our laydown yard and wait for a job to come along and use it. I had a opportunity to try to place blame else where, but if I was doing work by the book, this would not have happened. I learned that just because I am told to hurry up and put in the order, the extra time required to CMA is much less than doing it in a hurry. It was a very long day, and I am still at the office catching up on lost time on my newest project. I am going to go for a run soon, but I am tired and not sure if I will get in the total 6 miles tonight... Again, thanks again for listening to my personal problems and the kind words.

I'm glad you talked to your boss hope you are feeling better about it. That's usually the best thing to do...Go ahead and bite the bullet and talk to them, because it's often not as bad as we think it's going to be.

That is great news! I am very happy for you.

QOTD: What is the latest you ever decided to go out for a run?

ATTQOTD: 11:29 PM last night for 4 miles. I was working late trying to get to bottom of a huge mistake I made about 8 weeks ago that has just surfaced. I was hoping it was an error else where, but unfortunately the majority of the blame is on me. I did not rest well last night and feel sick to my stomach. I am not sure what is going to happen or how long its going to take but I don't see things working out for me.

QOTD: I have run at 10 pm a few times. I had to do it to get used to it for running for the ToT in 2014 but then I did it a few times last summer. I just went out at 9pm tonight.

ATTQOTD: I am not a night time runner. I can't think of the last time I ran in the evening at home... the only time I can think of was the shakeout run I did at the POFQ/POR paths after I arrived for W&D last year.

Well, W&D was a night race so you did run late at least once. :rolleyes1

I've had these for over a year and really like them. They've been flawless and have no issues in rain.

I agree. I have had them for over a year and I have sweat heavily in them running in the summer. I have run in rain. I have never had an issue. I am completely pleased with these and would absolutely by another pair.

That's excellent news. Hopefully everything turns out ok and you get to recoup some of the lost money on other projects. I can't speak for everyone else but I have no problem with you venting about non running stuff.

Yeah, that's another regional thing that centered around Boston (eastern MA, southern NH/ME). My experience in Seacoast NH is the same, although my mom and dad (mid-60's) don't call it that, and neither do I (40), but my older relatives all did.

I wonder if it didn't come from back when stuff like Moxie was marketed as medicinal drinks. Speaking of another regional thing that all my older relatives drank... :)

We called it coke or soda growing up but my grandparents always called it tonic. I tried a Moxie when I was younger, probably like 10 years old, it was one of the most disgusting things I ever drank. I don't know why anyone would buy a second can/bottle.

love the feeling of living.png

I feel like this a lot when I run and had the feeling tonight. It was dark, the weather was perfect. I had thought about skipping it as my ankle was hurting and I don't want to risk making it worse. But I went out and the fresh air, and the smell of the camp fires (I live near a lake that has a campground on it). I was loving it. And my ankle didn't hurt at all on the run. Win, Win!

During that period I regularly ran after work, but only once made the mistake of running after dinner. My latest run during that period was probably at around 9 at night.
I ran a local no frills 10k last week hosted by our local athletic club (it cost $5 and was encouragement to get a run in) but due to the later start time (7pm) I had already eaten dinner. I didn't have problems with the run itself but it certainly slowed me down. One of the race organizers asked me if I ever ran a 10k. :sad2: Granted it was a much faster 10k than most local 10ks with most people running sub 10min/miles but I certainly will rethink eating dinner before running at their events again.

:D

My shakeout run at the resort was probably around 8pm. I thought the question was about training runs, though, so that's why I didn't count W&D itself. That surely was the latest run I have started, since it was the 2015 delayed race, so we didn't get started until like 11:30 by the time my corral started. :)

I have a couple of other local races that I do that are evening races. One starts at 6pm in mid-August, the other starts at 5pm in mid-September.

This week we have the following folks with races:

22 - LSUlakes - Summer Series Hump Day Run 2 Miler #2 (14:00 / N/A)
25 - @Baloo in MI - Thru the Woods Half Marathon (NG / N/A)
25 - @roxymama - Soldier Field 5k (NG / N/A)
26 - @CheapRunnerMike - Rose City Long Course Triathlon (3:20:00 / N/A)
26 - @Waiting2goback - B.A.A 10K - (NG / N/A)
26 - @flvy - B.A.A 10k – (NG / N/A)
26 - @SueInBoston - B.A.A 10K (NG / N/A)
26 - @Mimsy Borogove - Her Madison Half Marathon (NG / N/A)

Let me know if you would like to adjust your goal for your upcoming races this week. Best of luck to you all!

Tonight I am running the second race of the summer series 2 miler. I did not run the first one this year. Todays course is a double loop and very narrow course in a park in town. I did not run any of these races last year and my PR for these events is 13:46. Not sure if I will hit that mark or not today, but I am feeling good at the moment, just not sure about the speed.

QOTD: What is your preference for type of running shirt on your daily runs? How about for races?

ATTQOTD: My normal running shirt has sleeves and depending on the weather will determine race day attire. I normally go with a singlet for most races though.

@doctorintheTARDIS Yay! I'm glad I could help you find them :) They're fun virtual races with great online community and they're really transparent about their finances. I've been gone at a conference so haven't been following along for the past couple days but I'm going to try to catch up. I'm also going camping this weekend (leaving tomorrow) and won't be online at all so will miss you guys this weekend too. As far as late runs, I've done some night time races including Tower of Terror and Wine and Dine. But the latest I've done a training run is like 7pm or so when an old running group used to meet at the track.

Old QOTD: I LOVE night runs. If I didn't have to be up early I would always run at night. 11 pm is the best in my mom's neighborhood, the streetlights keep it well lit and it's about a mile loop. Never go too far from a drink of water, it's cooler, no sun beating down, and I feel like a secret agent. I live out in the country so I don't feel safe enough to do it here.

ATTQOTD: I've never done a race so I can't answer that. For daily runs, the less I feel them, the better. I like ones without sleeves. I would run in my undergarments if I felt comfortable enough doing it :p

I always wear a compression base to prevent chaffing and help moisture management and can wear virtually any shirt i want over that shirt depending on weather. Most runs I have my compression shirt and an old race shirt; I'm still pretty self-conscious and don't consider myself fit enough to go shirtless, in a singlet, or with the compression top only.

I usually wear tech shirts but will wear cotton if that's part of my costume. I wore a black tech shirt for my half but wore a cotton shirt that I made for the 5K.

As for the soda question we just call it soda in Wisconsin. We always think people are weird when they come up from Illinois and call it Pop.

With warmer weather I'll go with a singlet (mostly Lululemon, some Nike ones as well) or at the most sleeveless. Only exception is running trails, where I will often wear a short sleeve tech shirt, giving me just a tiny bit more protection from branches, etc. If it gets much warmer I will run topless as well #teamskins

ATTQOTD: It really depends on the weather. Tech shirts with long sleeves when it's cold (I usually get Athleta when there's an additional sale on their sale items). If it's a little warmer - short sleeve. But in general I like tank tops (singlets?) and only wear tank tops during races. They're tech fabric but super light - like wearing nothing at all. I found a style from new balance I love, but it was discontinued. I used to wear things pretty tight, but now I'm liking fitted but slightly loose.

Training is usually in a random, wicking T-shirt. It can be either a race shirt or one of my UA/Nike clearance rack finds. In colder weather, I'll add a long sleeve compression shirt underneath.

Race day attire depends on the race. For most local races, I've switched to InkNBurn shirts, as they are very comfortable and feel cooler than other wicking shirts. If it's a themed race, I'll mix it up a little. I wore UA stormtrooper, death star and Darth Vader shirts for SWDS. If it's cool to start a race, I'll use wicking sleeves for warmth and pull them off when I get warmed up once the race starts.

Regardless, I always wear shirts with sleeves. Singlets and tanks just feel weird without something covering my shoulders/upper arms.

ATTQOTD: I almost always run in a singlet/tank. I can't stand short sleeve shirts when I run! The only exception is when it is cold I will wear a tech hoodie over it but unless it is freezing I usually end up shedding it for just the tank. So basically all my race/tech shirts are in my daily wear rotation for work or hanging out at home.

ETA: For races I always wear a singlet/tank. If it's cold I will wear arm sleeves that I can shove in the pocket of my Sparkle Skirt when I get hot.

@LSUlakes So glad to hear the work situation is working out. Absolutely no problem with you venting non running stuff on here!

QOTD: What is your preference for type of running shirt on your daily runs? How about for races?
I only run in clothes made from wicking fabrics. If it is above 40 degrees, I run in a sleeveless shirt. I wear the same clothes in races that I wear on my regular runs.

Always tech fabric or bamboo/viscose with short sleeves and a v-neck, and they have to be just a certain level of fitted. I HATE tank tops and anything overly tight, and I also hate anything super loose.

ATTQOTD: I think the latest I've run, outside of night races, is around 6-7 in the summer months. Like others I prefer not to be running in the dark.

QOTD: What is your preference for type of running shirt on your daily runs? How about for races?

ATTQOTD: Same for daily and races: tech fabric - not too tight, not too loose, just right. Singlets in the heat, long sleeves in the cold, short sleeves in between. And CHEAP. I'll drop $$ on shoes and capris/skirts, but not on tops, for some reason.

ATTQOTD: I always run in a short sleeve tech shirt in warmer weather, training and races. Although I am fundraising for a charity for my race on 7/9, and I'll be wearing their tank top for the first time then. I have been thinking about getting some tank tops for summer runs. It might help even out the wicked farmer tan that I already have going.
