The Running Thread - 2016

The more important question of the day should be: Has anyone worn this outfit while utilizing the running trails around WDW? Personally, I have my wind suit packed already for our trip.

90's Disney Running Couple is definitely an opportunity for the most obscure reference costume at an upcoming rD race.

ATTQOTD: The times I have been on Orlando for a conference and stayed in the Disney area. Buena Vista Drive and Hotel Plaza Drive have a nice wide sidewalk, and before construction, Downtown Disney was nice to run through in the early morning hours.

Oh ya, for sure...I remember wondering the first time I ran it if I could find a spot to sneak through somewhere to Orange Lake Resort and run through there to the nice wide sidewalks of 192. There might be a way but I never found it. Like you, there's NO WAY I'm running on the shoulders of the roads at Disney.

Not as brave as you and @PrincessV . As I ran up to the "no trespassing" (or something to that extent sign) on the AKL back road and a guard showed up on a ATV type vehicle and just looked at me. I pretended it was never my intention to run on that path and just didn't run at all. Next year I think I'll do more loops in the underground parking at AKL. Too bad they got rid of the path around the hotel that was on the map but not actually in existence. I asked the front desk where to run and they told me the path, and then another CM looked over and said nope that's gone now. Not sure why, guessing safety precaution for the animals and guests.

QOTD: When at Disney, but not for a running event, what are some good running routes you have run or heard of? Can you run on the shoulder of roads?
I don't believe you can run on shoulders of the roads. Most of the resorts have new balance running trails. I haven't run on them but I think some great ones would be around BC,YC, and BWI. Another good one would be POR and POFQ.

ATTQOTD: The only place I have actually run is at POFQ when I stayed there last year for W&D. I did the trail loop for a shakeout run the night I got there (Thursday).

ATTQOTD: The only time I've ever gone for a run at Disney was Marathon Weekend. We did a shake out run around the lake that sits in between Art of Animation and Pop Century. I think it was about 1.5 miles. I liked reading all of the trivia signs along the path.

I generally spend too much time in the park to run but I have heard good thing about running around CBR or the boardwalk if you're up early.

I like the area between the Port Orleans resorts for running, and of course the area around the lake at the Epcot resorts. I would be way too scared to run on the shoulder of the road though. Touring Plans had a good blog post about places to run at Disney World. http://blog.touringplans.com/2013/09/24/run-walt-disney-world/

Thanks for sharing that link. I found a lot of useful information in it!

ATTQOTD: Last year we went right when my marathon training was reaching its highest mileage. It was a 50 mile week. I got in 25 of those miles looping POR and POFQ. It's actually a pretty decent loop that's just under 2 miles. I will be doing it again this year too. I'm afraid of the edge of the road around WDW.

I'm going during a "recovery" week in my plan in the lower 40 MPW range. I don't think I will be able to get all the miles in, but the plan is to get a least 5 runs in and get near 30 miles that week, plus the walking will leave me feeling okay about the whole deal.
You mean you don't run in clothes like that in South FL?

That is where we are staying and finally found a map... sort of. It looks like if you run the lake and the resorts you can get 2-3 miles per lap maybe? Anyone with a GPS map of a run they can post?

In all honesty I wouldn't be too concerned about sticking 100% to a plan if you are at WDW during a recovery week. Sure, get a run or two in if you can, but don't force the issue. Enjoy the time with your family above all else, especially since it's the last time it will be just the three of you.
I've had trips where I've run a few times and trips I haven't run at all...both during marathon training blocks. What I found was the only good reason for me to run at Disney (besides rD of course) was to make more room for 'Ohana & Dole Whip :earsboy:

ATTQOTD: I have never run at WDW other than race days. LOL. First of all, because I haven't been back since I've gotten more consistent with my training. Secondly, I am just not a morning person and haven't been able to do it. My bf did run the WL to Ft. Wilderness loop during marathon weekend this year and said it was pretty great. I think I will try it next time we are there.

Skipped my run yesterday because I had to be a girl (i.e,. wear heels) at work and was on my feet ALL DAY. By the time I got home, there was no way I could run on those puppies. So, I will just slide all my running days to the right this week. :) Sometimes I wonder who I am? Old me would have just skipped that run and only run twice this week. Ha.

I liked running around Fort Wilderness & along the trail to Wilderness lodge (haven't done it in many years though, I was in high school then). I don't run on vacation unless it's a race trip which seems to be the trend lately anyway.

QOTD: When at Disney, but not for a running event, what are some good running routes you have run or heard of? Can you run on the shoulder of roads?

My favorite route hands down is around Crescent Lake, down the canal to DHS, and back. I try to do a few loops and head up and over the road to the Swan side of the canal as well. I also really like to run along the river at Port Orleans but you have to do a lot of laps to get in any real mileage. Coronado is also another fun resort to run around and, if you are staying there, you have the added bonus of the only pool on property that has lane lines. I think it is the only pool with them at least.

Yes, I do run on roads at Disney. If I were doing a race that started at WWoS I would stay at POP and run to WWoS as my warmup. There is incorrect information that Disney won't allow you on the roads but that is not true. They may say you aren't allowed on the roads but Florida pedestrian law trumps Disney's rules unless it is a private road inside one of the parks. Public roads, even on private property, are public roads. Just make sure to follow it and you are good. I do the vast majority of my running on roads even if there is a sidewalk with only a very few exceptions.

ATTQOTD: DD26 and I have always stayed at All Star Sports when we stay on property and we do the NB trail there, which is just up to McDonalds and back to the end of the road. Very exciting, lol! When we stay offsite we always stay at Bonnet Creek and they have a trail around their lake which is very nice. :)

ATTQOTD: Our DVC home is Beach Club so usually i run around the path between BC, YC, Swan & Dophin, Epcot and HS. This last trip for DS, we stayed at Pop and I did a short run along the path between Pop and Animation. I find Disney to be very run friendly (short distance anyway)

We usually stay at BW Villas or BC Villas. So, the standard run would be around the lake with diversions to the EPCOT gate and HS gate. Every time I've stayed at BLT it's been for a challenge weekend and I haven't bothered running additional miles.

QOTD: When at Disney, but not for a running event, what are some good running routes you have run or heard of? Can you run on the shoulder of roads?

On another thread, I posted these running routes in the Boardwalk/Hollywood Studios area. In March (Spring Break), when I was training for the Star Wars Dark Side Challenge, I ran 52.5 miles at WDW over eight days. Here are the three training routes I used from the Yacht Club, but they are applicable to anybody at Yacht Club, Beach Club/BCV, Boardwalk Inn/Villas, or Swan/Dolphin:

4.9 mile route: https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/1099252184

6 mile route (same as 4.9 mile route but adds a loop around HS parking lot): https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/1090526683

7 mile route (same as 6 mile route but adds out/back on sidewalk along Buena Vista Drive and an additional loop around HS bus station): https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/1093614512

So, for 10 miles, I just did the 4.9 mile loop twice plus a little more around the Boardwalk. For my 14 miler, I did the 7-mile loop twice.

QOTD: When at Disney, but not for a running event, what are some good running routes you have run or heard of? Can you run on the shoulder of roads?

I have run around POR before. It's beautiful. I believe every resort has running trails, but I could be wrong. There should be a sign posted somewhere with a map.

Y'all are making me out of breath just reading about the temperatures. Anything over 60 is too hot for running, as far as I'm concerned! I eventually have to break down and do it when I'm training for a Disney half, but I do a lot of running on a treadmill or at sunrise in the summer.

This is not specifically running related, but I wanted to share because I think it's applicable and easy to lose track of as we focus on our training goals, distances and paces while running. My wife is a HS principal in downtown Raleigh. As a result she has to park in a lot about a quarter mile away and walk in. Today as she crossed the street in front of her school in a crosswalk, with the light, she was hit by a car making a left turn with a driver looking for a parking space and not paying attention to what was in front of her.

Most, if not all of us, have to cross streets with or without lights and crosswalks during our running. I just want to emphasize how important it is to maintain situational awareness of the cars around us, regardless of the presence of a crosswalk, walk signal or traffic light. It just takes one stranger not paying attention to cause serious injury. When I come to an intersection with a car while running I try to make eye contact with the driver before crossing. Still, I've had a close call or two when my mind wandered and I didn't make sure to do that.

I'll also throw out how important it is to carry ID when you run, just in case. Keep in mind, too, that you may not be able to respond if an accident happens. I won't run without my Road ID. Whatever type you find you like, use it.

My wife will be fine. She was very fortunate to just sustain scrapes, bruises and strains. She hurts, but nothing is broken. If by sharing, even one injury is prevented, it will be worth it. I consider us all friends here and I don't want you or your families to have to deal with something like this.
