The Running Thread - 2016

ATTQOTD: just got two new pairs of shoes this week. Yay!
Probably the only thing I could use now are some new socks...primarily use Wrightsock but open to other good sock suggestions.
Could also use a healthy does of patience and resolve to get through the summer training months, where can I buy those?

Hrm, socks is something I need to work on. My Thorlo Experia's have been letting me down lately. Three long runs/races now in the past month where I've gotten a blister. I got a big blister on the bottom of my right big toe during a long run and then again during my 10 mile race, and then at my half last weekend I got the beginnings of an irritation/blister in that location (only the beginnings because I put a bandaid there and it mostly stayed put) and also got a large blister on the tip/bottom of my 2nd to last right toe.

So true! I keep trying especially for the summer, but no. They just do not work for me. Wedgies, chafing in problematic places, riding up until they look like hot pants. Just no. I do have a pair from Athleta that are spandex, with pockets on the legs, and those I like. I may look into the Saucony you recommended thanks!

You may try to Saucony Bullet shorts. They are a 4" inseam, so a tad shorter. They have the pockets on the sides though, so I love them also. Again stalk Amazon. I got my last pair for $13 a few weeks back.

Big fan of the Glycerin. Just got the Glycerin 13 on sale at a local running store.
The "14"s come out in early June, but the 13 model will be new to me.

That is the way I do it as well. Just got a 13 and will start wearing it in June. Since the 12 seemed to disappear around Xmas time, I will probably get at least one more 13 in the near future.

QOTD: What piece of equipment, or running accessory, do you not currently have that you want or plan to buy next?
There's nothing I need except maybe better running pants for the winter. I carry most of my weight in my calves and thighs so even now that I'm running and they're more muscled they're still huge. I bought the running pants that match my capris for the rest of the year but I find they try to cling to my calves and I end up feeling like they're going to fall off when I run. I would like to fix that.

Oh I also have a pair of Glycerin 13's I haven't started yet but if I found a good deal once the 14s came out I would go for it. I have a cool color not sold in the states from when I was travelling.

Saw you had posted about Ironman aspirations yesterday and meant to reply back and warn you what you're getting into :) Have you done any tri's before?

I have not. And I seriously doubt I would ever do Ironman distances, but sprints and Olympics seem fun. I've got a good friend gearing up for her first Ironman this fall, so I've received some insights and warnings from her. :) I'm interested in tris just to change things up a bit and get into something new after Dopey. However, I will have to get over a fear of crashes first.

Plus... my wife really wants that "I don't do triathlons...." t-shirt. You know the one.

Confession: I don't have a bike! My hubby has a roadbike that I don't even want to talk about the money he has put into it (well, you probably already know.) He's tinkered with it quite a bit. I think he went through several seats before he landed on one that didn't make him "go numb" etc. But my string of bikes I used to own when living downtown got stolen one after another after another after another (one was off a third story balcony and it was locked!!!) and I just never got around to buying one now that we have a house. He has a dock in the basement he plugs it into and rides for forever when the weather is bad. Maybe I need to finally get one (not as expensive as his though!!!)
OH, but our city now has City bikes that you park at all the different docking stations...I forgot about that! Maybe we need to go on a city date soon. Lake front trail but not running??!!! hmmmmmm

I have a Giant Alight and I LOVE it. It's a hybrid bike, so it's not as fast and light as a road bike, but it's definitely better than the cruiser I used to have. It's aluminum and has upright flat-bar handle bars. You can get extras added to it, like racks or fenders or whatever to make it more of a city bike, but I don't really need those things for what I use it for.

That said, my husband just ordered his FOURTH bike - ugh. So, now he has a road bike, a hybrid, a fat bike and a fixie that he built himself over the winter. Too. Many. Bikes.

Since we have some bike talk today - anyone suggest a good, moderately priced trainer? I would like to ride some at home to get back into it and for some cross training.

For #2, I do all my running in Altra...

Oh, I should have asked about this. I was in Altras for about 8 months. You might want to consider a standard drop shoe now for your achilles. While I love the concepts of the Altra, I won't be going back.

Shorts: I cut out the liners, and go with a good sport boxer brief underneath, so no wedgies/chaffing. I recommend this for gents or ladies. (Patagonia has some awesome shorts with just the right amount of pockets. Pricey, but I love them.)

Socks: For me, the Injinjis have eliminated my blisters. They don't take long to get used to, either.

hahaha yes I know the shirt :) Sprints and Olympics are lots of fun, and the "mixing it up" in training is a great thing!

Sorry, I don't quite follow your line of thinking...what's this "Too. Many. Bikes." you speak of???

Yeah, well, clearly he doesn't either!!
We live in a little historic house and we don't have a garage (and can't build one - stupid historic overlay), so, basically, these bikes just take up ALL. THE. ROOM. I told him it's getting to the stage where it's one in, one out - he buys another one, he's got to sell one!

I have both a Tacx mag trainer and an Elite fluid trainer and the fluid is much nicer to ride on in my opinion, but my mag trainer has more bells and whistles. A fluid trainer feels more like you're actually riding outdoors and that is what I would suggest looking at first.

I only have one bike but man whenever I went to a triathlon I wanted all the bikes - bike envy is a real thing!

Oh man I just read this and had to laugh...I'm working from home today and here's the view from my laptop at the dining room table. My living room has been converted into a makeshift bike shop :rotfl2:

I've considered a power metre but can't bring myself to drop the cash on one yet...my trainer has power built into it which worked pretty well through the winter but now that I'm getting out on the road I don't have a power source to work off of. I have a general idea of my watts based off of speed and cadence...I always try to spin pretty easy and use cadence as the my basis of my effort on the bike. Would be nice to have a power meter one day though.

I love my power meter. It's improved my training and my racing dramatically in just a few months. I wish I hadn't waited so long to get one.

However, I will have to get over a fear of crashes first.

There are two kinds of cyclists. Those that have fallen and those that will. It's kind of inevitable that sooner or later you'll crash or fall over. It's why you wear a helmet. Even zero speed falls in the parking lot can hurt. :rolleyes1

As long as n+1 = d-1, there aren't too many bikes.

I have a CycleOps Jet Fluid Pro I'm very happy with. I'd love to have a smart trainer, but that's not in the cards right now. The fluid trainer works great, isn't too noisy, and combined with Zwift helps keep me entertained for hours at a time.

Wow! Thank you guys for teaching me about the benefits of slower training! I honestly had no idea about that. I am already slow actually, but during my run intervals push myself. Especially when I am going up hills. I wonder if I would benefit from only doing that once or twice a week? Thanks for giving me some new stuff to ponder.

ATTQOTD: The only thing I "need" right now is a new foam roller. I have one, but it's quite short in length and too fat. I would love a longer one with bumps coming out of it or something. I took a killer ballet barre class the other day (I realize that sounds like an oxymoron! lol) and I could really use a better rolling session.
