The Running Thread - 2016

I am on that site now, actually! :) What I really want doesn't exist. LOL. I want something like the 235, with the higher-end running features, but I don't need all the text and email notifications and all that since I get that on the Apple Watch. I'm not willing to switch completely. My Apple Fangirl card would be revoked. :)

The 220 will get data to Strava through Garmin Connect but it doesn't come with the hear rate strap. It it will connect to other heart rate monitors again through blue tooth. I run with a heart rate monitor that goes on your forearm. I have the watch connected so everything ends up in Gsrmin Connect, Strava, and Training Peaks.

Thanks! As of right now I am running the Bull City Race Fest half marathon on 10/16, the Richmond Half marathon on 11/12, and the Disney marathon on 1/7. Goal is to run 2:11:00 for either of the half marathons and just finish in the upright position for the full!

See you in Richmond. Doing the half also.

AATTQOTD:...Here's an example of "my" strand. This is not me or my image by the way. :)
I love the Strand! I used to rollerblade there all the time as a kid through grad school from MH pier to the wall and back and grabbing ice cream or a sip of water at Lapperts (now gone sadly). Still miss the dolphins jumping in the sun. I always avoided the area on the weekends during the summer though, it's frat row. Gross! Back then, I thought all the runners were crazy. Times have changed! Not sure I'd run there in the summer though, no shade!

QOTD: I'm wondering what person-made structures you see frequently... or what has been some of the most memorable? What do you simply like to see? I'm thinking about Bridges, houses, buildings, etc., but bring up anything.

I do my shorter runs and track runs here in my neighborhood ... basically, I run a big square around the neighborhood and time it so I can finish to meet friends for lunch or Happy Hour, and then I walk back home.

For my longer runs, I head down to our riverfront trail system and run there - most recently, I've taken to running up and down the low water crossings on the river because it helps give me some hill work AND it's pretty cool to feel like I'm basically running across rushing water.

A couple of pictures from my last run:

Yes, I agree! No cover at all. My attempt will be to go early once summer really hits. Unfortunately for me, 9 a.m. is early and I'm thinking I'll have to attempt even earlier than that. Baby steps!

Most of the time it's not too bad. Most of the frat is on the sand playing volleyball these days or hanging out on the balconies. Lots of runners with dogs now, which entertains and distracts me because I want to pet them all!

Really depends on direction I run. If I head towards campus there is Spartan Stadium or the Breslin Center if I head out towards the farm land it is all barns and silos. There are a couple farms I love with lots of land large ponds and cool old farm houses. But my favorite things to look at are the red cedar river and forest land along the river trail.

Not too late to join this thread is it? My runs mostly consist of either neighborhood (a bunch of hills and houses) or the treadmill while Paw Patrol is on so that my kids can be distracted while I run. I enjoy running on the American Tobacco Trail near my house when I can.

Welcome!

ATTQOTD: On my "normal" weekend runs I usually see one or more of the following: The Mississippi River and the I-10 bridge that runs over it in Baton Rouge, The USS Kidd, Tiger Stadium / LSU campus, and the capital building in Baton Rouge. Some unique sites seen while running have been everything from the WDW marathon! My personal favorite is the Citgo sign / Fenway park at the Boston Marathon. The end is near when you see those icons.

I would love to see this on my runs. My husband and I miss Louisiana - we both grew up there. Although, I don't know if I could banned running in your humidity.

ATTQOTD: I don't see anything great on my normal routes. Boo to boring neighborhoods.

Welcome to The Running Thread @baxter24!
It's a great way to share info about lots of running topics.

Very cool structures that everyone has posted so far.
My regular runs are spent in my neighborhood or at the park so lots of trees, geese, dogs, neighbors, etc. Hard to maintain pace when you are stopping to chat with friends, dogs, etc. I live in the heart of Civil War history in Central Virginia and surrounded by battlefields and historical landmarks. Sometimes I will run past a local winery but haven't stopped for samples yet! But not a lot of man-made structures on my daily runs.

I almost forgot. So I have a question for you all. I have an Apple Watch. I love it. I am an Apple fan-girl all the way. However, I've been thinking I want a dedicated running watch. The Strava apple watch app, while better than others, doesn't have a lot of options — I think it shows overall mile pace and not current pace, although I'm really not sure about that as it doesn't say anywhere that I've found. And there is a definite lag when I raise my wrist to look at it. And also, the audio alerts on Strava only start at 1/2 mile intervals (I use these alerts to know my walk segments). I would still wear my apple watch on runs as I like the notifications and filling in all my activity circles.

So here's my question. I know some of you have mentioned that your Garmin syncs automatically with Strava. So does that mean I wouldn't have to also run Strava? I'm trying to decide if I NEED a running watch with heart rate since I will still run with my Apple Watch, but I still want the heart rate data in my Strava records. Can anyone provide some guidance? I was looking at the FR 230 or 235, but that's a little more than I wanted to pay considering I have already have the investment in the apple watch.
I'm in the same situation. I also have an Apple Watch and love it. I'm a big apple guy. I've been looking at getting a Harmon lately just for running. I don't want anything expensive either.

AATTQOTD: Here's another for parking lot runs, although I'm trying to get out of that and my track runs. Going outside my complex though isn't any more exciting, basically an industrial park. On my long runs though, I go run on the strand at the beach. My favorite part is checking out all the homes that I will never afford. And if your curtains are open, I am definitely checking out your house! One even had a HARLEY parked inside right in front of the window like it was a museum piece instead of their home. I also like watching the ones that are being redone, as in total demolition and see how fast it goes back up. I guess things happen quickly when they are multi-million dollar homes.

Here's an example of "my" strand. This is not me or my image by the way. :)

Getting out to run here everyday would be a lot easier than where I run.

QOTD: I don't have any man-made structures of any significance to run by on my training runs. Races, now that is a different story. I did a 10K through the historic streets of Boston last year. I did a 10K with the finish line on the 50 yard line of Gillette Stadium. I did a 1/2 marathon with the finish line at the Mayflower. But my favorite man-made structure to run is WDW, obviously. And yes, I mean the whole resort. Considering it used to be swampland I think the whole place is a pretty impressive display of engineering. I didn't LOVE the stretch from MK to AK, it was a little boring, and WWoS is not the most exciting either, but I still love the whole experience.

I would LOVE to run through some of the places I have seen today but especially DC. I do plan to do a race there some day.

I went on a field trip with 2 of my kids today and we went to see a play. You know what, it wasn't Disney. :rolleyes1:rolleyes1 (Since we were talking about it yesterday I had to add it in).

I run around a parking lot. I don't see much of anything other than cars and walls. :(

I've done that. It's horrible! I usually run around the waterfront in my town. It's not a huge area, so it is a lot of loops, but it's the prettiest scenery we have. My favorite place to run EVER (besides Disney) was the University of Oklahoma (Boomer Sooner!). I only get to go once a year, but I love it!

QOTD: What is you next vacation/trip you are going on that is not Disney or running related?

ATTQOTD: The next couple of trips I have planned are for either a running event, or a trip to Disney... So nothing planned outside of that.

Good luck again to all the racers this weekend and I hope everyone else has an enjoyable weekend.

QOTD: What is you next vacation/trip you are going on that is not Disney or running related?
I don't have any trips planned other than Marathon weekend 2017. That will be a big one. Other than that we might go up north once or twice to my uncles house.

QOTD: What is you next vacation/trip you are going on that is not Disney or running related?

Our family goes on a golf vacation/family reunion to Northern Michigan every year so I have that coming up at the end of July/early August. That trip and Marathon Weekend are my two big vacations every year.
