The Running Thread - 2016

ATTQOTD: No movie probably. But, I did order the mystery singlet from INKnBurn in honor of May the 4th. Does that count?

Question for anyone who wants to chime in. I am currently not eating sugar or wheat. Can anyone suggest some racing fuel to try for my Half a week from Saturday? I have just been using raisins and will use them for my rescheduled Crawfest 10k this weekend but I'd like to try something different for a half. I used to use a mix of M&M's, candy corn and pretzels but I really don't want to go back to sugar and wheat since I am feeling so good avoiding it (plus lost 5 lbs and 9 inches, 5.5 just from my waist, in 30 days). Has anyone tried dried pineapple or almonds?

We recently bought these Cliff Organic Fuel things. It's basically mashed sweet potato and sea salt. They make other flavors as well.

ATTQOTD: No Star Wars for me. I'm not a big movie watcher, and I've already seen TFA twice in the theaters recently, plus we watched the Despecialized edition of Episode 1 at Christmas. We do need to prep for Civil War, and rented Winter Soldier, but probably won't get around to watching that until this weekend maybe (and then Civil War next weekend). Tonight we have puppy school and by the time we get back home from that, I just want to collapse and eat dinner and watch something mindless like Quantico. :D

QOTD: Its May 4th. Which Star Wars film will you be watching today?

No time for Star Wars today. We've got Playoff Hockey to watch --CAPS vs. Penguins. Let's Go CAPS!!

@GreatLakes You were at the Pig? Forgive me if I knew that and had forgot. Love to hear your thoughts on the half course since one day maybe I will do that one. Is it just as bridge/hilly as the 10k...or more-so? What pig pen were you in for the 10k...I was at the very back of C. Wondering if we ever crossed paths :)
Edited to add...how did it work for you with the 10k followed by the 5k? I almost did that and then kind of glad I didn't.

My Aunt is pushing for me to try the Cincinatti Queen Bee half marathon which is a women-themed race in October. Maybe one year I'll try that too.

We agree on one thing...watching hockey...but we disagree on who will win tonight...Let's Go Pens!!!:D

This matchup reminds me of the 2009 series when the CAPS were the faster-paced team but the PENS wore them down and took it in 7 games.
Hopefully (for us) a reversal of fortunes this time. Definitely a lot at stake tonight especially with the one game suspension for one of your best players.

Also feel pretty confident that the winner of this series has to be the favorite to win the Stanley Cup.

The wounds are still fresh for me. Hawks fan here. But I had told my father-in-law to take the odds on the Caps back last year when they were visiting Vegas and if they win he will get a nice payday and I will be able to say I am smart. I also told him to take Dallas, so if they face each other I'm looking very very smart.
Just whoever does come out in the East...if you end up playing the Blues...please just sweep them :)

Wow @roxymama. You successfully predicted the two best teams in hockey.....before the season even started. Pretty cool.
I'm headed to Vegas in July...got any thoughts on NFL teams?!!!

I don't meant to brag (yes, I do) but I used to be very successful at fantasy hockey before being a mom completely wiped my time and brain power of staying on top of things. I used to be able to name goalies in every teams system...etc. It was a bit insane. We've had hawks season tickets for a long time now (got them at $8 bucks a seat, can you believe that!) So I love me some hockey...I just wish I could keep up more with all the teams like I used to. (Then again, my keeping up poorly is probably someone else's "how do you know all that?")
Before running was my thing, we used to travel a ton to see other teams. Even a trip to Ontario to watch some junior hockey.
So yeah...love it

Oh wait, you asked about NFL. Ummmm...don't bet on the Bears...or maybe DO bet on the Bears since they are freaks of nature and always do the opposite of what seems probable or sensible.
(disclaimer...please don't bet on the bears)

Hmmm I don't know playing football wasn't easy but I don't know if it is more difficult than running a half or full. I think everything has its own difficulties and its hard to compare. One thing I think is difficult probably more than anything is seeing a loved one go through a terrible disease such as cancer and you can't do anything to help. That's something I am going through with my grandma right now and it's something I wouldn't wish on anyone.

Thank you for sharing and for being real! I just lost a family member this past weekend to cancer. It has been a very long and difficult winter/spring. I think I share your perspective here, I have no means of comprehending facing my own mortality and trying to support someone who is has been terribly difficult. I guess, offer love, prioritize and above all listen. I have learned so much recently about myself and the things I should value as I watched my father-in-law gracefully lose his battle with cancer. Cancer sucks!

Separately, not my best running month; 101 miles.

Trying to catch-up...

QOTD: Sleep and Star Wars

I do not sleep anywhere near enough. I am sure this is my number one culprit in struggles to get up in the morning for an early run. I think I average 5 hours a night; really need it to be in the 6-7 range.

No Star Wars for me tonight. Maybe this weekend.

I have been looking at Altras due to width. I wear NB and Asics now--did you find it hard to go from 8-9mm drop from heel to toe in the NB to the 0 drop in the Altras?

I have nothing to prove my opinion here, but please be careful! Last year I purchashed a pair of zero drop Altra trail shoes. I ran in the several times and then completed a trail half marathon. In the next week I developed tendinitis in my right Achilles' tendon. It took about three months to really get past the issues. I beleive going from my regular running shoe to a zero drop running shoe, at minimum, really influenced the injury.

That is the most common injury associated with a transition to barefoot or zero drop running. You are supposed to ease into it, beginning with only 5 minutes and creeping up over the course of several months. You also have to take the same precautions if you change to a mid-foot or forefoot strike from a heel strike.

QOTD: What is your 'gotta have it' nightly sleep regimen? How little sleep does it take before you know things are not going to go well the next day?

ATTQOTD: I must have 6 hours of sleep to make the following day productive. During marathon training or high mileage training periods I prefer 8 hours. Much less than that and my workouts suffer. I believe sleep is a very important part of the training process, so I was curious how everyone else felt about the subject.

Ran a few miles yesterday at the new house for the first time! I was making the block one last time and two little kids playing outside look at their mom and ask "Why does he keep running in circles?" I got a good laugh at that one. They will be surprised how many laps I have to run once I crank up training again. Also discovered that a member of a facebook group I belong to called 100 miles a month club, also lives in the neighborhood. From his post he is much faster than me. Challenge accepted!

I usually get about 6 hours. I'm sure I could use more but I have never needed a lot of sleep and with 4 kids, a full time job, regular chores, and running it is hard to fit in more sleep.

Do any of you have any recommendations for a very thin cell phone case (iPhone 6s) that will protect against water?

I don't need an arm band or anything like that. I usually have my phone in the leg pocket of my sparkleskirt, but I sweat a lot and of course there's sometimes rain, and so I always put it in a ziploc baggie to protect it from getting wet. But this leaves me unable to use the camera, which I would like to use occasionally. So I'm looking for something that leaves my phone not-bulky but will protect my phone from water damage from sweat or rain while also leaving the camera usable.

I have 2 suggestions. For the case you could do LifeProof. If you don't want to get that you could get a Roo Pouch. They are water and sweat proof. I had heard about them on the Marathon Training Academy podcast and they had a booth at the marathon expo so I picked one up. It is awesome. I don't even notice it on and I don't need to use my armband anymore. It was a whopping $30 if I remember correctly.

QOTD: Its May 4th. Which Star Wars film will you be watching today?

ATTQOTD: Since we moved in over the weekend, its been non stop and I haven't watched more than 10 minutes of TV. Tonight will be no different so unfortunately no movie for me tonight.

wallpaper_1x.jpg

Not for me tonight. I will never stay awake long enough and my friend is in WDW today and has been sending me pics all day so I need to watch my Disney videos and stuff instead.

Unfortunately I won't get a chance to watch the movies since we are flying out to DL today but we are headed to the Disney Store now to get the pin and see what special activities they have going on today.

I'd rather be flying out to DL all day long over watching a movie that can be watched anytime. :) Good luck to you and everyone else with a race this weekend.

Sorry to hear about your loss!

QOTD: Its May 4th. Which Star Wars film will you be watching today?

None for me. I don't know if it was before my time, but I've never really got into Star Wars. Which is weird because I normally like futuristic space shows and movies. I loved Star Trek & Battlestar Galactica. Somehow, Star Wars is lost on me. Lol.

I'd be happy to keep trying though. Lol.

This is correct. My husband runs in Altras. He started in Saucony's with an 8mm drop. Transitioned slowly to Newtons with a 4.5 mm drop then to a 2 mm. Finally ending up in zero drop shoes. He loves his Altras because of the wide toe box. I love making fun of his paddle feet when he wears them. :lmao:

QOTD: What is your 'gotta have it' nightly sleep regimen? How little sleep does it take before you know things are not going to go well the next day?

Generally at least 6, but I can do with as little as 4. I SHOULD aim for 7 as I'm tired at night but it's the only time I can spend with my wife, my kids (until they go to bed), or just time for myself.

Yeah, I definitely would not recommend just switching straight over like I did to zero drop shoes... I only did it because I already had a couple of years of doing cardio and other boot camp type training in other more or less zero drop shoes (plus I wore them casually a lot), and it felt fine the first few short runs I did in the new running shoes. Since I was just returning from Tink, the only thing I had on my schedule for the next month was 30 minute runs, a 5K, and two 4-5 milers to keep fitness for a mid-June 10K... nothing exceptionally long.

I know I was talking about an achilles tendonitis ache and pain that I am dealing with at the moment, but I have been running in the shoes now for a year. I am dealing with some fallout from being a bit undertrained for my upcoming half in a week and a half (I've been doing all my weekend long runs but skipping a lot/most of my 2x a week weekday 30 minute runs for the past few months) and two weeks of hilly long runs.

Just got back from several days away with DH (kid free!) and it has been fun catching up on this thread!
April Training Report

Hooray, it's May! How did everyone's training go in April?
63 miles for me! I was extremely consistent with my strength training program in April. I may not have racked up a ton of miles, but I'm always happy if I am working out 6 out 7 days and I pretty much did that every week. I hope it continues into May!

QOTD: What are some things that you have done or do, that you think are more difficult than running a marathon (or your longest race distance)?
Yeah I agree moving is tough! I guess the toughest thing was getting through that first bout of intense sleep deprivation/learning to nurse/giving up all free time/new Mom thing. So hard, but so worth it!

QOTD: What is your 'gotta have it' nightly sleep regimen? How little sleep does it take before you know things are not going to go well the next day?
I really need 7 hours, but shoot for 8. My workouts go the best with 8 or 8 1/2 hours of sleep under my belt.

QOTD: Its May 4th. Which Star Wars film will you be watching today?
Sadly there were no Star Wars movies for me tonight. I went to a local production of the musical Jane Erye with my Mom, sister, brother, and brother's gf. I KNOW my brother wishes we watched a Star Wars movie instead! ;)
