The Running Thread - 2016

So I am going to meet with the guy tomorrow and explain to him my plans and see what kind of workouts he can develop to help strengthen core muscle groups to help with running. Working out during lunch will also prevent me from eating cra$$y food for lunch. So, I have a plan, just need to be careful.

Time for my semi-regular plug for yoga. It's very good for building strength in your core, legs, and back. You'll also find it very beneficial in keeping you flexible. You're going to need the stretching and flexibility to overcome the tightness that will naturally develop from running a higher volume of miles.

Every time you plug yoga I always think "I should do that" and then I forget and don't.

How much time do you guys usually take off after a half? For cross training and running? I'm anxious to get back out there but I don't want to over do it, especially because Tink is in 2 weeks.

If it was your first half I would take 4-7 days off, but if you have done a few of them 1-2 days. With another half coming up in two weeks, I wouldn't go much more than the 4 days and just get a few easy runs in this week. Go for 7-10 miles this weekend and then some more easy miles leading up to your next half.

@MommaoffherRocker I'd agree with this. I'll echo that any runs you do should be of the easy paced variety because with only two weeks between you aren't likely to make any physical gains between the these two events. Just make it to the start of the next half rested and relaxed from the previous.

QOTD: As our days are getting longer and the temps increase, we have more time to get our runs in outdoors when there is still sunlight out. Do you use sunscreen when you go out for a run?

ATTQOTD: This is one of those things I should do more often. It is usually late or very early when I run and a sunburn is something I am able to avoid. Yet, if I know I will be out there for a while I will use it. At are 32, I have had basal cell skin cancer removed twice so far, the first time being in my mid 20's. The second time at 30 and I have a ugly scar on my back from this process. I get checked yearly to monitor the situation.

ATTQOTD: Most of my runs are at night which means they are started and finished after dark. No sunscreen needed. For my long runs on the weekend, I am pretty good about using it. This past weekend I wasn't though. It was the first time running in a while in full sun and warm temps, so it wasn't part of my routine. I wear those hippie band headbands that come down on my forehead, so now I have a ridiculous tan line right across the middle of my forehead as a reminder.

I always wear sunscreen and protective clothing when I run or golf (my two major outdoor summer activities). I have fair skin and don't particularly understand the appeal of having a tan, so it's not a hardship for me.

Not that you were asking for more podcasts, but I thought I would give my favorites if anyone is interested. Also, if anyone has others they really love, I'd love to hear them! First of all my little brother has a great podcast called The Pixar Podcast. He does a great job and interviews cool people from Pixar, does movie reviews, etc. Some other podcasts I love are, NPR podcasts: Fresh Air, On Point, Embedded, Radio West, Diane Rehm Political Podcasts: NPR Politics Podcast, Ken Rudin's Political Junkie, Five ThirtyEight Elections TV Show podcasts: The West Wing Weekly, The Walking Dead AfterBuzz TV AfterShow, The Americans: Slate TV Club Insider, Masterpiece Studio Disney podcasts: DisUnplugged (and most off-shoots from that one), WDW Radio Show Other podcasts: Anna Faris is Unqualified, Stuff You Missed in History Class, *** with Marc Maron Podcast, Serial, You Must Remember This
Podcasts are awesome :) On a long run, I usually listen to a podcast and then switch to music.

We have several in common. Have you tried Post Show recaps for the Walking Dead? Like them better than AfterBuzz although they do a good Agents of Shield one. Just started listening to Jedi Alliance for Star Wars stuff and Runners World has a podcast now but haven't tried it yet. Also Let's Run Disney is pretty good.

Thanks for the podcast recommendations! I love the West Wing and had never heard of this podcast. I'm also planning on checking out the Star Wars one and AfterBuzz.

QOTD - I always wear sunscreen before weekend runs but am not as good about remembering on weekday runs when I'm trying to get out there after work and before dinner.

Sure do. The sun in this part of the world is pretty brutal.

I generally skip it for afternoon runs because I'm not out for very long. I probably should wear it though. For weekend runs I always wear it because I'm out there for longer.

I only remember to wear sunscreen when I am at Disney! It is so hot and humid here in the summer I usually do treadmill runs. But this year I am planning on doing my long runs outside and have actually purchased sport sunscreen. So hopefully this will remind me to wear it. I need to throw it in my running bag so I will see it when I get my chapstick, sunglasses etc. Thanks for the reminder!

Most of my runs come in the afternoon. I can't say I've ever used sunscreen while running. I guess I've never even really though about it. Last summer in Wisconsin wasn't incredibly warm either. We have a pool and I went in it once the whole summer.

Anyone having trouble with the WDW site? Im looking for rates for 11/8 to 11/13 and it either has "Check Availability" or it never loads. Is something busy going on today and would it be correct to assume that check availability means no rooms available?

I just saw another thread saying the same thing. Are they releasing FD soon? The site always gets wonky right around the time it is released.

I was able to find a room at Wildnerness Lodge but most everywhere said Check Availability. But it did seem to be acting weird so not sure.

There is a sunscreen in the face lotion I put on every morning and then I always wear a hat or a visor. I'm pretty bad at remembering to apply sunscreen unless I have a swimsuit on. A bad habit I should change!
