The Running Thread - 2016

It took Torres getting booted and Suarez getting lucky to not be booted to get you that win yesterday. But I suppose I shouldn't talk too much smack as Barca is still doing way better than my Manchester United team.

LVG's unwitting youth movement is going decently well for the time being. Not sure if all of them will continue to come good in the future, but it's a start toward finding a way forward. I'm not particularly a fan of their managerial succession plan if they do replace LVG with another manager with a history of having a short attention span. If they really want Giggs on the bench it is probably time to throw him into the fire and see if he has what it takes.

I tried to grow a vegetable garden a couple years ago but most of the veggies got eaten by things other than us :( I haven't tried since then. Any tips on keeping deer and bunnies (the prime suspects) away?

Not particularly. I have a fenced yard in a residential area so, fortunately, deer are not an issue. I have a little group of rabbits that use my yard as a safe haven (it's fenced and I take my dog out on a leash, so they know they can make a break for it even if he gets close) and I have been fortunate that they have never really damaged any of my plants. I don't know if that's because of an abundance of other food sources or something I have unwittingly done with my garden that makes it unappealing to them. I see them in the garden all the time, it's not an aversion to the ground or the plants, so I suspect that they just have other food sources in the area that they prefer.

I do like what LVG has done with the youth. I think if Memphis can become more reliable and once Shaw returns to action United will be in a much better place. I don't want Mourinho to come in at all. I think it is a terrible idea. I really think the need to let LVG live out his contract and then move Giggs in. They both have a much better understanding of the United way with youth players and the academy than Mourinho.

Catching up on a few days worth...

Event # 2-April Fools Half in Atlantic City. This is the FLATTEST half course I have ever run. No rain but chilly temps (38) and feisty winds that were 30 mph steady and gusting to 50 mph made it feel colder and tougher. Now I get the April Fools part. Several times I thought I would be knocked down by the wind. Course runs 3.5 miles down the boardwalk and then through residential and commercial streets before turning around. I did not train for this event due to injuries but managed a PR by about 45 seconds.

Nice spinner medal, neon green tshirt, and plenty of food options at the finish. Sort of a party atmosphere with the finish in front of Margaritaville Café and the beach.

Best part was no injuries,

Congrats on your new PR!!

QOTD: After a race in which you reached your goal v/s a race in which you did not, how much of a different person are you between the two?

ATTQOTD: I have a tendency to get down on myself during a race if it is not going the way I planned. Once I finish the race, I can usually put it into perspective and feel okay about it. But, when I run and actually achieve my goal I'm definitely a happier person. :)

My first marathon was in 2009 and I totally mismanaged the run. Like most my first 10 miles were way too fast and I hit the wall at 20 and fought my way to the end and finished with a 4:46. I always felt like I did not accomplish what I wanted because my goal was a 4:30. I figured this was as good as it was going to get as I was never going to run another marathon. A few years back my wife and I started using the Galloway method and since I have completed 5 marathons. This last November I decided I wanted to try and get a PR using the run walk run method, using this method, I as able to log a 4:25 time. I was excited to have gotten a PR but I was on a 4:15 pace through 22 miles and then I hit the wall with a just a little more than 5 k to go! Like I said it felt good but somehow I managed to set a new goal of 4:15 while I was in the middle of the run and now I feel like I did not reach my goal!! Who does that? Now I feel much better that I did in 2009 but I was just so close to the new goal!

I bet your wife repeatedly told you that you shouldn't beat yourself up about not hitting a goal that wasn't even a goal in the first place didn't she? I bet your wife is really smart. :)

QOTD: Are any of your family members runners as well? Do you run with them? How competitive are you with them?

ATTQOTD: My husband runs with me. (If my previous reply wasn't a good enough hint, Chris-Mo, is my husband and recent new member of Disboards) He ran before me and is frankly a much stronger and faster runner, but he's a great partner who runs at my pace typically. One of our daughters started running cross-country this year and she seems to really enjoy it. We will see if that progresses. My SIL and BIL ran one Disney marathon with us as well.

QOTD: What other hobbies do you have other than running?

ATTQOTD: I enjoy reading, but haven't seemed to find the time lately to do much of it. I'm a bit of a binge reader and tend to go through spurts where I read a lot and then go months without any reading. We are also big KC Chiefs football fans and we watch a lot of football during the season. We like swimming as well and are fortunate to have a pool we use a lot in the summer months.

All this talk of football has reminded me that my other hobby (that for some reason I completely forgot to mention) is supporting Crystal Palace football club. Surely the best preparation for running when sometimes you just want to limp over the finish line.

Watching Netflix which doesn't work so well with the running (especially when I have no space in my tiny flat for a treadmill). I have got into cooking recently (always been into baking) from scratch. I have others things I love to do but at the moment with my work schedule it's pretty much split into cooking, Netflix and training for the Disney Paris Half.

Noticed your post count, so I just wanted to say welcome to the boards and the running thread!

Deer and bunnies are tasty... could probably mix the veggies you bated them with into the meal. If that's not an option, a dog to chase them. Deer are not that calm around here, I suppose from the large desire for people here to hunt them. I haven't done so in a very long time, but I love to cook wild game when friends give me a roast or ground meat.

Or when you are uninterested in goals. :earboy2:

They are, nominally and for no particularly good reason, the BPL team I cheer for. They started out so well but have been a really tough watch the second half of this season.

It's always a struggle for me when United has their rare seasons, or run of seasons, like this, but then I always run into someone like yourself and remind myself at lease United is well clear of relegation. :earboy2:

I would join you in making fun of the CP lack of goal scoring, but sadly United only has 5 more even with the likes of Rooney, Martial, Memphis, and the surprising Rashford on their team.

ATTQOTD: I don't have a lot of time for hobbies. My life is pretty well taken up by my running/fitness activities and activities for the kids. I volunteer at their school a lot as well. I enjoy reading, but lately I fall asleep within a few pages of starting. In the summer I enjoy being at my parents Lake house with my kids which includes swimming, paddle boating, kayaking and sometimes hiking. This year I hope to do some paddle boarding as well.

@LSUlakes I need to take my next two races off the calendar. 4/24 - North Shore 10 Miler, and 5/7 - The Big Lake Half Marathon. My physical therapist yesterday said she thought racing in the next month or so was a bad choice for me. She said I could finish, but with my history, I would risk reinsuring myself, and right now should be all about base building for my first full in the fall. You can add that one for me to the list as well. 10/30 Marine Corps Marathon, No Goal. Thanks again for all your hard work!

Ha, that wouldn't work for me since I'm vegetarian :) I've been trying to convince my husband we should get a dog so I'll add this to my list of arguments! We live in a suburb of DC so it's surprising we have so many deer but we also live near a big park and I guess that's where they're coming from.

@Barca33Runner Thanks for the tip! Maybe I should start convincing other people in the neighborhood to plant food and hope that they're attracted over there instead!

lately my hobby is playing the new app game "Disney Magic Kingdoms" - it's a little addictive (and I've never played app games before)
....but I also enjoy crochet, baking, reading, photography (besides for working), & of course anything involving Disney reading/researching/planning
oh and analyzing the Force Awakens and what might happen in the next movies...

@LSUlakes I am running the Disney Paris Half Marathon on September 25th with just a hope to finish at this point (may have a target in the future for it)

Wouldn't be exciting if there wasn't a chance Palace will actually get relegated this season. Oh well! Got a trip to Wembley though which will mean shifting my Sunday run.

Sorry to hear about having to cancel the races. Base building is important though. Hope everything goes well and good luck @ MCM!

QOTD: What other hobbies do you have other than running?

Diving and dog sport are two of my other hobbies, though it's tough to do much of the latter in Erbil. Not much diving there either, really, but the Maldives aren't too far away.

Anyone need to revise their race goal? Hope training has gone well and best of luck to each of you this weekend! Let us know how it goes.

I'm overweight and a bit out of shape, but I'm sticking with my goal as long as it doesn't rain. If it does, I'll be happy just to finish. My bike handling skills are not good enough to really push hard when it's wet.

I'm hoping Mourinho takes over at United. As a Liverpool fan, I have a vested interest in watching him slowly degrade ManU like he did Chelsea.

ATTQOTD: Other hobbies include hiking, photography, travel to Europe (getting more and more expensive), following the Razorbacks.

Before I got into running, I was big into golf and bowling as well. Those have slipped away as I run more and the kids get older.

It is looking good for the at most light rain this weekend (20 to 30% chance). Wind is what is causing turmoil for members of my running club that will be doing Galveston this weekend.

As for soccer, I am rooting for Leicester CIty to pull off the title this season. It is unreal what they are pulling off so far this season. My usually club to cheer for in Europe is Bayern Munich

Good luck John! I've raced in the rain before and while it isn't exactly fun, so long as it isn't too cold it isn't too bad. Just make sure to stay safe out there, that's the main thing!

Oh, great a Liverpool fan, someone I can now ignore. :)

United is still trying to recover from the damage caused by Moyes, they don't need Mourinho doing more damage.

I'm rooting for Leicester City as well at this point with United out of the running. I'm quite impressed with what they've managed to do.

ATTQOTD: Other than running and the kid's activities, I love to cook/bake, go to the beach to look for shark's teeth and go to WDW when we can (we have APs this year)

I watched it twice yesterday LOL

QOTD: What other hobbies do you have other than running?

Fitness in general is a hobby of mine so in addition to running I like biking, hiking, kayaking, swimming, wight training and just about anything else that gets me moving. I also like to cook, I volunteer for an animal rescue with my wife, and my favorites sports are soccer and pro cycling. I'm another Red Devil supporter and also follow Juventus. I recently changed jobs and in taking over a very troubled department at a new company have given up a little of my free time but it is a fun challenge that I am confident will pay off in the long term.

I also really love to travel but some of that will have to take a temporary back seat to the new job responsibilities.
