The Running Thread - 2016

BTW, in MK and just had a dole whip. Life is good.

Oooooh jelly!

Do they still only have the pineapple soft serve Dole Whips? I like the Pineapple Floats myself with the vanilla soft serve. I was so disappointed last time I was there in February that they didn't have it! I had to go to the Polynesian!

My race last weekend was the Run the Bluegrass half marathon and I had a blast! It was my first half (Wine and Dine 2015 was supposed to be my first half). I had only ran that distance once before all the way back in October so I used that time plus 6 minutes for my goal time because I knew the course was going to have a lot more hills than I am used to running. My main goal was to finish but I decided I wanted to give myself a time to shoot for so set my goal for 3:10. The day before the race I went on a van tour of the course and seriously started to have doubts about being able to finish, I couldn't believe the hills. Race day weather was great low 40's and sunny but the wind did pick up some but not horribly. The course was beautiful but tough, the last few miles were hard and I wasn't able to pick up my pace like I usually try to do but I still finished under my goal time. I finished in 3:04:07 which I was very happy with but sure wished I hadn't stopped to use the restroom, I didn't stop for very long but I'm pretty sure I would have been able to get under 3 hours. I hadn't scheduled any other halves yet because I wanted to make sure I still liked the distance after racing it, I'm now looking at a lot of others for this summer and fall. The whole weekend was great, they really put on a nice race with a lot of other tours as well.

ATTQOTD: My in-laws started doing races before me. When I was pregnant with my second son, my mother-in-law and two sisters-in-law did their first half marathon and it looked like so much fun! I had always thought I hated running, but decided to give it a try after having my second. I'm so happy they introduced to me the fun world of races/running communities! We even made up our own half marathon to commemorate my MIL 60's birthday, complete with cheering kids on the sides, water stations, a homemade medal and t-shirt, and a banner we ran through after our 13.1 miles! :D

Congrats on the excellent race. I was laughing as I was reading the part about the van tour of the course and you doubting yourself. I find that to be the worst. Whenever I look at the map of a course it freaks me out, even when I know I have done the distance before. Just seeing it and seeing how far you are going to run it makes me question my sanity on occasion. :rolleyes1:rolleyes1

QOTD: I am the only runner in my family. My kids will run a 5K with me in July but so far it's just me. I only know one other person who runs. All my other friends think I'm crazy.

ATTQOTD: When I told my DH that I wanted to start running he decided he wanted to run too. We have a running date once a week and we run every race together. Our kids have done a couple of local 1 mile races and the kid's races at marathon weekend. The school our boys go to has a run/walk club and we are going to encourage them to sign up next year. As for other family members my brother and his fiancee just so happen to start running around the time I did, unfortunately they live in Delaware so we don't get to run together much.

ATTQOTD: I don't really think I'm that much different. That's probably because my time goals are always secondary to Goal #1: Finish. As long as I have achieved Goal #1 (which, fortunately, I have never failed) I can usually overcome any disappointment about failing to meet my other goals. I tend to be pretty laid-back and maybe my standards are too low, but finishing still means a lot to me regardless of the distance.

Agreed. My primary goal is to finish upright! The difference is that I ran through a lot of pain in the second one, so I'd do a lot of things differently if I could do it all over again.

QOTD: Are any of your family members runners as well? Do you run with them? How competitive are you with them?

ATTQOTD: My dad and step mom run, but my dad had to hang up the running shoes. My step mom used to run religiously, but suffered an ankle injury (non running related) that may not allow her to get back to everyday running. Rarely ran with either of them since we live in different parts of the state. The last time my dad ran was a beer mile we had at my house, and shortly after that a old knee issue ended running for him. He seemed to have really enjoy the beer mile...

Nope! I have a couple of distant cousins who are, but it's mostly just me! My parents are very supportive and proud though. It's like I'm a star athlete. My best friend has starting running in the last year or so though. It is a surprising turn of events for me to be giving sports advice to anyone. lol

I have missed some questions again

Todays QOTD was suggested by @roxymama . QOTD: What are your tips for racing a new distance? Do you try to get a fast time on your first attempt at the distance or are you more conservative to just try to finish the distance?

I aim more to have fun and finish for the new distances but I do train to not finish last.

QOTD: What do you for a living to support your running habits?

I am a Product Quality Information Analyst. I also work part time at a local motorsports park.

QOTD: today's question is a little specific to folks who run with pushing a stroller. What type of stroller do you run with and when running do you push with one hand or two, alternating between both hands?

Kids are grown so no stroller

QOTD: After a race in which you reached your goal v/s a race in which you did not, how much of a different person are you between the two?

Pretty much the same. While I have goals I do not beat myself up.

QOTD: Are any of your family members runners as well? Do you run with them? How competitive are you with them?

One sister does run. About a dozen year ago see ran a 4:56 marathon in her early 40's. I would love to beat that in my late 50's. ::yes::

We got ours at the place next to the Tiki Room, and they did not have vanilla. I just got the cup because it is too sweet with the juice for me. I also prefer the vanilla.

Oh it was delicious:) You had your choice of a whoopie pie (Is that a New England thing?) or a breakfast burrito. I was all about the Whoopie Pie! It was the North Shore Cancer Run in Beverly. There is a 5k and 10k. It was in early November last year, but I just went to the page to get the link to paste, and it looks like they've moved it to mid October this year.

Here is the link: https://nsmcgiving.partners.org/2016run It raises money for the North Shore Cancer Center.
I believe a true whoopie pie is a new england thing. I haven't had a decent one since leaving Maine. I have tried to make my own but could never get that puffiness it is supposed to have. Mine always fell flat and looked more like a cookie. I suspect the magical ingredient is lard!

QOTD: What other hobbies do you have other than running?

ATTQOTD: I enjoy cooking, and bonus points for doing so outside. So naturally, tailgating falls right into this ideal situation with cooking and a football game. I also enjoy a vegetable garden, but with the move this year it will be to late to plant anything.

QOTD: What other hobbies do you have other than running?

I guess I could take the easy answer and say besides running I enjoy swimming and biking, but that's a bit predictable.

We are DVC members and love getting down to WDW, usually get 4 trips a year. Again, probably not too unique on this board :)

One of my favourite hobbies is playing guitar, specifically with a beer at a cottage campfire...hoping to do that this weekend!

QOTD: What other hobbies do you have other than running?
I don't have time for too many hobbies outside of family, church, running, and planning imaginary Disney trips (jk- kind of). I do try to read at least one new book a month, and I certainly love my Netflix after the kids are put to bed (haha can TV watching be considered a hobby??)

QOTD: What other hobbies do you have other than running?

As a family we bowled in leagues when my kids were at home. Now that they are out of the house (and the state :() DH and I bowl occasionally. He is good - I am mediocre! I also like to read. And of course Disney! DD26 and I go about twice a year (now they are run-cations) and DH and I rent a condo at Bonnet Creek for a week once a year and whoever can come just has to pay to get there, we pay for food and tickets, etc. Makes a great family trip! Also baseball! HUGE SF Giants fan! I watch every game and manage to get to a couple when they play the Rockies as DD26 lives in Colorado. We plan my trips to visit her around the Giants playing the Rockies. This year my first marathon is on Labor Day and the Giants will be there Mon, Tue, Wed that week. I think I will be walking very slowly around the ballpark! :)
