The Running Thread - 2016

QOTD: Are any of your family members runners as well? Do you run with them? How competitive are you with them?

ATTQOTD: My dad was a runner when I was really young. I would often do the kid dashes (but I have little memory of it) or I would walk 5k's with my mom while my dad and sister would jog them (that I remember a bit more.) The Indy Mini Marathon was his farthest I believe before he started having bad knee issues. My pajamas growing up were primarily very large race t-shirts I stole from my dad. Currently my father-in-law and husband both run (usually we attend races together but rarely run them together as we are all different speeds at the moment.) My father-in-law does up to half marathons where my husband and I are still working our way up to that. Oh and hubby bikes and swims too (he's tri-training right now.) My sister would like to try run/walk so I will help her through that when she is ready.

Congrats to everyone who had a race this weekend! A lot of goals accomplished. Keep up the hard work.

QOTD: After a race in which you reached your goal v/s a race in which you did not, how much of a different person are you between the two?

ATTQOTD: If its a goal race that I have properly trained for and all of the starts aligned and I just failed to hit the goal, I don't take it well. Major goal hit... Time to hit up facebook. lol

I think I'm becoming a lot more mellow. Missing goals doesn't bother me as much. I think the big realization I've had is, sometimes things just go badly. I need to identify problems quickly and adjust rather than trying to push through and making things miserable for myself. A lot of times I'll have a problem and readjust my goal, but not adjust it enough so I still wind up hating the last couple miles of a marathon.

QOTD: Are any of your family members runners as well? Do you run with them? How competitive are you with them?

ATTQOTD: My dad and step mom run, but my dad had to hang up the running shoes. My step mom used to run religiously, but suffered an ankle injury (non running related) that may not allow her to get back to everyday running. Rarely ran with either of them since we live in different parts of the state. The last time my dad ran was a beer mile we had at my house, and shortly after that a old knee issue ended running for him. He seemed to have really enjoy the beer mile...

I'm the only runner in my family, but my son has started doing well in some of his PE races in middle school so I'm trying to encourage him to sign up for cross country in high school

It's always hard skipping a race but I think you made the right decision. If you had more experience running trails it might have been worth the risk but I would say it wasn't worth injuring yourself and missing any time this year.

Thanks! I think if it had been trails on a nice day or rain on a paved surface I would have done it. It was the combination of the two that made me really nervous.

As far as the question of the day, my husband trained for a 5k and did the Jingle Jungle 5k with me last year as well as a couple local 5ks. But he decided that he didn't really enjoy it so he's not running any more. My dad has walked a couple 5ks with me which is nice. But I have plenty of friends that like to run and a couple of them are even about my pace which is nice. So I definitely have company for races and runs most of the time when I need it.

QOTD: Are any of your family members runners as well? Do you run with them? How competitive are you with them?

My sister started running when I did and I know I've mentioned many times in other places that her deciding to do the 2012 WDW Half was the impetus for the beginning of both of our running journeys/addictions. We are not really competitive. She runs a little faster than me, but we have run a few races together and are relatively close in speed (we were in corrals F and G for the Half and Full during the last Dopey Challenge). I always let her finish in front of me when we race together because I want to feel like I've earned it if I ever beat her.

No one else in our family is really a runner but my mom has walked the 5K and 10K during WDW Marathon Weekend the past couple of years. I am super stoked because it looks like my brother will be joining us for the Dopey next year. He has never run anything longer than a 15K that I am aware of, so it could be an eye-opener for him. We are planning a big family vacation next year around the races so this will be the first time he is down there for Marathon Weekend. He is very competitive and while running the Dopey may not theoretically be the best idea, there is no way he will allow my sister and I (mainly me) to do more than him. I know he is physically capable of doing it and I think his competitiveness will be a positive in helping him prepare. I'm hoping that the experience spurs him to join us more often for future races.

Is anyone from around St. Louis? We are attending a 90th birthday party over Labor Day and my husband found an interesting race on 9/5. It's coincides with the TSG Properties Gateway Cup which is a pro-cycling race. It says "Run/Walk 3.5 Miles (5K+) Flat and Winding. Starting in front of Benton Park on Arsenal- race to the Anheuser Busch Brewery and then past some of the Benton Park Landmarks- Jax Cafe, Venice Cafe, Frazer's Restaurant and Yemanja Brazil." and then "You will get to race two laps of the totally closed race course...and then hang out all afternoon and tailgate during for the races."
This sounds intriguing to me. Anyone familiar with any of the landmarks above or this race? 3.5 miles would be a PR since that's an odd distance.
And the medal...it's an edible pretzel medal apparently!

My DD26 has been a runner for years and finally got me into running so I could run a Disney Half with her last year. And here I am today, 3 half's, 1 half of a half (W&D2015), 2 10k's with many more races on my schedule for the year, including a marathon! We aren't competitive though. She is faster than me but we run Disney races together for fun. I was just 1 corral back from her though, missing her corral time by 5 minutes. (I guess I am a little competitive, lol!)

My DS can run FAST, but he is Navy Reserve and hates running after his last deployment lol! I can't even get him to commit to a 5k on our next years Disney vacation!

My husband has just started running with me on my every other week shorter run on my marathon training schedule. His longest run so far is 3 miles. We are running a 5k together this coming Saturday and another later in April. Not competitive at all - I am super happy that he has decided to run with me!

Everyone else in my family thinks I am crazy for running lol!

QOTD: Are any of your family members runners as well? Do you run with them? How competitive are you with them?

My wife runs but she prefers the other two triathlon disciplines, swimming and cycling. she has started to train our new dog to do races with her but so far he is only up to one mile. He is an Australian Shepherd/Border Collie mix, or at least that is the best guess since he is a rescue, so he should be able to do a 5K once we get him up to that distance.

I have some extended family that runs and are pretty good at it. One cousin went to college on a track scholarship running the 200 and 400a and some of my other cousins run 5Ks. My uncle was a sub-2:40 marathon runner when he was younger.

QOTD: Are any of your family members runners as well? Do you run with them? How competitive are you with them?

My brother runs as well, and as I've mentioned in various other posts is the main reason I'm going for Dopey in January. It has always been, and will probably always be, about competition between us. I decided to try Dopey because I am almost certain I can do better than he did in 2014, and will be able to beat him in 2017. We've never run a race together, and he is much more experienced than I at longer races right now, but that isn't stopping me from challenging him.

My mom recently started running after my brother signed her up for the Princess 5k. She had a good time, but really wants a metal medal, and is considering doing the 10k marathon weekend in 2017. She's not competitive at all.

QOTD: Are any of your family members runners as well? Do you run with them? How competitive are you with them?
My wife runs and actually started about a year before me...she was the one that got me fit and healthy.

My Mum has started running in the last couple years too and she is getting ready to run her first marathon in a couple of months. She's doing her hometown race, the Edinburgh Marathon in Scotland. It will also be her first time back in Scotland in nearly 40 years!

My sister has been on a weight-loss journey of her own and is now running and training for her first triathlon as well. She is looking great and really enjoying herself.

The kids (7 and 12) have run a handful of 5K's with us with mixed results...I remember running one 5K with a kids perched on my shoulders for the last 4K or so :) They like the idea of the races but find the actual running to be a bit tough. They seem to prefer the kids' triathlons over running races.

My dad is getting in on the action now too...he retired last year and has now started to do daily one-hours "walks" on the treadmill. I say "walks" because he refuses to call it running, even though he has the speed set at 5mph!

QOTD: Are any of your family members runners as well? Do you run with them? How competitive are you with them?
No not really. My sister did the 5K with me but she isn't into running really. Her focus is basketball. My younger sister ran the Mickey mile but only because she wanted to participate because the rest of us were.

Congrats to everyone who had a race this weekend! A lot of goals accomplished. Keep up the hard work.

QOTD: After a race in which you reached your goal v/s a race in which you did not, how much of a different person are you between the two?

My primary goals in any race are: 1. Finish, and 2. Have fun. Anything beyond that is just gravy. :) I'm pretty Type-A in my real life and put a lot of pressure on myself to do well at everything, and so running is what I do to de-stress. I've always told myself that the day I start getting down on myself or putting pressure on myself about running is the day that I quit because then it's become counter-productive.

QOTD: Are any of your family members runners as well? Do you run with them? How competitive are you with them?

I'm the only one in my family, though I've been trying to convince DH to join me on at least one rD 5K...which hasn't happened yet. My twin-in-law is a runner, but he is so much faster than me, I couldn't even begin to compete with him. :)

QOTD: After a race in which you reached your goal v/s a race in which you did not, how much of a different person are you between the two?

I'm pretty passive when it comes to running EXCEPT when I do an event by myself. Running with others I try to go at their pace and help them enjoy the experience. Running an event by myself I usually have 4 goals--
1>finish injury free
2>finish at a designated time that I can live with
3>Get a PR
4>Exceed all expectations and beat a lofty time goal that seemed unrealistic when I started

I usually finish between # 2 and # 3. Sometimes I am content and know that my training, health, weather, etc, I did what I could do. Other times I am irritable because I was running a good race and miss my goal by a minute. I easily waste that much time at water stops. That usually translates to signing up for more races and trying again. Anybody else know that feeling?!!

QOTD: Are any of your family members runners as well? Do you run with them? How competitive are you with them?

...

My wife started running about 7 years ago.
She got my daughter to do some turkey trots with her.
My daughter talked me into running to help her train for lacrosse season 4 years ago.
I got my son to run with me for an 8k. We all run together at least once a year.
Last summer I talked my Mom into doing a 5k with us.

Not competitive at all with them, just enjoy the experience.

I am the only one that consistently runs during the year but we do enjoy our "Forced Family Fun" runs.

Most my family runs...My siblings and I all ran High school cross country - My younger brother does all the same RunDisney races as me (although we don't run together), we aren't really competitive to each other as I know I can't catch him. My sister runs and I always said it's a good thing we didn't run high school cross country at the same time, there would have been fights, so we are (were) competitive with each other, haven't ran a race together in a long time, but when we did road race together growing up and I started beating her she wasn't happy since I was younger, ha! :) And then My older brother runs, did the WDW marathon with us this year (and some in years past) and I would say my brothers are competitive with each other if given the opportunity. My sister-in-law started running at some point and just finished the Princess Half (don't think she loved it like we do as she complains about running in a way that I don't quite get). Actually my brother's family including his 2 young kids are all doing Mickey's Holiday 5k with us, so that should be fun! Oh & my parents run....their first RunDisney races are coming up with Dark Side!!!! I'm sooo excited for them!!!! -- but none of us run together usually, different states for one on some and different paces, but it is nice having other get it when it comes to running.

QOTD: After a race in which you reached your goal v/s a race in which you did not, how much of a different person are you between the two?
ATTQOTD: All I kept reading about finishing a first marathon was how it would totally change your life! I hit that goal in January... still waiting for my life change... ;) So I guess my answer is no different, lol!

QOTD:
Are any of your family members runners as well? Do you run with them? How competitive are you with them?

ATTQOTD: My mother took up jogging when I was a kid and it was the cool thing to do and we ran together sometimes. She hasn't run in years though. My ex-husband was a triathlete so he ran regularly when we were together. No competitiveness in either case.

ATTQOTD: My sister is a runner, she has been on and off since high school. We run together occasionally if we are both at our parents, but we live too far apart to do it more often. We are not competitive. She is significantly younger than me, so I figure since we could never be in the same age group (assuming 5 year ranges) I figure there is no need for us to compete.

My mom runs a bit, never more than 5k. She started just a few years ago.

My daughter who just turned 8, says she wants to run, but we don't do it regularly. I am hoping that will change this summer. She has done three Disney 5ks and one kids race. The scariest moment in my life happened at that darn kids race. She was 5, and registered for the 200m I believe. She absolutely insisted on doing it alone. She did not want myself, my husband or my mom to run with her (meanwhile my 7 year old insisted on being accompanied). I decided to let her do it. I stayed with her in the holding area until they walked to the start, then I ran out the back way to the finish. I saw her finish then went to the secure area where parents get kids who run alone. I couldn't find her. I was assured she couldn't have gotten out without someone having her claim ticket, but neither my mom or I could spot her. Terrifying few minutes. Alas Miss Independent was calmly standing off to the side enjoying her medal:)

My son has no interest in running, though he really enjoyed the Avengers 5k. I was set to have him and my husband walk, and I'd run with my daughter, but we ended up all sticking together and run/walking. He sprinted ahead at the finish and was so proud of himself for beating me:) DH refuses to take up running. He is an avid cyclist, and complains about needing to cross train, but he refuses to try running.

ATTQOTD: All I kept reading about finishing a first marathon was how it would totally change your life! I hit that goal in January... still waiting for my life change... ;)

@PrincessV , but your life HAS changed. Once you complete a marathon, you will ALWAYS be a Marathoner!!

If that doesn't work, how about the signs that say "Chuck Norris NEVER ran a marathon"....so you have that going for you too. :thumbsup2

ATTQOTD: No other real runners. My wife likes to walk, and would prefer a 0.0 magnet on her car. My oldest has done a couple of 5ks, and could be fast if he put some effort into it. My youngest has no interest in running. My wife will walk Blue Bell fun run this weekend, my oldest will do the 5k (hasn't really run in two years), and I will to the 10k. Youngest will hang out at the finish line. We all will partake in the ice cream post race/walk....
