The Running Thread - 2016

QOTD: today's question is a little specific to folks who run with pushing a stroller. What type of stroller do you run with and when running do you push with one hand or two, alternating between both hands?

ATTQOTD: we have a Bob. Alternate with both hands. Two hands only for uneven terrain.

Not sure of the brand, but it's a double jogger. Whenmy boys were smaller, I could push with one hand (right), but now one is too big for it and when I do push my youngest, it's with both hands. Could never push with my left hand, even at a stage where I tried alternating hands.

After an 11 day hiatus due to a grad school class, hosting the family for Easter, work, and some weird health issues, I was back at it today!

Ran 5 miles and the first 4 were awesome! The last mile, not so much!

DH and I are running the Cap City Half in Columbus on April 30th. This year, it is also the USATF National Half Marathon Championship. (The winners will likely finish about the time I hit the 6 mile marker...)

Jealous of your Finish at the 50. I've wanted to do that for a few years now. But my family has a huge 4th celebration up by Lake Winnipesaukee every year and I might be disowned if I skipped it:) We are all huge Pats fans, so you'd think they would understand, but no unfortunately.

I have only run it once, last year. I understand the course changes often but last year's was brutal. It was a good race, don't get me wrong. But there was a lot of swearing on the course because every time we turned we went up another hill. I was sore for 2 weeks after this race. Having said that, I am excited to run the 5k with my 2 oldest kids this year followed by the 10K by myself. I didn't spend much time on the field last year because my family was waiting for me but this year I may bring my GoPro and video the race if they allow it. The whole experience was cool though from the prerace to the post race party. Not quite Disney but not far off either. But the 4th at the lake is not a bad time either I am sure.

I have not. I do the original series. My favorite workouts are Plyo, Core Synergistics, Chest & Back, and Arms & Shoulders. I also make sure to get in 2 rounds of Ab Ripper per week, usually on upper body days. P90X has reshaped my body over the years and allows me to retain muscle mass as I approach 50.

Well, off to catch my flight to WDW. Hope everyone running this weekend reaches their goals.

I like most of the workouts. I don't enjoy Yoga X all that much but I need Yoga badly to loosen up. I plan to start tomorrow but I will replace Yoga X with a Yoga video for runners I got from Runner's World last week. I haven't tried it yet but I'll use that instead. I may also mix in some X3 workouts.

ATTQOTD: My kids are long past stroller pushing days. I didn't run when they were little. :)

Ran the Bentonville half yesterday with a goal of a sub 2:30. I finished at 2:27:18. YAY!! I wasn't really confident of that due to some tendonitis in my knee over the last few weeks, but it's been steadily improving. Combine that with a course that is basically all uphill from mile 10 on (with part of that hill being ridiculously steep) and I'm pretty darn happy with that. It was an absolutely beautiful day. High 30's at start time and roughly mid to upper 40s at race finish. Ran our :90/:30 intervals with a few extra walks thrown in on that last hill. We got a short sleeve tech shirt at the expo with our bibs and then got a long sleeve tech shirt that says "I conquered the hill" on the back once we finished. All in all a really good race and we got to spend time with some really good friends who live in Bentonville. Fantastic weekend.

@LSUlakes my shamrock race time was 50:02, PR for 8k. I also somehow ran 5.29 miles weaving around from the back corral, but I will gladly take it!!!!

Great job to you both on your PR's and having strong races.

QOTD: I was busy yesterday so I couldn't answer. I had my father/daughter dance with my 3 girls. :-) I never ran with a stroller so I can't comment.

Ran North America's oldest road race yesterday, the Around the Bay 30K...122nd edition (2 years older than Boston!)

It was below freezing at the start and there was a pretty decent wind whipping up making it feel even colder. The sun was out though so that made it feel a lot better. I went with shorts and had a lot of looks, but I was happy with the decision once we got going. I was shooting for sub-2:10, and the way this race works is that if you break 2:00 you get a gold medal, under 2:15 is a silver and all of the other finishers get bronze. I figured that Gold was a bit too rich a pace for me as I didn't know exactly where my race fitness was having not done a proper road race in 11 months. A few kilometres in though I realized I was clicking along pretty good and I was closer to the 2:00 finish than 2:10 so I decided to see how long I could hold on without pushing too hard (keeping in mind I have to run Boston in 2 weeks). At the 10K turn we hit the shore of Lake Ontario and the wind with it...I found a pack of 4 or 5 guys to run with and did a good job of tucking in, but their pace was dropping just a touch so I took the lead (and the wind). I urged the other guys to tuck in behind me, but as they were 6' and I am 5'8" it wasn't much of an advantage for them. The last 10K we hit some decent rollers and that is where the race is won or lost...I've been doing serious hill training and it showed as I just ate them up and posted some of my fastest splits on the homestretch. I even managed to post a 1-minute negative split despite the wind and hills on the back half. I cruised across the finish line with a time of 1:58:32 and a sweet Gold Medal! I was 58th overall (out of over 5000 runners) and best of all I felt great afterwards and still feel good the next morning. I honestly never felt I went too hard and I am now super pumped for Boston in 2 weeks!

Congratulations! When I saw it on Garmin I about fell over. An outstanding race! A 30K at 1:58:32 would put your marathon matched time at 2:50:45 according to McMillan!!! I'm guessing your "enjoy Boston" goal has now changed to a time goal, so do you have a time in mind?

Thanks! My wife ran as well and has a bronze one to match it.

haha @roxymama this made me laugh...alas laughing at my desk is not appropriate either, so I stifled it to a chuckle ;)

Oh boy, now you're calling me out...I really don't want to adjust my goal but 3:10 could be sandbagging at this point. I REALLY want to make sure I enjoy the race and remember more than just the shoes the guy in front of me is wearing...but I'm fairly confident that my fitness has me in line for a sub-3 and it might be a disservice to the training I've been putting in to not at least give that a shot. PR is low 2:58, might give it a go if it meets the ultimate goal of enjoying the Boston experience.

ATTQOTD from yesterday: I never answered this one. But in my experience all running strollers are terrible because I was born with an absolute wiggle monster and I'm not sure she's ever sat still for more than two minutes in her life. Save for being utterly exhausted at disneyworld. She's always been a bed/crib sleeper and not much of a stroller stayer. Sigh

Congratulations! What a fun confidence booster going into Boston!

Super happy with my race today! I went out fast (for me!) and first mile was under 12:00. First time ever! Managed to keep up a pretty great pace and finished at 1:16:02, 12:03 average pace and an 8:32 PR from my last 10k in October!

Congrats @Dis5150 for a great race and PR!

Congrats @ZellyB for your Bentonville Half and exceeding your goal.

Congrats @CheapRunnerMike for a sub 2:00 30k in tough conditions. Sounds like you are primed and ready for Boston!

Good job to everyone that ran races this weekend! I sadly did not run my half this weekend :( It was raining and the trail conditions were muddy and slippery. I didn't think they were safe for me since I was untrained on trails to begin with. So I decided discretion was the route to go here and I took a pass. I have a couple 5ks and 10ks I'm planning on for the Summer and then I won't start training for another half until July or August. I'm looking forward to just running for fun for a bit :)

ATTQOTD: I tallied up 45 miles for March. Injury bug kept me off the treadmill and streets for the first half of the month. Slowly trying to build up endurance and stay injury free this time.

On the bright side, I did 9 workouts at the gym over the past 2 1/2 weeks to strengthen core and improve overall fitness.
If I add those 9 workouts with all of the workouts I have done over the past 4 years, it would add up to----- 9 !!!

Race Report from this past weekend

I did not one but TWO races this weekend.

Event # 1-Hot Chocolate 15k in Philly. Nice flat course that starts close to the Rocky steps and runs up Benjamin Franklin Parkway in front of the museums before u-turning and paralleling the river. A true out and back course. Ran with family in the rain and everybody did fine. Longest distance either of my teenagers had ever done. First 15k for my wife and I so PRs for everybody!!! Nice medal and long sleeve zip up sweatshirt.

Event # 2-April Fools Half in Atlantic City. This is the FLATTEST half course I have ever run. No rain but chilly temps (38) and feisty winds that were 30 mph steady and gusting to 50 mph made it feel colder and tougher. Now I get the April Fools part. Several times I thought I would be knocked down by the wind. Course runs 3.5 miles down the boardwalk and then through residential and commercial streets before turning around. I did not train for this event due to injuries but managed a PR by about 45 seconds.

Nice spinner medal, neon green tshirt, and plenty of food options at the finish. Sort of a party atmosphere with the finish in front of Margaritaville Café and the beach.

Best part was no injuries,

This is possibly dumb question. So not even QOTD worthy. I have a race where the weather is not going to be freezing, but not warm either. I already know I'm going longer capri's on my lower half because full pants will be too warm. But I have a conundrum for my upper half. Let's say I want to wear a long sleeve pullover and then take it off mid-race if I get warm. What do I do about my number pinned to my front?
Is the simplest answer to buy those sleeve arm things tonight at the race expo and wear them with short sleeve shirt?
Or is the simpler answer to just wear the short sleeve and bring a throwaway sweatshirt and just run in the short sleeves off the bat?
I've become a master at removing a long sleeve layer from underneath a short sleeve shirt, bib pinned to short sleeve.

QOTD: today's question is a little specific to folks who run with pushing a stroller. What type of stroller do you run with and when running do you push with one hand or two, alternating between both hands?

ATTQOTD: My :baby" is about to be 14, so it's been a looong time. ;) Back then, jogging strollers were just becoming available to the masses and I had some cheap one from Target. Approximate turning radius of a Hummer: no sharp turns! I never ran more than a couple miles at a time, but I'm short and the handle height wasn't adjustable - I had to keep alternating hands to avoid killing my neck and shoulders. Okay, and I may have occasionally given it a good push and gone hand-less, too. But I always had the safety strap attached to my wrist! ;)

Congrats to everyone who had a race this weekend! A lot of goals accomplished. Keep up the hard work.

QOTD: After a race in which you reached your goal v/s a race in which you did not, how much of a different person are you between the two?

ATTQOTD: If its a goal race that I have properly trained for and all of the starts aligned and I just failed to hit the goal, I don't take it well. Major goal hit... Time to hit up facebook. lol

QOTD: After a race in which you reached your goal v/s a race in which you did not, how much of a different person are you between the two?

ATTQOTD: I don't really think I'm that much different. That's probably because my time goals are always secondary to Goal #1: Finish. As long as I have achieved Goal #1 (which, fortunately, I have never failed) I can usually overcome any disappointment about failing to meet my other goals. I tend to be pretty laid-back and maybe my standards are too low, but finishing still means a lot to me regardless of the distance.
