The Running Thread - 2016

Yeah, I ran in HS in the early 80's, so... o_O

I did a little track a decade earlier. Was mostly a swimmer. Back then i could easily swim a half marathon or marathon with all the training from back then. Not taking Geritol yet :lmao:

QOTD: Easter weekend is upon us. I realize there are a number of things that make this event very different for different people. So my question is, what do you do for Easter weekend?

We're in Bermuda for our wedding anniversary. It's supposed to be raining all weekend, so we'll probably end up sitting on the patio drinking Dark & Stormys.

I'll admit to starting 1 a day vitamins this year. So far it hasn't helped. I am still getting older.

ATTQOTD: No special Easter plans. Lapsed Catholic, SO is not religious, and my family is far away (his family is here but they aren't religious either and we see them multiple times a week already :)). I will probably go over to the animal shelter to get a volunteer hour in. We started volunteering there walking dogs after our dog passed in December, but we got a new dog a month ago and it's been hard to find as much time to go over and walk the shelter dogs now that we have a puppy. I would have gone to yoga, too, but it looks like the Sunday 4pm class is cancelled this week. :(

No, this would be my first full. I lived in DC, MD and VA for 10 years and loved the area. I always figured if I ever did a full it would be there or WDW. Have other plans for Disney in 2017, so decided to go for this one first. Fingers crossed!

I haven't done a full yet but I kind of think that if I decide to do one, my first will either be MCM or Disney :) I'm planning to be down there cheering the runners on!

I think either is a great choice for a first marathon. I haven't done MCM yet but I have heard great things about it. It is on my list of must-do's for sure. It's a big one though. I think there were 40,000 runners last year. Makes Disney look small.

Happy Anniversary!!!

QOTD: We go to my "in-laws" for the day after the kids do their search around the house in the morning. This year I will probably do a run at night, at least that is the plan as of right now.

I've been lucky enough to do both and can confirm that they are excellent marathon events. MCM might be my favorite marathon, but Disney is not far behind.

Hoping to get 10 miles in as I'm 15 miles shy for my month goal.. Then I'm meeting my husband at the contemporary to see his team's (contemp bakery) Easter eggs (they debuted them a day after my days off so haven't seen them in person yet) and get the Easter cupcake- no idea outside of that.. It's weird to have a holiday off so yeah..

Every Easter Sunday we go to my grandmas house and she makes an early dinner with ham and all sorts of stuff. We just hang out and have fun there. We used to do Easter egg hunts but we are all too old for that now. Here in Wisconsin fish fries are the big deal. We went out for an all you can eat one yesterday. Today we aren't doing anything special.

ATTQOTD: Being a Catholic in the south, it's a big event. Today is Good Friday and family gathering takes place after mass. Crawfish boil is usually the plan. Not much on Saturday, but the Crescent City Classic 10k is always the Saturday before Easter, so we head to NOLA for the race. Sunday is church, egg hunts, and candy for the kiddos. It's usually very nice weather and this year is no exception. So in short we spend a lot of time outdoors with family and friends.

I'm a religious person (but not too religious, if that makes sense). My in-laws and my family are getting together Saturday to gave a big dinner and egg hunt. Sunday we will do baskets and what not. The thing is, I've always disliked Easter for how commercialized it's become. I hate how it's all about Easter bunny (which I think is creepy!), egg hunts, candy, etc. Easter is supposed to be about Christ. But I'm not going to hate on people for enjoying stuff like the Easter bunny, I truly hope everyone has a great holiday no matter how people spend it. I said I'm not too religious. ;)

I have a running question for the experienced endurance runners that are oh so wise here: has anyone ever gone back to the beginning with a program such as couch to 5k with the intent of improving speed or form? After my half in April I'm thinking I'd like to focus on speed in shorter distances for a while, especially with the heat of the AZ summer rapidly approaching, making long runs much harder. Thanks for any advice!

Not all the way back, but I do cut back my mileage when I need to focus on speed. I have found that I cannot improve both my speed and endurance at the same time. I could when I was younger, but those days are long gone.

Thats my goal since ill be race less from june- oct and need something to focus on in the florida heat.. I just hit even run/walk ratios (1:1) but want to take it to 1:30/1 then 2:1

ATTQOTD about Easter-- I am an elder at our church so I will be there bright and early Sunday morning for all the festivities.
Family will be attending and then we will meet my parents for Easter "brunch."

Typically our kids are on Spring Break and we would take them to the beach or Florida to see my wife's parents. No can do this year since I have jury duty.
But we are getting away NEXT weekend for some Philly fun.

We just finished dying eggs with the kids and tomorrow the bunny will come to leave baskets. Then we will have dinner at the in-laws.

I was wondering if anyone has been to the St. Michael's Running Festival in MD? I will be in Delaware for my brother's wedding that weekend (about an hour away) and I was wondering if it is worth checking out?

I'd say whether to go back to a couch to 5K plan should be based on your running history. The more halfs you've done in the past you might not want to go all the way to the beginning. There are other options for a 5K training plan (like Hal Higdon) for someone who has done a few halfs in the past. The absolute key to speed work is that you want to make sure your running form doesn't suffer. So if toward the end of the speed session you start to get really fatigued and your form falls apart it's a sign you likely need more rest in between intervals.

I will also be attempting to work on speed in Spring 2017. At this early planning juncture, I'm thinking of doing Jack Daniels 60-70 mile per week plan (pg 185 of his book). My reasoning is that my estimated race times are nearly completely equal across all distances from 5K through marathon, so to reach my ultimate goal I need to get faster. It appears the main difference between say a half or marathon training plan and a 5K or 10K plan is that speed intervals are on Tuesdays (near mile pace) and threshold runs (which are about 15 seconds faster than half pace) appear most often on Fridays. Sundays are still Long Runs (limited to 25% of weekly mileage or 120 minutes whichever occurs first). Every other day is easy (about 60-120 second slower than half pace). But I'm also open to advice if any one has any input, I've also never done a training plan like this.

@DopeyBadger.....that's a great tip about maintaining good form when you increase speed.

I'm not familiar with J. Daniels plans.....how many weeks is the marathon plan and do they all top out at 2 hours for the long run?

The Daniels plan in Spring 2017 I would use is a 60-70 mile per week 5K/10K training plan (Tuesdays near mile, Fridays at HM - 15 sec, and Sunday @ 120 minutes). All of the Sunday runs, with a few exceptions, are at 120 minutes or 25% total mileage. There are a few Sundays of marathon tempo training up to 10 miles, but nothing ever longer than 120 minutes based on my paces.

Right now, I'm following a modified Hansons Advanced marathon plan which I made into a 15 week plan (you can see it here: http://www.disboards.com/threads/to...adger-comments-welcome.3475601/#post-55004772). It tops out at 17 miles (or 144 minutes).

The Jack Daniels marathon plan (which I've never used) in the book can be as long as 26 weeks. The long run builds up to a maximum of 2.5 hours, or a set distance if you're super quick. Daniels, like Hansons, is a big proponent of not exceeding 2.5 hours in a single training run unless you are using a run/walk method.
