The Running Thread - 2016

Question to all the runners on here! When you first started out, how frequently did you run?

I literally JUST started my new running program (go me!) this week. I ran on Wed and was planning on going out again today, but my legs are still SO SORE. Does that mean I ran too much? Unfortunately, with my schedule I only have certain days I have any time for a run. Should I wait until my next free day (Sunday?) or try to tough it out today?

Thanks everyone, I'm a super newbie!

Congrats on becoming a new runner. Hopefully you will enjoy the journey and keep at it for a long time.

I didn't start running until my mid 40s. When I first started out, my wife was already an experienced runner and had helpful advice. I ran 2 or 3 times most weeks and that was great. Never had an issue. Then I ramped up to 5 times a week for a while but that was more than my body liked. I quickly got injured. I got impatient and tried too much too soon.

I'm not an expert on running advice, but soreness can be typical when you are starting out or overdoing it. Might want to give yourself a day off between runs in the early stages. It's okay to push sometimes but better to "ease" into it and get acclimated to running than to overdo it and get injured, burnt out, or be unable to run.

Lots of great advice on this forum.
Stay safe and have fun.
Looking forward to hearing about your progress.

That sounds amazing, congrats @CheapRunnerMike. Is this your first Boston or have you done many?
Be safe and have a great run next month.

Looking at the Boston qualifier times, I think when I age 10.5 more years, I can reach the estimated pace to qualify.
Hope to join you one day!
Thanks @Slogger, hope you can do it one day too! It will be my first time, never been to Boston period let alone the marathon. Just going to enjoy the experience and take it all in...if I'm ever fortunate to make it back again I can race it then, but can't take this opportunity for granted :)

Good luck to the following with your upcoming race this weekend! As usual, if you would like to change your goal let me know. Hope everyone has a good race!

Thanks! I'm looking forward to my 7K tomorrow! But I'm just approaching it for fun with no real goal time, since I was sick last week and have only run twice in the last 2 weeks.

Some interesting stats about the fastest races to sell out this year. :) I am running in #4, the Covered Bridges Half Marathon!

Wow, those are all so fast! Interesting that RunDisney wouldn't disclose their sellout times.

Yeah looks like it might not start until after we are done. Hoping so anyways. I've never run in snow really so wouldn't know what to do except slow down.

You can't help but slow down in the snow. I ran in the snow this year, I refused to go inside on the treadmill. You can't get traction in the snow so it automatically slows you down. BUT, running in the snow is so awesome. It is so peaceful. It sounds like you will miss the snow but if you don't enjoy it. It's a nice experience. Accept you won't set a PR and enjoy.

I am late to the game as you have already gotten back from your run but I wanted to chime in anyway. I ran 3 days a week. You will be sore initially. It depends a little on your age of course but for me, at age 40, my tendons and ligaments were sore for weeks after the muscles adjusted. And it was worth every second of discomfort to get where I am now!!! So, welcome to the thread and welcome to the running community. It's an awesome group of people.

Covered Bridges is in NH, right?

You are going to have an awesome time. I am jealous. But, if I can help you with your planning in anyway send me a PM and I will do my best. Boston can be confusing so I am hear if you need me.

Thanks! Everyone seems great; I'm a bit embarrassed to talk about running with my "runner friends" so it's nice to have a spot on the internet to turn to :)

No, this one is in VT, but it's confusing because there is another one like a week later that is called NH-VT Covered Bridge Half Marathon that as the name might suggest starts in NH and ends in VT, and I think a second one in NH called Swanzey Covered Bridges Half Marathon. :) I guess covered bridges are kind of our thing up here?! :)

This one starts north of Woodstock and ends in Quechee Gorge. It will be weird to go back up there... I went to college up near there at Dartmouth. I haven't been back up in a long time though, almost 20 years, even though I only live about 2 hours from there.

Why are you embarrassed?

Yes, there are a lot of covered bridges up there. All those races confuse me. There are so many races I want to do this year. I really need to narrow it down and make my choices. This one sounds good but it seems like a long ride.

You went to Dartmouth. You must be wicked smaht!!! (Boston accent for those who think I can't spell.:D)

Good luck to everyone running a race this weekend. Be safe, injury free, and have fun!!!

Wow. Those are some fast signup times. I thought we had it rough with RunDisney signups.

I missed #1, the Beach to Beacon 10k in Maine. I knew it sold out fast, but not that fast. I have entered the lottery for the remaining spots. They do a certain number first come first serve (that's the under 4 minutes) and then there is a lottery. I should find out next week.

ATTQOTD: I run 3-4 times a week. Every time I try to increase to 5 or more I end up injured. So I cross train 2 days a week.

Good luck to all of you racing this weekend!

I finally got in to Beach to Beacon. It's my hometown race, and I've wanted to run it for years but never had the chance until now. Hope you make it in too.

Wow John, that organization sounded pretty brutal :(

Glad the race itself went well...missing your goal by as little as you did in tough conditions is pretty solid. I like the idea of using the autopause on the bike computer, I'll probably give that a try. Just like you I do my "official" tracking on my 920, but use a computer for info during the ride.

I was surprised at how well that worked. I got the idea from Quarq. I bought one of their power meters recently, and they have a great page on how they recommend setting them up with Garmin bike computers. I'll definitely use that method again at Galveston next month.

I watched the pro races online and the announcer mentioned during the women's race that the bike into T2 looked dangerous and was an accident waiting to happen...sure enough there was a big crash seconds later and an Olympic medal hopeful broke her wrist. That's on the organizers.

That a race in the friggin' Middle East runs out of water is beyond crazy.

I saw that too. Very sad and very preventable. With the new drafting rules, they should've known something like that could and would happen. And yeah, the water thing kind of beggars belief, no? The one other thing they did, which made me very glad I chose the Oly and not the maxi distance, is screw up the start and cutoff times. They told everyone the start would be at 615am for the maxi and that people would have 6 hours in which to finish the course. Had they looked at a weather site, they would've known that sunrise was after 630 and starting in the dark was not advisable. They moved the start time back 15-20 minutes until it was light out but never changed the course closure at 1215pm. More than a few people got pulled off the course even though they were on pace to finish under 6 hours. That's pretty awful, too.

Hi! DH and I are just getting back into running. Back in 2011 we worked up to the ability to run 5k although we never did an actual race. Then I broke a toe, got out of practice, got lazy, gained 20 lbs... :) So, a few weeks ago I got back on the treadmill. Right now a 5k takes me 45 minutes of running/walking. I'm hoping to be back in shape before Oct. so I can run the Castaway Cay 5k on our next cruise. As motivation DH and I just splurged on Mickey and Minnie RunDisney shoes off eBay. ;)

Doesn't it have a larger field too? I will do this one soon.

3,600 for the half (& 3,600 for the full) so decent sized.. As one who ran before and will run after their 5 year challenge im intrigued to see what happens after next year (final challenge year)

Their sister race excalibur jumped high this year- from 800ish finishers to 2,500 registered for its new 4 year challenge.. So yeah for them..
