The Running Thread - 2016

This morning turned out to be a beautiful running day for NYC Half. Mid to high 30s sun and cloud. All that worry about snow for nothing. Lol. I had a great race. I finished and enjoyed the route tremendously. Running through TIme Square is awesome. NYRR does a great job with entertainment and the finish line goodie bag

Congrats on your finish. It was a fun race with a great course. That little hill and the wind coming out of the tunnel at mile 13 was like running into a wall though. Knocked me off a PR but still a great race. Will be back for this one. Now if I can get home tomorrow with no delays.

Rock and Roll Dallas did not go as I had hoped. Temp was about perfect (39 at the start), but the wind was brutal! 20-30 pretty much constant the whole way. The only time I did not feel like we were running into a headwind, was going south, and that is were the hills were. The constants winds took a lot out of me. Finished in with a 1:39:52 which was about 2 minutes above my goal for the race.

4th time in 5 years I have run the race, and I will most likely do it again. I like the challenge the hills that Dallas area provides compared to the flats of most races in the Houston area.

Excalibur finish: 2:17:55 which mean sub 14:00 miles 13:47 to be exact.. Very content esp as not only had my first 12:xx mile in years- 2 miles were on sand that was not as hard packed as expected (thank you rainstorms!) and it was 70 degrees and humid..

Awesome job! That sand road was more difficult than anticipated! I missed my goal by 2 minutes, but given the conditions and a medical thing I had, I'll take it! And the bling was pretty sweet - dragon!! :)

Lesson learned about running with a cold or flu. I was hoping to not have to take any meds the day before but that disappeared around 8pm and 2am. I really ended up just taking it easy. Finish time was 2:31:20. Way off of the goal but had fun. One of my running friends had the flu hit really bad and stayed home. She has been suffering thru it for 2 weeks and still going.

I thought the event was run very well from my perspective. It tripled in size from last year. Parking was no problem even getting there at 6:25. Any questions I had asked or saw others ask were answered correctly and very friendly. I was glad to see the cloud cover and lack of rain. The 2 mile sand road would have been a mess if we had to run it in the rain. I also like the road for the crown effect since I like to run on the outsides and switch from side to side.

All of the volunteers on were great. Felt bad for those out on the sand road. The big question is will I run this one again next year? Yes I will!

Sorry to hear you just missed your goal time. Still a solid time for you given the weather situation. Congrats! Was this your best time at this particular race?

This was the 3rd different course over the 4 times I have run there, and last year I had a 1:38:59. I think last years course was probably a little tougher (more hills late in the race) than this years. Overall, I placed 382 out of 9538.

I do find it entertaining the R&R folks have the Dallas Cowboy cheerleaders dancing near the finishing line when the race is about 65% women.

QOTD: Have you ever run a race and the course turns out to be short?

ATTQOTD: Yes. I have now been a part of two races that are short. This weekends 5k was 2.83 miles. Glad I did not have high hopes for the race.

I have a lot of catching up to do and will try to update the OP ASAP.

ATTQOTD: I have done a 5k that was about .1 short a couple of years ago (my only "offical" 5k). Also have done a 10 mile race that was about .34 too long. That was fun

All of the runs have been the Garmin was just slightly over the stated distance. Obviously not running the shortest possible line. One 5k my Garmin was spot on match. Nothing measuring short. Only part of 1 race shortened event which was W&D 2015.

Congrats the weekend races and I have severe dragon medal envy now!

@LSUlakes please remove the March4Meg race on 3/26 off my list. My hubby is running it but I'll be with my daughter cheering on the sidelines since we are out a babysitter (she is saying heck no to me pushing her in a stroller.) I will do the kid race with her if she is game though :)
I will be running my standard long run later than day for training, but no racing. I think that's better anyways for my training plan.

Actually I think that would be very motivating for me. Keep running and I'll look like them, right :)

ATTQOTD: I have never ran a short course thankfully. Although my body would be like "yay the finish line!", my brain would be disappointed. I've made courses long by my own doing (Hello, Disney.) And I've for sure run one course that was longer than the normal little bit that courses tend to be long (everyone was hub-bubbing about it so I know it wasn't just me.) Un-luckily I may have PR'd that course by a little bit if it was the correct distance, but I've moved on since I PR'd eventually after that.

Will do. Sorry you are not going to be able to run the race this year.

QOTD... I've done 2 5ks that came up as short on my Garmin and given the organization of those particular races, I would believe it.

So what happens with the race results? Does it list your time as a full 5k or does it list the results as your time for 2.83 short course?

This week has been, in my eyes, an AWESOME start to my new running life! I went out 3x and am feeling proud of myself. Weirdly, each time I finished a run and had an off day, I found myself actually looking forward to the next one. Disney goals really help....

This is monumental for me because I typically hate exercise. Here's to hoping/ensuring I keep it up this week!

It goes down as a 5k, but on I do not accept it as such on sites that compile your race results. I am ok with a 5k being off +/- .05 mils or a bit more on the over is actually expected, but a quarter mile off for a 5k is huge.

Another interesting thing about the day was it is supposed to be a health awareness thing put on by companies around town. Of course a fellow employee runs the race and heads over to our companies tent after the race to her bag. Grabs a smoke and lights up. I thought, ah that's perfect.

QOTD: Have you ever run a race and the course turns out to be short?
No, thankfully I haven't. I imagine I would be pretty frustrated if I had trained for that distance and was excited to see my time, etc.

I too need to change my upcoming races @LSUlakes. I had to back out of the Earth Day 10K on April 22 because we will be taking a trip to Vegas to visit family that weekend. I transferred my race entry fee to a glow run 10K on 7/15/16. It will be my first night time race, so I'm excited about that!

Also, I have a general question for you runners. What motivation do you give yourself when you are having a hard time getting out the door on a particular day? Most days, I just plan my exercise and do it. But sometimes, I need an extra little push just to get me out of the door. I'm always so happy that I've made myself get out there and by mile 1, I'm usually feeling great. But, I would love some more tips and extra motivation!

Yes and no, there was a 5k "fun run" or 1 mile walk in my town. The issue came when they determined they didn't want to close all that many streets and so the walk ended up being 1.55 miles while the run was supposed to be that course twice. Of course almost everyone in town decided 1.55 miles was totally the length of a 5k and decided to stop. So my friend and I ended up being one of 5 or 6 people who actually did the 5k. It wasn't a big deal because of the conditions but it was odd.
