The Running Thread - 2016

@LSUlakes Can you please update my events on page 1 to include the Abu Dhabi ITU triathlon on March 5th? Thanks!

Say hi to Javy for me!

Attqod: 171 miles. It was a little lower than I would have hoped. I had a bunch of stuff going on at work that caused me to miss a handful of runs.

I'm trying to do a modified Hanson's plan. I'm not sure if I'm running too fast during strength workouts but I am falling apart during my tempos
When I trained with Hansons I was feeling pretty burnt out by the end of the cycle and the taper was most welcome. You will feel pretty trashed at times with that plan but it is by design, so don't get too discouraged.

I was just over 42 hours total for January, which looking back is my highest volume month ever...nice start to Ironman training! My official training plan with my coach started on Feb 1, first time working with someone...looking forward to it :)

Which one are you doing? I think you'll enjoy working with a coach. I love mine.

QOTD: When not training for a particular race, how far is your long run for the week?

ATTQOTD: My long runs will range anywhere from 10 to 15 miles during the offseason. It's just to hot to go for more than 15 mid summer and the extra mileage isn't that necessary I find.

Figured to share a moment from yesterday.. I try to get out to Kennedy space center every year during 'remembrance week' for Apollo 1, challenger, and Columbia. This year my visit was 2 days after the laying of the flowers which added a bit more somber view.

As part of my photo project with my space coast half marathon medals for the 'Big Bang challenge' and goal of having a pic of each medal with its shuttle had to pause with the medals of the 2 lost shuttles at the memorial space mirror...View attachment 148867

Thanks for sharing!

Thanks. I got into the running clinic today and the good news is it's an easy-to-fix problem. The doctor basically said my hips are weak which is causing my femur to turn in as I get fatigued, putting stress on the muscles on the outside back of my leg near the knee. So all of the pain is muscle-related, no bone or connecting tissue problems. I can't run until at least February 11 when I see a PT, but I'm just glad to know what's wrong and have a plan to fix it. The doctor even said I'm likely to be faster once I strengthen my hips to fix my form because the energy that now is going into the turning motion of my leg will instead be used to propel me forward. I'll be happy just to run pain-free regardless of pace though!

ATTQOTD: 55.57 miles run and 10.07 miles bike for me in January. About half what I was hoping for before the injury issues, but I'm fine with it. I hope to get back up around 100 miles/month in March or April depending on how PT goes.

Glad you got good news. Looks like strength training will be added to your weekly plans now. Amazing how any little weakness can cause so much discomfort for running.

Got a rare midweek morning run in today. 4 mile with the first (Still half asleep) @ 8:15 and the last @ 7:20 for an overall average of 7:41. The plan is to get another 7 easy TM miles in this evening.

QOTD: When not training for a particular race, how far is your long run for the week?

The longest races I've done are half marathons, so my longest when not training is only 6-8 miles. However I am working toward my first full in the fall and trying to decide what to do post GSC before I start training for the full. Not sure if I should keep my long run longer, or work first on making my short mid-week runs a bit longer. That would give me a higher mileage base when I get started on full training in the late spring or summer. I have not picked a full training plan yet. Leaning toward Higdon since thats what I've always done for my halfs.

Mont Tremblant, a little ski town just north of Montreal...not sure what I was thinking when the name of the place has "Mountain" in it. Oh right, it was the lure of paying for everything in Canadian dollars :)

QOTD: When not training for a particular race, how far is your long run for the week?

I'll usually go 15-20K if I don't have anything on the schedule, which is about 10-12 miles. I consider anything over an hour to be long for me.

QOTD: When not training for a particular race, how far is your long run for the week?

The longest race I've done is a half marathon as well. So when I'm not training for anything, my long runs tend to be around 5-7 miles.

ATTQOTD: I like the 10 to 15 mile range for longer runs. Sunday long runs are my favorite because I can ease back and run at a comfortable pace while finding routes that allow me to get out and explore a little.

ATTQOTD:
I'm not sure I have had much time not training for a race. I made sure to have at least one race every month last year as a way to keep myself motivated. Things are going to be a bit more spread out this year. Currently my "training coach" is @DopeyBadger and I have all my Long Runs planned out through early April. I'll probably go into training for another longer distance right after that. So it may not be until sometime in May/June that I'm not on a training plan for a while. So I guess my answer is TBD?

ATTQOTD X 2= Taking it easy this Winter.....doing 2 or 3 workouts weekly to strengthen core , hips and back. Anybody got any good suggestions for good exercises? Probably headed for PT.

55.6 miles for January

Not following any training plan at moment but usually try to get in a 10 mile long run each week.

This is me also - TBD. Since I'm a relatively new distance runner, there has not been much time in between races the past year, but I would guess 8-10 miles.

Anyone here use www.athlinks.com ? Stumbled upon it a few months ago and was impressed with the amount of information it gathers about races you have done.

As in for cardio or lifting weights exercise?

ATTQOTD: Usually 10-15 miles for the long run.

@LSUlakes, my goal is now 1:45. I am going to help a club member get her PR for the half

Made the change. Good luck to both of yall!

I've just started so I haven't had a period where I wasn't training. If I had to guess it would be 6-8 miles as well because that's about my limit before I have to go home and interrupt my run to refuel.

It's a combination of bench press, curls, dumbbells, and core exercises (planks, squats, leg lifts, etc)
Nothing too extreme.....these have been very neglected areas.
