The Running Thread - 2016

ATTQOTD: 86.5 miles for January - I took a whole week off after the marathon.

I've had a few nagging pains return this week, ones that were bothering me before the marathon then got better during the taper. It's nothing that really bothers me much during a run, but more afterwards, so I'm going to take it easy for my half this weekend. I'm a little concerned about the conditions for the race. It's in a park on paved and gravel trails and this race is usually in the snow, but el nino has brought us some unusual winter weather and the rain this weekend melted most of the snow, so the trails could be a combo of ice and mud. I'm hoping the colder weather later this week will bring a couple of inched of snow for better traction.

I plan to win the whole thing, obviously.

(No, I do not plan to win. I plan to just finish since I've barely done any running since Dopey wrapped up. Ooops.)

I always plan for the entire field ahead of me to make a wrong turn, and although I will yell at them to go the right way (because sportsmanship) they will not hear me over their music, and I'll just have to suck it up and get the first place trophy.
But it never goes as planned.

91.73 for me. Kind of sad that over half of that total was mileage from Dopey, but with taper before and a vacation afterward it was always in the plan.

This reads a little differently than I intended. Sorry if it was too flippant. Five years ago if someone asked me if I would run more than 91 miles during the rest of my life I would have laughed and quickly answered "no"; I'm very glad that's no longer the case.

I did actually encounter a person missing the turn once. I yelled and yelled as loud as I could as she continued on the road missing the turn (music). I decided to sprint up to her and get her back on course. You know how she repayed me. She sprinted past me, and then blocked me from making any passes on her for the next mile. Every time I tried to pass her she would shade over and block my path off. Found out after the run she was a high school cross country runner at the half marathon with her team and her coach had taught them to use those tactics (blocking). She never did thank me.

157 miles in January.

Nice 5k at the Speedway this past weekend with DS, easy pace and got him a PR. The half w/ Disneyland_emily from the Speedway to beach and back is looking good for weather, mid 50s.

That sounds rather unsportsmanlike :( I can understand why their coach would teach them the blocking but saying thanks would at least have been a nice gesture.

Good luck to everyone that has races this week and congrats to @DOOM1001 on the PR!

As far as the QOTD that I missed, I don't rotate shoes. I've got one pair I use until 300 miles or so and then switch out for the same model, Saucony Guides. GPS misadventures... I forgot to charge my Garmin 220 before my first half marathon and it died around mile 12 or so. Also, I turned it on without thinking when I was running on a cruise ship track and had some great times! Obviously it was measuring the ships movement (it was a sea day) as well as my running but I just didn't think about it until afterward.

I haven't figured out my January mileage yet, I need to go do that. I think it's around 50 or so.

My weather forecast has shifted to be 35 degrees high for my race day instead of 27. We may not have to deal with any snow on the ground at all! My race is at 9am Central so any good thoughts people want to throw out into the universe Sat. are appreciated.
I have not run a full race pace race in a few months. Disney was so not my race pace. But my speed workouts weekly have gone well.
I have literally no idea how this one is gonna go. I'm hopeful I can stick to my plan of 9:13 or lower for the full 3.1. I've read there is one big hill but you get to go down it and go up it. I'm gonna will myself not to give into walking up it. Run it to get it over with.

If you don't mind, I'll put you down for sub 30 for the race? You got it! Hope the weather continues to trend favorable for you.

EDIT- I noticed you already had a goal of 28:30 which is roughly you goal pace of 9:13. Ill keep it the same.

Podium finish it is for @Keels ! I have a couple 2nd & 3rd place medals from a series of summer 2 mile races in my age group. Some of those are because they only had 2-3 people in my age group. lol. I did win second place once in a small 5k overall. Less than 100 people.... So.. you know there's a chance.

@LSUlakes Can you please update my events on page 1 to include the Abu Dhabi ITU triathlon on March 5th? Thanks!

You got it and good luck!

Nice mileage and weather looks good for your race. Good luck!

Attqod: 171 miles. It was a little lower than I would have hoped. I had a bunch of stuff going on at work that caused me to miss a handful of runs.

I'm trying to do a modified Hanson's plan. I'm not sure if I'm running too fast during strength workouts but I am falling apart during my tempos

QOTD: What is your total mileage for January?

ATTQOTD: 110.91 miles. Not the greatest, but with only one run the week after the Disney marathon I'll take it.

200 miles, including two run just past 9PM on 1/31 to make sure I hit that 200 mile mark! It would've been more, but we got slammed by that big East Coast storm, so I was unable to get out of the house to go to the gym for a few days, and was restricted to the treadmill after that. The treadmill is a necessary evil, but it's VERY hard to do more than 6-8 miles on that thing without flirting with insanity (at least for me). Kudos to anyone who can stand to run longer on the dreadmill!

QOTD: What is your total mileage for January?

I had a rough month. Last full month before GSC, should have been over 80 miles, but illness, injury and visiting my dad in the hospital all impacted my schedule. Ended up with 62 miles according to Garmin.

Figured to share a moment from yesterday.. I try to get out to Kennedy space center every year during 'remembrance week' for Apollo 1, challenger, and Columbia. This year my visit was 2 days after the laying of the flowers which added a bit more somber view.

As part of my photo project with my space coast half marathon medals for the 'Big Bang challenge' and goal of having a pic of each medal with its shuttle had to pause with the medals of the 2 lost shuttles at the memorial space mirror...image.jpeg

Hope you are able to find out what the issue is soon and it's only minor. I have a road bike but rarely use it during the shorter days. The main reason I bought it was to keep training if I have a running injury.

Thanks. I got into the running clinic today and the good news is it's an easy-to-fix problem. The doctor basically said my hips are weak which is causing my femur to turn in as I get fatigued, putting stress on the muscles on the outside back of my leg near the knee. So all of the pain is muscle-related, no bone or connecting tissue problems. I can't run until at least February 11 when I see a PT, but I'm just glad to know what's wrong and have a plan to fix it. The doctor even said I'm likely to be faster once I strengthen my hips to fix my form because the energy that now is going into the turning motion of my leg will instead be used to propel me forward. I'll be happy just to run pain-free regardless of pace though!

ATTQOTD: 55.57 miles run and 10.07 miles bike for me in January. About half what I was hoping for before the injury issues, but I'm fine with it. I hope to get back up around 100 miles/month in March or April depending on how PT goes.

Great race overall, near perfect running weather with a great running atmosphere from both runners, spectators and residents. Not a huge race but a good size for the location. As far as my race I finished at 2:10 and change getting a PR by 22 seconds. The most positive thing about that was that that time included a 7-8 minute potty break at mile 9,so my time would probably have been closer to 2:02 or so.Even more positive that potty break included what was probably the nicest bathroom on the course as I came upon what looked like a nice looking neighborhood clubhouse and even though I knew I wanted to keep going as I knew I was on pace to PR I chose to finish the race comfortably and afterwards I felt so much better I ran better than I would have otherwise,so it helped overall. The most insane thing that happened was that I experienced my first ever case of bloody nips (on only one) just a couple of days after that subject was brought up on the boards talking about bodyglide and I said I had never had that happen before,LOL!!!The after party was also pretty good, right after the race we got the usual muffins, fruits, bagels, coke cans, more Cliff bloks(that we also got on the course). Then after we got these items you walked over to a tent where they gave you a card with like 10 different local restaurant logos that you would then take to each individual restaurant tent to get a food sample from each restaurant, some things were better than others, the good, rice and beans with Cuban bread,2 glasses of beer,a mimosa, chips and salsa and some sort of crab soup. The not so good, cold pizza, cold plain garlic rolls and some sort of grits with a bacon jelly. The race also gave out beach towels and paper ponchos with the race logo to keep warm after the race.I would never run the full in this race as I would never want to run the same loop twice but I'll definitely be back for the half.

Congrats on the PR! Looks like you will be knocking on the sub 2-hour door real soon!

Good morning folks! Ended the month with a 10.5 mile run while pushing DD in her stroller. Averaged somewhere north of a 8:30 pace. The day before we ran 3 miles around our neighborhood with a sub 8:00 minute pace. Not to bad with having to push a stroller around.

QOTD: What is your total mileage for January?

I ended up with 129 miles. Happy with that given recovery time after Dopey and a family vacation towards the end of the month that cut down my run days.

My plan to eventually win a race for my age group is to keep running until I'm 90+ and hope I outlive any other runners in the area.

I hear that! But watch out, this past summer I ran in a trail half marathon and saw a 70+ male runner finish in under 2:10. With runners of that age and that fast... Outliving is likely the best option!!:)

Just had to say, 200 miles is awesome! Wow!

QOTD: What is your total mileage for January?
Swim - 12 miles
Bike - 250 miles
Run - 143 miles

I was just over 42 hours total for January, which looking back is my highest volume month ever...nice start to Ironman training! My official training plan with my coach started on Feb 1, first time working with someone...looking forward to it :)
