The Running Thread - 2016

QOTD: What is your longest midweek training run you have ever done that did not count as your long run?

I think about 8 miles, during training for a few races I like to mix in a little longer distance mid week once in a while so I don't get caught in a rut. It also makes for a more interesting route as I get bored easily and need my mind to sometimes be distracted.

Thus far, my longest weekday run has been 7 miles. It has taken place on the treadmill each time because it is when my youngest ones nap but at least there is Netflix!

In terms of candy, I have had a little bit...from each kids bucket! My kids don't seem to be big fans of candy (I know, they are weird) so I think I am going to try and donate it so isn't sitting there on the counter just asking to be eaten by me.

10 miles is my longest to date, though in a few weeks it should climb to 12.

Question for fun: How much of you kids candy have you eaten since trick or treat?

None stolen here. My wife and I frown upon the practice of parents taking an infant trick or treating to get candy for themselves. It's not like my 5 month old would eat any of that candy.

I've been sneakily throwing away pieces every night when my kid is asleep to "thin the herd"...is that evil?

Yes, throwing away candy is always evil, with a few exceptions of candy that just isn't good.

ATTQOTD: 6 miles is the longest I've ever run that wasn't my long run for the week (however, my long run is usually mid-week, as I've discovered Thursday is my favorite day for a LR).

I have definitely had my fair share of candy this past week. I feel like my kids have had more "candy opportunities" than usual between church parties, school parties, friends parties, and then trick-or-treating. I'm ready to be done with the candy onslaught! That said, I'm not going to turn down a fun size butterfinger if one of my kids offer ;)

ATTQOTD: I think 6 miles? And it was on the Treadmill. I have no tv in that room, so I either watched Netflix on my tablet or listened to a podcast. I have come to hate the treadmill, not looking forward to winter runs on it when I can't get outside.

We live in the country and do not get trick or treaters. And no kids at home anymore but my mother does live with us and she thinks it is her job to keep a candy dish or 2 filled with chocolate at all times. But I am proud to say that the only sugar I have had in a month is my weekly 3 donut holes while DH is eating his donuts at our pre-church donut shop visit every Sunday. I will have my peanut butter M&M's during my 20 mile run this Saturday though. I'm pretty sure I will burn those calories off. :)

The TM is a necessary evil at times. For me, its late nights and hot summer time when it will be used more often than not. Winter runs outdoors in the south is the best time for running!

Subcontractors brought donuts and chick-fil-a minis this morning... I cant say no to that, I got the post run munchies from last nights run. Also, its just something about parents / maw maws always having candy at arms reach 24/7. I have no idea why, but I am never disappointed by it. lol

We usually get a couple of days of snow/sleet/ice that hangs around for a week or two. Other than that you are right - I love running outside when it doesn't feel like the surface of the sun + humidity.

MMM Chick-fil-a minis! I could not say no to that either! My boss brought Duncan Donuts to work this week and I was strong, lol. They are building one here in our little town, with a Little Cesar's and Basking Robbins all in the same building. :) As long as I don't start in on the candy I am fine. Once I have one piece I can't seem to stop myself. So I have to go cold turkey lol!

Which of his plans are you following? 18/55 18/70?

I did the 18/70 plan. It was a lot of grinding miles but the pay off came the last few miles of my race when I had nothing left but somehow managed to keep the legs churning those last few miles.

For Houston I have switched to Hansons. I feel like I Pfitz's did a great job of giving me endurance and I'm hoping Hansons will give me a little more speed while keeping the endurance.

However, any time I run for more than an hour and a half, I find myself getting anxious, like I should be spending time doing other things, especially on a weekday! Does this happen to anyone else???
Yes! Me! I even feel this way on a weekend. Mom-guilt.

You are so right about it seeming like there were more opportunities for candy this year. I feel like since Halloween happened on a Monday, by the time Monday came there were already town parties, church trunk or treats, block parties, daycare goodie bags, etc etc etc. My kiddo has a Halloween b-day too so we had birthday party in there too. TOO MUCH CANDY!

I've only been able to muster 6 miles for my longest midweek runs. My marathon plan had some 7 & 8 milers mid week that I just couldn't get done - 4:30am is early enough and I just couldn't get up any earlier than that. Then I thought I could make up some miles later in the day, but, nope, not during football season, when my life is running kids around. For my next marathon, I think I'll vow to make more of an effort on that front.

As far as eating my kids candy? I am out of control people! Damn sweet tooth. This is why I run - I run so I can eat! And :drinking1!!!

I'm terribly behind on this thread, mostly due to the time suck that is moving, but I thought I'd post my totals from last month.

October mileage: 47.93 miles. That's an uptick of 20 miles from last month. Although I really need to buckle down starting ASAP because I've not only got the Half during WDW Marathon Weekend coming up...I went ahead and signed up for the Rebel Challenge the following weekend at DL. Like a dummy. ;)

QOTD: It seems someone is always looking to get their first GPS watch or upgrade to a newer one for various reasons. What watch or GPS device do you use for tracking your runs (or other activities) and why did you choose it?
l

I currently have the Forerunner 610. Was given to me as a gift just over 4 years ago. Still works good except I need a new heart strap.

Sorry. Catching up again.

QOTD:

I had three 13.1x mile midweek runs in September. These were 10 mile tempo runs with 1.5 miles of warm-up and cool-down. When I was wrapping up my first one, I thought it would be cool to know that I had run a half marathon before work... so I made sure all my cool-downs went a little long.
