The Running Thread - 2016

Since we all need to start out September mileage this week...

This is me pretty much every running morning when the alarm goes off at 4:30.

QOTD: Its the end of the month and time to post your monthly mileage. Earlier this month I asked what was your goals for the month. How did your actual compare to your goal?

August has truly been a case of the the good, the bad and the ugly for me. I am so frustrated right now, I don't know what to do:

Good
Total Miles: 110.39 (Definitely good, a new PR)
Total Time: 19:47:25
Average Pace: 10:43/mile

Bad
Last week the meniscus in my bad knee flared up and I missed my tempo and long runs (17 miles total). After I miss tonight's 5 miles (see ugly, below), I'll be down 22 miles for the month from my plan.

Ugly
My meniscus flare cleared up with no further problems, which I thought was a good thing. Then, during my two easy 5 milers on Monday and Tuesday, my Achilles has started to act up. I really don't know what to do at this point. Definitely skip tonight's 5 miles, but I have to get on a plane to DL for the DDD first thing in the morning. I am really worried about how it's going to hold up for the races (although I am taking them easy). Does anyone have any advice they can give on running through this? Right now it's been ibuprofen, stretching and ice and I plan to go out tonight and try to find a support brace. Anything else I can do? I'm also worried because it's <10 weeks until my marathon, too, with Dopey following a couple of months behind that.

Well a good news/bad news mileage report for me. I got in 22 miles, which is less than I hoped for this month. But, vacation and illness took out a couple of weeks entirely. The good news is its 22 more miles than July, which had a big fat 0;) So, slow restart, but better than nothing. I am hoping for about 60 in September.

Another race to add to my calendar...

CheapRunnerMike - Lakeside Olympic Triathlon - 9/11/2016 - 2:20:00

Hope the "goal time" isn't sandbagging, but I'm not sure what the Ironman impact on my legs will be. I'd really like to get on the Age Group podium though, if I do I will likely win the season series for Long Course!

ATTQOTD: August running miles- 65.5 Just where I wanted to be! :)

I need to continue to try and do better at waking up early. If I miss my 6:15 am run (while my older kids are here and I can run outside), I have to wait until the late morning when I have to use the treadmill. Outside runs are so much better though! I'm sure a 6:00am wake up call seems laughable to many of you that wake up way earlier, but DH and I always stay up so late it is very hard for me to wake up early!

August Miles

The injury bug bit again, but the 37.4 miles I did get is more than it seemed. And better than July when the real/first injury happened (23.7).

This week we have the following folks with races:

03 - @Kathymford - Dumbo Double Dare 10k (1:15:00 / N/A)
04 - Kathymford - Dumbo Double Dare Half Marathon (2:50:00 / N/A)

With that in mind we are going to switch these to no goals. I'm kind of secretly/not so secretly hoping I can at least beat my last RD 10k (1.26.11). But I'm determined not to push too hard.

The highs are 78-82, yikes.

Funny ... I'm excited by these temps because it's been way hotter here leading up to it. I'm pretty sure last year was worse. It's been in the 90s lately ...

@camaker I don't have any advice for your injury specifically, but just wanted you to know you're not the only one running this thing injured. :)

ATTQOTD:

August
Total Miles: 102.81
Total Time: 15:12:32
Average Pace: 8:53/mile

My two goals for August were:
PR on my 10 miler - accomplished by a minute and 20 seconds
Continue training for my upcoming half marathon - didn't miss any planned training runs this month! <-- I think this might be a first for me!

To run the 6 World Majors, but that's dependent on me deciding that I actually like running marathons.

That's my problem. I like the idea of it, but I think a half is all I'll probably ever want to do. It's not so much the race, but the training that kills me. When I get up to 9 or 10 miles in half training, it's brutal for me.

QOTD: Its the end of the month and time to post your monthly mileage. Earlier this month I asked what was your goals for the month. How did your actual compare to your goal?

I don't remember what my goal was. Probably to actually run regularly. I've failed in that regard, through no fault of my own. I'm hurt again, so I'm walking right now. I do have my eye on a 5K in September, so we'll say that's the goal for the immediate future. I don't even have to run it, but I'd like to finish it upright and not in pain.

Anyone noticed that FlowTracks Facebook account getting hacked today? Lol it's very NSFW type stuff. Some of the comments are priceless

I think some people on this thread mentioned doing the Marine Corps Marathon so heads up that they announced some changes this morning due to the metro system not opening early this year. http://www.nbcwashington.com/traffi...arly-for-Marine-Corps-Marathon-391765711.html

I watched their announcement this afternoon. I deferred to next year due my hamstring injury, but I was still curious what "might have been" so I watched while I ate lunch. Seems like not a huge deal for the marathon, longer starting window in case people can't get there on time, and some course changes to make the beat the bridge cutoff the same time but an earlier distance (for those who may start significantly late). The main thing that struck me was the huge change for the 10k, I'd be frustrated if I signed up for that. All Arlington vs. DC and Arlington are not too comparable in my book, as a former DC and Alexandria resident. But I do understand the constraints they are under with the Metro maintenance upgrades that are underway. I think they're doing their best with the many constraints they face.

August Training Summary
Total Miles: 127.1 miles
Total Time: 18:59:15
Average Pace: 8:58/mi
Average HR: 147/min

This is my first month coming off an injury (hip bursitis), so I am happy with the mileage. The average HR is a little high for the average pace, but it's not unexpected given that I had about three weeks of recovery before this month's training, so I was slightly out of shape entering into the month.

So I've been really trying to delve into learning more about the science of running and how to make improvements. I think I've started to put together the whole puzzle in my mind of how it works and how to improve. So if you'd like to check it out and critique it, head over to my journal post here: Eureka!

Ahh trying to slowly catch up after a crazy week with work. I missed lots of questions of the day!

ATTQOTD: August mileage was 58.5. I can't completely remember my goal, but I think it was to stick with the Galloway training plan for the DL 1/2, which I mostly achieved woo! And for yesterday's question: My previously unspoken desire may be to complete a WDW marathon at some point. Would like to continue with running more halves and shorter distance races, stay consistent with my running, incorporate more yoga, etc, before entertaining that thought further though!

Good luck to all running races this weekend and hope to see some of you out on the course in Disneyland! :)
