The Running Thread - 2016

ATTQOTD: I'm a bit of an open book, but my desire to maybe one day run the WDW marathon has really only been mentioned here in passing a few times. I still need to find out if I love or loathe halves - which I'll find out next year. I have very little desire to run a full marathon anywhere but disney at this point (famous last words, right?); the draw of running in all four parks is an exciting thought.

I also think at this point my family knows how important it would be for me to conquer a Tink or a Princess, etc rundisney challenge, something more than the single race I did this year at WDW. But I'm not sure I have the support to do it yet since I have not ran a half locally yet & we already have a non-run Oct. 2017 WDW vacation planned. (the idea of multiple dis vacations in one year is outside my families realm of thinking...and I get it.) I kind of want to fall and slip on my keyboard during the next registration period and just be like "ooooops, guess I have to go run X-challenge now anyways."

My wife says the same thing...she will only ever run a marathon at Disney, nowhere else, and even at that she will only run it if I run it with her. Hard to argue with...

While I haven't done either IMTX or IMFL yet, I chose IMFL for my first IM because the weather in Panama City in Nov is generally more pleasant than in Houston in May. They might be moving IMTX to April, but even then it's pretty warm and humid. Could be something you want to factor into your entry decision in a year or two. :)

You have a great point there, its far more likely than not to be HOT in May in TX. Not that it matters, but I noticed that IMFL is on my birthday this year. Would be cool if that happened on the year I was to do it.

Awesome. There is no reason you couldn't do it...I'll say this much, anyone that is able to do the serious training required to run a marathon (even more so, the Dopey) is able to do the training required for Ironman. The training cycle is longer, but the load is similar. The toughest part is making time for the long bike rides, because they are looooong. The training itself though is so much easier on the body than marathon training. @FFigawi is doing IMFL, we'll have to see how he rates the experience! I hear Woodlands is pretty good too, but it can get really hot there.

I believe I can do it with proper training. I would more than likely need to purchase a trainer to get those miles in. We have a local pool that offers early morning hours as well as late afternoon swims with a trainer. I think swimming would be something I would need a lot of coaching on. Sure I know how to swim, but to swim properly and efficiently is a whole different story.

ATTQOTD: It's more fantasy than goal, and I haven't hid it from anyone because I'm an open book that way, but since watching the documentary on it, I have this weird desire to do the Barkley Marathons. I'm not sure what it says about me that the only thing I find truly terrifying about it is the prospect of getting cut up by thorns... I also have a fantasy/death wish about running Badwater and Leadville. :rotfl2:

Saw the documentary as well. That run looks brutal! It may be a little strange about the death wish...

ATTQOTD: The Princess Half is kind of my "secret" goal... but it can't be for much long since I've signed up and am training! Even sooner.... I ran a sub 30min 5K in college (which I know sounds really slow to most everyone here), but I'd like to be there again. I think I'll be close, but my fall 5K will be revealing :-)

QOTD: What goal do you have that seems so far away that you haven't mentioned to anybody because it just seems to be so far out of reach. It could be a time goal / distance / event / ect.

Never said it out loud to anyone but completing Goofy or even Dopey. But in order to even entertain that, I need to first tackle the marathon in January.

I'm sorry about your back pain. That's so frustrating when you can't pin point exactly why you got the pain in the first place.

Yikes, I'm so sorry to hear about the difficult times everyone is going through (@ebradley23 , @asheleycs , @keahgirl8 )!

Thanks. I think it's getting better, but I don't want to speak too soon and do something crazy. I walked on an incline today and it felt good. I may just try walking fast and on an incline for the next few weeks and then try running part of it. While it's frustrating to continue having to start over, it's not as frustrating as being in pain.

I did the 5K + GSC, and then did a local 5K and Half Marathon the weekend after. FOR ME - I wouldn't recommend it, as I ended up hitting a wall during the Cowtown Half and finished hurt. It ultimately caused me to defer the NYC Half because my body was just DONE from Dopey, a 15K, all of the Princess Races and then Cowtown 5K/Half (and all of the requisite maintenance runs) in a span of less than eight weeks.

But you know your training, your body and how you respond!

Exactly. I wouldn't do it either, but I have yet to run ONE half marathon without incident, so maybe I'm not the one to ask.

As I'm sure @Ariel484 knew I would say, start doing yoga. It will give you strength, but more importantly, it will give you flexibility and stretching relief in your back and hips. Runners are very prone to being overly tight in many areas of the body, and yoga will help keep things flexible and loose.

I used to love yoga. I think it's time to get back to it.

Do you recommend any online streaming programs or DVDs or is there a specific style of yoga you like? The ones I've tried at my gym I didn't feel looser afterwards, I think they were more gentle and meditative. I've looked into some local yoga only studios but their class schedules are not something I can do. I'm a SAHM and the studios I've found have classes for the before and after work crowds, which I get, just doesn't work for me.

I actually use YouTube a lot. Tara Stiles is one of my favorites. The Jillian Michaels DVDs are also very good. They are much more challenging. Great strength training.

I use a lot of the videos from Runner's World because they're focused on specific poses and sequences designed to help address problem areas for runners. I also use some of my wife's lesson plans and modify them to suit the time I have available. The link @JulieODC posted is a great resource as well. I know Gaia has a large number of classes and lessons to choose from on their site too because they gave me a free trial when I bought one of their mats. As for styles of yoga, the only one I do not like is ashtanga. It's too prescriptive for me. I prefer vinyasa and other ones where there is flow between the poses and they're not the same poses in the same order all the time.

I actually just got their Yoga for Runners DVD. I will report back on how it is. The Iron Strength one is no joke, btw. That's the one that hurt me.

It used to be Dopey. Now, I really want to do the Glass Slipper and Pixie Dust Challenges in 2018. I don't know if that is possible for me any more, but it's too soon to tell. I'm trying not to worry about it until next July.

Princess is awesome! I have 2 Glass Slippers and I loved it.

Fact. I doubt I would ever run a marathon anywhere but Disney either.

Why not both at the same time? Go big and get that marathon as part of Goofy! You never know what you can do til you try.

I'm pretty paranoid. Even when we stay at the poly or contemporary I like to be out of the room by 3:30. I could probably get up later but I usually set my alarm for 2:45 or 2:50. My goal is to be able to go through most of my race morning routine before I leave the room.

The ole Disney "I'm too excited to sleep" usually applies to me on race morning anyway.

Agreed. I have to be on the first bus.

Ditto. I am pretty sure my wait-till-the-last-minute friend wanted to kill me at the marathon this year. But honestly, I'm not sleeping anyway.

QOTD: The time has finally arrived, it's game week for college football fans across the country! Which team will you be cheering for this year?

ATTQOTD: Good Ole Rocky Top! Go Tennessee!!

I'm seriously considering registering for a half that takes place two weeks after I do Dumbo. A good idea or am I deceiving myself with all that excess energy from tapering?

I have a friend trying to talk me into a half the weekend following Dumbo!

QOTD: What goal do you have that seems so far away that you haven't mentioned to anybody because it just seems to be so far out of reach. It could be a time goal / distance / event / ect.

ATTQOTD: Dopey. I hadn't even entertained a date until I found out all of you are planning for 2018. :) I am going to have to get much faster before I can seriously consider it, though.

ATTQOTD: I can't believe I'm going to write this but here goes, my super secret and probably fantasy goal is to place in a race. I'm always in the back and a couple months ago at a race after watching the runners in the front pass by me on their way to the finish I told myself one day I will be in front.

QOTD: Its the end of the month and time to post your monthly mileage. Earlier this month I asked what was your goals for the month. How did your actual compare to your goal?

ATTQOTD:

Miles for August = TBD (Still have one run left)
I do not think I achieved half of my monthly total for this month. I missed about 2 weeks worth of runs, some of which is due to weather / flood and the other is a result of just feeling lazy from picking up stuff. Currently working to get back on track, but I do feel like I have lost a good bit of fitness.
