The Running Thread - 2016

I have asked this question all over and haven't found anything that has worked. I have to wear closed-toe shoes to work. They don't have to be fancy, or dressy, or even that sturdy. They just have to cover my toes. It is so hot now, that I am looking for some kind of closed-toe sandal or open weave shoe to wear to work. Since I am not only a runner, I am someone with weird feet, I can't just wear anything. I have tried Merrell, Skecher, and Keen. Nothing is comfortable to me or fits right. I wear Oofos flip flops outside of work, but I don' really think the clogs will be cool enough. Does anyone have a suggestion?

Have you tried croc clogs? There looks to be air holes in them so Maybe they can keep your feet cool. I've never worn them personally but I see a lot of kids wearing them and a (male) surgeon I knew wore them all the time. And whattaya know, there's a sale on them:

What makes you want to do the marathon over one of the other races? I don't think the marathon will sell out any time soon based on last year. But if you are trying to avoid signing up then just don't sign up and say it is for me. I won't allow myself to sign up until I get to a certain weight. So by you not signing up you are leaving my spot open for me. :teeth:

Where do you live? Is it more humid now as well because I wouldn't think the temp difference between 55-65 and 70 would be that much different if no added humidity went along with it. I guess I don't understand what the changes are that you were referring to either. What changes in your schedule are you referring to, the time of day you run? Why would you start your training over if you are at 7 mile long runs? You have plenty of time to train, why not just take your runs slower to deal with the heat and when the fall comes you can worry about speed once the temps drop.

I guess more info is needed to give a better recommendation.

OK. I will save my spot for you. After you hit your goal and register, let me know and I will sign up if there are spots left. Done DEAL.

This is probably one of the best spectator hand outs ever from during the LA Marathon...

Just NO NO NO NO NO NO to the deodorant!

@rteetz Grandmas are so special! Sorry for your loss.

I also wanted to let you guys know that my grandma past away yesterday after a long battle with pancreatic cancer. She was an amazing woman. She was also on the trip with me in 2015 for my first WDW race. She is in a better place now and doesn't have to suffer anymore.
Ryan, sorry for your loss.
ATTQOTD: I don't think I've ever really been caught off-guard by anything people have been handing out. Everything has been either food or drink, so on some level it makes sense. I don't drink alcohol, so I don't really pay close attention to handouts I am passing because it seems like a good number of them are alcoholic beverages.
I also don't drink alcohol. Yesterday I was about to grab a cold piece of watermelon when the volunteer hollered "Peach vodka watermelon!" I jerked back my hand and kept running!
ATTQOTD: For the Melbourne Music Half/Marathon last year, there was an official race stop for pickle juice along with the typical water. I love dill pickles like mad, but the thought of drinking the brine during a hot, sweaty half made me a bit ill. Though I totally get the value of such re: electrolytes.
ATTQOD: Got my first taste of a frozen pickle pop. Imagine not drinking the brine, but eating it frozen. Cool, but bitter, bitter, bitter. I choked down two bites before I threw it away.

@LSUlakes Finished the Echo 1/2 Marathon in Central FL yesterday. Extremely hot and humid, but what are you supposed to do when you go on vacation to the beach? Sign up for a nearby run, of course! Time: 2:26:40.

ATTQOTD: echoing @Anisum and @MommaoffherRocker - "pixie dust" at Tink, but they were just setting up when I passed them. Not sure if that was a good thing or bad thing!

Quick question ... with the summer running, I've had a few issues with bugs flying into my eyes. I wear hats, but the darn gnats get into my eyes and they hurt! Do you all wear running sunglasses? If so, what do you recommend? Maybe I should run with my head bent down?

Happens to me all the time. It's even worse for me because when I run at night I wear a light on my head so they head right for the light. I just deal with it. I am more worried about swallowing them so I try to breath through my nose, which is hard when your running.

In other news...I did my first 5K since Princess yesterday! I had to walk and had a little bit of pain, but it felt so good to get outside and move and sweat!

I vote for Crocs. You can even get Disney ones. I know they aren't in fashion anymore but they are comfy and I find them to be cool.

QOTD: I haven't seen anything off being handed out at races yet.

Ryan, I am sorry to hear about your grandmother!

Well my only races being Disney races I can't say I've seen anything really crazy. Mostly candy, licorice, and other just quick snack type stuff.

I also wanted to let you guys know that my grandma past away yesterday after a long battle with pancreatic cancer. She was an amazing woman. She was also on the trip with me in 2015 for my first WDW race. She is in a better place now and doesn't have to suffer anymore.

@rteetz I am so sorry for your family's loss. Cancer sucks!

When is the cutoff for submitting a POT for Wine and Dine. Isn't it August? I would run this upcoming race for fun and then find a 10K and try to kill that race for a POT. You're picking a 1/2 marathon for a POT race when all you need is a 10K anyway.
It's August 2nd. But July is going to be a busy month for me, so I don't think I'll be able to fit in another race. And strangely there aren't many local 10Ks during that time to choose from anyway (I ran into the same issue last year). If only the POT deadline was just a week later - there's an out of town 10K that I'm looking to do on August 6 that I could have used. :( And I know all that's needed is a 10K, but I felt better about the idea of actually having a half time submitted for a half, since there wouldn't be the time adjusting for increasing the distance. But oh well, I guess I'll see what happens on Saturday, and at least I do already have a time submitted.

I've been in that position and approached it with the mindset that I'd take it as ti came: if I felt really good in the first mile or so, I'd go for it. Otherwise, I'd ease back and enjoy the ride. It wound up being a really good day and I nailed a new PR. So my advice is to wait and see how you feel that day before making the call!
Thanks, this is good advice as well. I guess what I have to take away from everyone's replies is just to go in planning to take it easy and do all I can to enjoy the experience, and see what being in the moment brings. You're right - I could end up feeling really good and maybe the weather won't be as bad as I'm imagining it will be. And if it is, oh well, it's a race. There are worse things in life that could happen. :)

QOTD: I have not personally seen much out of the ordinary outside whiskey shots during the Detroit Marathon last year. But I did read a book last year where people were serving chilli-dogs to ultra runners. I get for an ultra run the need for more substantive food; but chilli-dogs? That would NOT be a good scene for me!

It's even worse for me because when I run at night I wear a light on my head so they head right for the light.
My SO got me some of these for Christmas. I haven't run with them yet, since I'm not really a night runner, but I asked for them for early mornings or winter afternoons: Night Runner 270. They are headlights for your shoes. :)

What about ballet flats? I have bad feet and I love my Tieks!

Congrats on your first post-Princess 5k.

For shoes I'm a fan of Danskos and Fitflops. I've never worn Danskos beyond their clogs but they have these which seem to be along the lines of what you're looking for. Fitflops have tons of flats but I'm not certain there are any closed toe sandals.

I have heard only amazing things about Tieks. Sadly none of the reviews were from people with high arches so I'm hesitant. Do you think they'd work?

QOTD: Do you lace up your shoes differently than what most consider the standard method? Pic below:

ATTQOTD: I normally use the method above, but have had issues where my toes felt like they where squeezed together and used the method shown for high arches. Worked really well at the time.

I have used the heel lock lacing before, but really didn't think it made much of a difference for me. I've actually not seen the high arches one before (I mean I've seen shoes laced that way but didn't know it was to help with high arches). Hmmmm... I might try that because I do have high arches and the lacing can be tight for me across the top of my foot.

Congrats on reaching your goal despite the warmer temps! Enjoy your vacation!

ATTQOTD: This is going to be hard to explain lol! I skip a crossover between the very bottom holes and the next ones up - that's for pretty much every shoe (gives a bit more room in the forefoot.) In some shoes, I also need to skip a crossover across the instep. In still other shoes, I go over instead of under to go through the second-to-top hole, then go under into the top hole without crossing over, then tie (helps with heel lock without doing the butterfly thing, which puts too much pressure on my peroneal tendons.)

Admit it... knot tying is a hobby of yours.

ATTQOTD: I lace mine normal but I might have to try the one for toe problems since I was blessed with my second toe longer than my first and it is constantly giving me problems.
