The Running Thread - 2016

I understand about the preference for glasses. I wear glasses for early morning runs but contacts the rest of the day. No better feeling than getting sweat and salt trapped in your contacts in the heat of the day. I am considering Lasik this winter to eliminate glasses or contacts and some of these issues.
I had Lasik 5 years ago and it was one of the best things I ever did in my life. Zero regrets, other than waiting so long to get it done. I do find that I wear sunglasses a lot more than I used to as I am a bit more sensitive to the light, but it's an easy trade-off for 20/20 :smooth:

QOTD: Do you lace up your shoes differently than what most consider the standard method? Pic below:

All but 1 pair of my shoes are done standard. I have a pair of racing flats that I lace with the heel slipping method, but I use the the very last set of eyelets. I had a pair of Saucony Kinvaras once that rubbed my heel wrong and it blistered... my only real running blister to date. I was told to tie them this way and it would help... it really didn't. However this pair of flats happen to be Saucony, so I laced them that way the first time I wore them and have kept them that way. I did a google search and there are quite a few ways to lace up.

ATTQOTD: I normally use the method above, but have had issues where my toes felt like they where squeezed together and used the method shown for high arches. Worked really well at the time.

I use the heel lock method but keep the more distal loops loose and wear cushiony socks.

:rotfl2: Y'know, I've always wanted to buy some rope and a book on nautical knot-tying!

Any folks in the Houston / Katy Texas area know of any races worth running July 4th weekend? TIA

It depends on the shoe. For my two Adidas (Adios and Boston) I use the straight bar lacing right now. (The one labeled for high arches.) My 1400s and LyteRacers get standard laces. (Although the Boston's and 1400s might be trading places.)

I'm glad this question came up, because I'm a big advocate of tailoring your lacing to your needs. Someone mentioned using straight bar to help get rid of extensor tendonitis. It works because it allows you a tighter fit, but doesn't put as much pressure on the top of your foot. I'm a huge believer in it, as keeping a snug fit is very important but can be uncomfortable.

Also, re: heel lock. Effective, but it may not be necessary if you be sure to really jam your heel to the back of the shoe before you lace up, thus avoiding a tight squeeze over some tendons and blood vessels.

Check out http://www.fieggen.com/shoelace/lacingmethods.htm for a good breakdown of different methods, and the reasons behind some of them (beyond looks). It's definitely worth experimenting with.

QOTD: Lacing up my shoes... This is something I have not given much thought to; I simply pull them on and lace them up. I am going to try the high arch method and see how that feels.

It's August 2nd. But July is going to be a busy month for me, so I don't think I'll be able to fit in another race. And strangely there aren't many local 10Ks during that time to choose from anyway (I ran into the same issue last year). If only the POT deadline was just a week later - there's an out of town 10K that I'm looking to do on August 6 that I could have used. :( And I know all that's needed is a 10K, but I felt better about the idea of actually having a half time submitted for a half, since there wouldn't be the time adjusting for increasing the distance. But oh well, I guess I'll see what happens on Saturday, and at least I do already have a time submitted.

It makes sense. July is a hot month so there are fewer races. I don't think they adjust the time from a 10K to a 1/2 like they do for a 1/2 and full on POT.

My SO got me some of these for Christmas. I haven't run with them yet, since I'm not really a night runner, but I asked for them for early mornings or winter afternoons: Night Runner 270. They are headlights for your shoes. :)

Thanks for the recommendation. I have a light that I love though and the bug issue is really only an issue right now. Soon enough I won't need it because it will be light later and in the fall there are less bugs.

QOTD: I just do the normal way. It never occurred to me that lacing them differently would make a difference.

A couple weeks ago we had a question about what new running gadgets we may want. At the time I said nothing but I just had a new item brought to my attention. I am leaning toward buying it. All the reviews I read were excellent. I just wanted to see if anyone here has heard of it, or uses it themselves. The person who brought it to my attention is a friend of mine but he is related to a professional runner, as in has paid sponsors and gets invited to the big races, like Boston. He uses it, although its not one of his sponsors.

ATTQOOD: I've been struggling with whole-foot numbness on hills. My shoes are two years old so I'm going to the running store soon to get a replacement and have them check my feet out, but until then I've been lacing my shoes this way. It's definitely helped. An article I read said it's supposed to help for wide feet but I have narrow feet.

A big THANKS to everyone who had suggestions about sunglasses! I'm super lazy (and cheap) so I'm going to hold off for now unless I find the bugs unbearable. I also can't stand wearing glasses on a sweaty face. I don't know if running sunglasses are better at staying on than regular glasses. I used to wear glasses when I had overnight shifts and they'd slide off my face in the middle of work - awful.

I'm lazy. Not only do I lace my shoes the boring, standard way, I tie them once and then just slip them on and off until they come untied and I have to retire them.

I double knot mine once I have a good "fit" and just slip them on and off too!

I run with regular glasses and I find they keep out the gnats. I will say that if they fell off it probably wasn't fitted right. My glasses can slide down a tiny bit (they're distance only so I look over them when I'm close to what I'm looking at) but they never slide off even when running or playing sports. Sunglasses are more difficult because they're not fitted to you unless they're prescription but it's definitely possible to find ones that fit you well.

I've got a numbness problem too! I still can't figure out where it's coming from... distribution is mid-dorsal foot and toes. I'm starting to suspect low back aging changes or something similar. I can't get as specific as you can (on hills), but I do notice it on longer runs. I'll start tracking it better so I can address it. It'd be nice if a different shoe would fix it.

I have mutant feet and on top of that I've had bunion surgery on only foot. Now that I've finally found wide enough running shoes (thank goodness), I now have a love/hate relationship with socks and lacing. Something always seems not quite right and can be different depending on the day. I use the heel-lock lacing, but sometimes that makes the lacing too tight on that top part of my foot, so I have to find the perfect balance. The other day I had the lacing too tight on my forefoot and got weird arch pains after my run that freaked me out (went away after some massage and taking my shoes off).
Oh this is so me too, glad to know I'm not the only one with the love/hate with lacing. I used heel-lock for awhile, but yeah found it too tight sometimes on the top of my foot so now don't anymore. I do skip the first holes at the toe area, but for awhile skipped another set up higher. My shoe tongue slips a lot so I'm doing some double back with the tongue loop now and some days it's good and some it still bugs me and feels like it's pulling/tight. Anything too tight at all on the lacing and everything gets off, mostly my right shoe/shin or my knees will hurt and it usually is from the lace too tight somewhere. But then go too loose and the foot slides.

They are. :) The Oakley ones I got do not move. The Under Armour ones stayed put pretty well, too, but the Oakley ones have little grippy nosepads that stick like glue. The glasses are super light, too, so there's not really any weight to force them down your nose like on regular glasses.

I love how active this thread is! Even if it's hard for me to keep up sometimes!

My toe feels way better, I think I'm going to give it a few more days as I have active walking days today, Friday and Saturday. But if I feel good I'm going to go for a run on Sunday and start my training again!

Side-question: Does anyone have any good suggestions or videos online that highlight or teach good running form? I'd like to watch/study some this week to give myself some new things to think about. @DopeyBadger gave me a great idea to have someone film me during a tempo run so I check in with my form and although the self-conscious part of me (and the ego part, let's be honest) don't like the idea a ton, the part that wants to prevent injury and get better really likes the idea.
Any good video/book suggestions and any good tips for form?

I totally high five random runners. I make a habit of it at turnaround sections during races especially, but have been known to throw the hand up in the air even on regular runs through the park. Love starting my mornings with your inspiration pics too @Waiting2goback, keep them coming!

High fives can be embarrassing, too, though. I absolutely LOVE (where's sarcasm font, again?) coming up on a spectator putting their hand out for a high five, only to find out they were aiming for the person behind me! Especially if it's a little kid (on either end of the high five).
