The Running Thread - 2016

Fellow introvert here as well. But the funny thing is Disney is the only place I don't mind being around a lot of people like that. I have no explanation but whether I am packed into Main Street watching the fireworks or jammed into a corral for a race it doesn't bother me.

Same here!

So someone suggested creating a Strava Club on another thread so that we can all share our training. If you'd like to join, just create an account and click this link for the club: https://www.strava.com/clubs/DISboards_Community . It's open to anyone who'd like to join regardless if you're currently training for any RunDisney event or not. Hope to see you on there!

Well I joined - you all need someone to beat, right? :)

LOL! I see it less as trying to beat each other and more as trying to support each other.

In fact prior to coming up with this club, I was thinking of trying to come up with a group challenge of some sort. Like see if our whole disboard community can circle the globe with our training. Everyone can contribute no matter how much you train. Like a group goal (You know I love my goals)!

Yes you do DB! That's why we love you!

I am curious, could spectators park at WWOS either day?
Nope. However, they stopped running buses to EP at 10am on Sat after the 10K because they had to open the road up to traffic coming in for the expo and kids' races. So you couldn't park at WWOS before the 10K, but you could after. No parking at WWOS at all for the half on Sunday.

I would add that the post-race area could have been better. They were pretty aggressive about moving people along, so if you weren't with your significant other or a friend, you couldn't get a backdrop photo with them. It's a minor thing, just an oversight by somebody.
Agreed. And I was pretty bummed that I bought the refillable beer cup, then discovered that WWOS is in a different county with different liquor laws, so I couldn't get my refill after the half. :( A full beer might've helped my attitude over the 4 miles of bus queue lol!

It funny that the ones that have said they would do it are Floridians. I hope there is no drag racing event on that day. I would like to do this event. I did watch a few of the videos. It is a little narrow but nice. Would they have vertical alligator mile marker banners? :-)
I'm hoping they get the gators to hold signs! "Slow down - we're hungry!" "I know a short cut..." "Touch here for power!" :rotfl2:

Because we know that gators aren't typically a threat if you know what you're doing. :)
True. Which isn't to say they don't still make me nervous, even after 20+ years living among them!

Okay, I can't post this anywhere else as it hasn't been announced yet but my direct boss just got a promotion and she is moving me into her position! It won't be for a couple of months but it is a $5 an hour raise! Is it totally lame that I'm just thinking that now I have more racing/Disney money?? Oh, and Sparkle Skirt money, lol!

Congrats! Not lame as I recently got a promotion and had similar thoughts about being able to do extra races now :)

Hey guys! So I'm looking for some advice. Sunday looks like it's going to rain for my race and I can't recall ever running more than 4 miles in the rain (this is because we have stone sidewalks in many places and on parts where I can't run in the road the sidewalks become just as dangerous in the rain) so I'm looking for some advice. The weather is supposed to be between 50-55F and I would normally wear capris and a tank top (both running material) with a wide headband to keep my hair out of my eyes. Now I'm wondering if I should start with throw-away clothes or my running jacket and if there is anything I need to do to prepare for what looks to be 10mi of light to moderate rain. Does anyone have experience on long runs or races in the rain?

I run long in the rain all the time here in FL: the only things I need are a hat or visor with a brim to keep rain off my face, Vaseline on my feet to prevent blisters, and a ziploc for my phone. I'd be freezing at the temp, so I'd be wearing more layers, but YMMV lol! For waiting for the race to start, a cheap poncho. And warm, dry clothes to change into as soon as possible after.

Thanks for doing this! I have joined, and once I get off of my self-imposed Disabled List, I will start adding miles!

Yeah, 55 degrees in moderate rain for 10 miles could be miserable depending on the wind. I would go with a light rain jacket where you can zip up/down to regulate the heat. And second the hat.

55 is normally an ideal temperature for me because once it gets over 60 I start to feel hot on runs. My concern is the fact that the rain may make it feel colder. I can definitely do the poncho and warm clothes though. For the Vaseline I'm a little concerned about it staining my socks but I would rather sacrifice a pair then get blisters. I generally don't wear hats while running but I believe there is probably at least one around the house if I look hard enough.

I am worried about the wind but the forecast doesn't seem to be calling for major wind. I will definitely give the jacket a go since I can always take it off and wrap it around my waist if I get too hot.

I don't use Strava but this might make me start.

Another option, which I've used in all my rainy but not windy/cold races, is arm sleeves. They seem to help just enough and they are easy to roll down once I get too warm. I absolutely agree with the recommendation for the vaseline or body glide on your feet. In fact, I body glided everywhere and it seemed to work because I didn't have any blisters or chafing except in the couple spots I missed.

Congrats!! NOt lame at all, when I got my bonus money, first thing came to mind was which rD races I can sign up!
