The Running Thread—2023

I was today years old when I found out about the half and full marathons in St George, Utah, due to one of the daughter's friend in it this morning. For the half, it is all downhill, a 1,892' drop in elevation!

Does anyone have any experience with this race? It looks like the scenery is beautiful, and should be good for a PR.

So I cheated on my shoes. Have been running in Hoka Cliftons for long runs for years but I needed a new pair and decided to try something new - Brooks Ghost Max. Only one run in, but I like how they feel. Just strange to be in a new type of shoe. If things go to plan, these will likely be by shoe for the marathon in January.

Glad to see a positive review - I’ve been seriously debating giving them a try 🤔

Been having a rough go recently, I did a long run and looks like I gave myself a helluva gluteus medius strain that’s radiating into my lower back and giving me a lot of sciatic pain when I run, presumably pinching a nerve with inflammation. Already saw my PT and he’s working on a plan to get my butt up and running again, but does anyone have any advice or tips? Worried I’ll be walking C2C in Jan :(

My runs on the tread are all easy, and generally the same pace, so I’ll see if the watch “learns”
I’ve had good experience with my garmin getting more accurate over time for easy runs. Hopefully the same is true for you!

Same here. Especially if you use the same treadmill. Before I bought mine and used the gym, it was all over the place since every treadmill is slightly different. Since buying my own and using it for the last 2+ years (and with the improvements Garmin has made), I hardly ever have to calibrate unless I do something dramatically different in a particular workout.

I have lots of friends who have done the StG races. They are generally very well organized and the weather is GREAT this time of year. Just be sure you train for the downhill or your quads will hate you after!

Anyone have suggestions on breathable running socks? Yesterday for a ten mile race, I wore my new Asics Gel Nimbus 25 with the running socks I normally wear for long runs, and my feet got really hot in the Nimbus. So looking to try out some socks that may be more breathable and see if that helps.

I love my Balega Hidden Comfort, but if the shoes themselves aren't breathable, the socks aren't going to make a difference.

I also find my Gel Nimbus 25 run hot. I usually wear Injinji socks or Balegas with them. I also love Bombas running line.

I've been happy with the Injinji running "toe" socks. Bonus that they help prevent blisters between the toes.

(As a reminder or in case anyone doesn't know, remember that you shouldn't use fabric softener on moisture wicking materials, as it clogs up the breathability.)

Yea, I think may go with the Novablast 3 and Novablast 2 rotation for MW. I do think I will bring the Nimbus to wear in the parks afterward for that cushioning. I couldn't imaging going another 16+ miles in the Nimbus my feet were so hot.

Outer shell question:
It is raining. I usually just accept that I will get wet. If it is cold, my sweater gets wet and heavy but still warm (I wear that in winter too). I sweat a lot so I am used to humidity. I am thinking that I might like having a shell that would cut the big rain or the wind sometimes but am not sure. I might get really too hot fast and also get annoyed with the swishing sound.
What do you use and in what circumstances?

This is my dilemma...I run hot (literally). I have bought (and given away) some very nice water resistant/breathable jackets that were supposedly for this purpose but just did not work for me. Seems that while they may deter the outer moisture (rain), they just trap in the moisture that I am producing (sweat). I have yet to find the unicorn of water resistant/breathable that will work.

This sounds VERY similar to my chronic condition - mine‘s root cause is scoliosis causing compression, leading to nerve impingement, so there’s no actual remedy, only attempts at pain relief. The #1 thing working for me is a Rx for Gabapentin. It’s just astounding how well it works on nerve pain (and nerve pain only - it won’t touch muscle pain I like Aleve for that.) I take 100mg at night when the sciatica is being bad. Beyond that, staying active helps, and especially doing yoga and Pilates. A huge thing, too, is not sitting or standing longer that 15-20 mins at a time (other than while exercising.) At work or at home watching TV, I set a timer and switch from sit to stand every 15 mins, and take a short walk every other cycle. Foam rolling my hamstrings and quads + using a softball to roll out my glutes is also a big help. I hope you find relief quickly!

SmartWool! I wear them year round in FL: they keep my feet perfectly comfortable in summer, even when the pavement is scorching, and warm in winter.

About once or twice a year, it’s rainy AND chilly and I try wearing a rain jacket to run… it always results in disappointment. :rotfl: I’m happier in a couple thin layers, with a regular tech fabric jacket on the outside: yeah, it gets wet, but I feel like my temp stays more stable and I’m more comfortable than sweating in a hard shell.

Agree on this. I won't even try some sort of rain jacket until it's raining in the 30s F...but then when I do, I always end up getting just as wet from my own sweat. I suppose that at least it's a warmer wet?

I think that if you're willing to spend ~$300 you can find that combination of water resistance and breathability, but the tech is still really expensive. I just don't have that situation happen enough to be able to justify that kind of money.

Not perfect by any means but I do wear this jacket quite a bit in late fall/winter when it’s windy and misting/light rain. It isn’t a rain coat per se but I like it in those runs with light precipitation. It has a vent in the back to prevent overheating. My DH has the same jacket.
