The Prodigal Daughter Returns - UPDATE! Ch. 9 Happy Ending

Day 1 - Departure

I work nights at a city-county call center in Charlotte, NC. I get off at 6:30 am so the plan was to leave as soon as I got home.

"As soon as" turned out to be 15 minutes, but I'm on my way to WDW - what do I care?!

For some reason, I was determined to document everything. I happen to know that we pulled out of the driveway at exactly 7:33 am with a current temperature of 35 degrees (the previous night had been our first frost). Aren't you glad I wrote that down? This will continue throughout "departure day."

Just past the SC border we saw gas for $1.99 a gallon! Big deal to us. We're currently paying around $2.13 - but I'm a stickler for gas prices.

At 8:26 am (40 degrees) we stop somewhere in SC (please don't ask me where!) for a McDonald's breakfast. I've been up since 5 pm the previous day and even though I have eaten, I'm suddenly starving. One sausage, egg, and cheese bagel with hash browns and orange juice later, we're good to go.

As you can see, I've decided to forgo any good and/or healthy food choices on my vacation. Meh.

After breakfast I attempted to sleep. The plan was to sleep enough that I'm still able to function in the evening when we go to DTD, but not so much that I'm up all night. I take one sleeping pill, but only got about an hour of sleep in the backseat. I completely missed it, I don't feel like I've slept and don't rememeber falling asleep, but my mother insists that I snored.

At 10:40 am in SC (just north of Savannah, GA my parents tell me), I-95 turns into a parking lot.

What's going on? How long will it last? Will my foot get bitten by a red ant when I wander out of the car?

Stay tuned!

Day 1 cont.

Where were we? Oh, right...stuck on I-95.

Turns out a pickup pulling a camper overturned. It didn't look like any other cars were involved.

After 45 minutes of sitting in the same spot (we made friends with the peeps in the car behinds us and, yes, I did get bitten by fire ants while standing on the side of the road - it was 64 degrees out and felt wonderful), we were on our way again.

In order to rush through this and get us to WDW a little faster:

11:45 am (67 degrees) - bathroom break
12:23 pm (70 degrees) - Georga state line
2:20 pm (80 degrees) - stop for gas and lunch at Wendy's
2:57 pm (78 degrees) - Florida state line.

I wanted to take a picture of the first WDW billboard I saw, but after being up so long, I was a little slow. I missed the first one - advertising the Food and Wine Festival. I also missed the second one - a Blizzard Beach billboard (say that five times fast!)

I got the Turtle Talk with Crush billboard, though!

We got off of I-4 at 5:36 pm and hit WDW property at exactly 5:38 pm. Mmm...WDW air!

Shades of Green is on Magic Kingdom property so we made our way over. We then joined the huge line of people waiting to check in.

I've never seen the line that long. While DM stood in line to check in, DD and I grabbed the stuff out of the car. I snapped a couple of lobby pictures and stood guard over the luggage.

I noticed a possible Dis family. Does this sound like you? Blonde mom, brunette dad and daughter, all in lime green, posing for a pic in front of the fireplace in the SoG lobby Sunday late afternoon. If so, hi!

We received two adjoining rooms on the third floor of the old section. SoG remodeled in 2004 and added on a whole new section, a new lobby, and a parking deck. We had a great view outside with a large tree and some walkways. Not quite as pretty as last March's view of the golf course (you get a lot of animals - wild turkey and deer mostly - when you have a golf course view).

We unpacked, and relaxed a little before heading over to DTD for dinner.

We drove - the SoG bus only goes to DTD once an hour. Mom and I figured that Earl of Sandwich would be a great place to eat. Had to drive around for awhile to fnd a spot and then we headed straight to Earl.

It was busy! Earl of Sandwich opened during my college program in 2004, so I've loved it since the beginning. It was never that busy when I was down. Maybe word was starting to spread.

Even though it was busy, there was a guy standing in the queue checking in with people to see if they had any questions about sandwiches or how to order. Very nice. The guy who took our orders was a little curt, but considering how busy it was, it was understandable.

DM got a grilled cheese w/tomatoes and a bag of salt and vinegar chips. DD got the club sandwich w/barbeque chips and a cookie and a diet coke. I got the tuna melt and split a fruit cup and bottle of water with DM.

Everybody enjoyed the food. I absolutely loved my sandwich. Like I said, I've always like Earl of Sandwich and I also love tuna. This was very good and if you like tuna, I def. reccommend this sandwich!

After dinner, I made a lap around Pin Traders while DD and DM looked in Once Upon a Toy. I didn't buy any new pins.

I met the 'rents over in Toy. None of us bought anything there either, but DD and I took a second to consider an $85 robotic R2D2. *sigh* It would have been great at scaring the poop out of our three cats.

I wanted to go to Basin. Again, didn't buy anything, but it was fun to smell stuff. Meanwhile, my parents went over to World of Disney and I decided I would find them in there. Bad idea! I've spent enough time at DTD to know, but I'm going stick with the "I was drunk with Disney happiness" story. I didn't make note of time, but it felt like I wandered around for a good half hour to 45 minutes before I found my DD.

Just in time, too. Time to bolt to the airport to pick up DGA.

Unfortunately, family drama ensued.

Ah, 70 views and no replies - I'm rollin' in it now!

Day 1 cont.

So we drive over to the airport. I actually fell asleep for awhile in the car so I missed the drama. DM had directions to the airport, but not enough to make DD happy. DD doesn't like not knowing where his is - we'd never been to the Orlando Airport before.

Anyway we arrive and play the waiting game. DGA's flight was supposed to arrive at 11:01 pm. It was delayed 10 minutes.

We got out of the airport at 11:30 (with no baggage claim either, DD and DM had been up to Maryland the weekend before for DD's 30th high school reunion and DGA gave them her suitcase then).

We got back to SoG at 12:30 am, I hit the showers and then fell into bed with the alarm set for 7:30.

Day 2 Epcot!

I was up at 7:28 am (before the alarm, I may have been just a tad excited). I wash up and get dressed (straightened my hair - I had planned to do this every day, but sleeping became a priority) and grabbed some Starbucks from the cart just off the lobby. A Chai Tea Latte - my favorite!

We bought our tickets in SoG. A one day base ticket for DD and 3 two day base tickets for DM, DGA and myself. Ten percent military discount and no tax! Yay.

Caught the bus to TTC, jumped on the gold line monorail direct to Epcot. We entered just after the 9 am opening.

Our first stop was the Land Pavillion where we picked up four FPs for Soarin'.

Next we went over to Mission:Space where DD and I rode Orange Team - we had about a 10 minute wait. I'd only ridden it once before (before there was Green Team). I've never experienced motion sickness in my life, so I wasn't worried about getting sick, but I hate seeing or hearing people vomit, so I'm always worried about riding the rough rides with other people.

No sickness this ride (though DD and I wished we would have grabbed one of the Barf Bags for a souvenier - next time!). DD and I both had problems with our sinuses after the ride, though.

Test Track was next. I had told DM and DGA that Test Track was nothing they needed to be worried about and that they could handle it, no problem. No go. I don't get them.

DD and I jumped into the single rider line and were on in less than 10 minutes. I rode with a family of four and another single rider. I was in the back with the daughter (around 14 or 15) and the grandmother. At the end of the ride, Grandma says, "Holy s**t! This is the end, right?" Ha!

We head back to use our FPs for Soarin'. Got the 3rd row. DM and I had been on it back in March, but it's all new to DD and DGA. It was an excellent experience. This is the only attraction I go on (well, other than spieled attractions) that gets applause every time.

DD loved it, but commented on jumps from scene to scene being sudden and a little jarring. Killjoy.

It was nearing 11 am at this point and we were all hungry so we decided to get lunch at Sunshine Seasons. DGA and I both had the Ceasar Salad. It was very good and fresh. DM and DD had a turkey and muenster sandwiches w/chips and DD added a chocolate pastry of some kind (which was also good - I stole a bite).

DM, DGA, and I then rode Living w/the Land (DD preferred a bathroom and smoke break).

This has always been a family favorite. While I loved the spielers on the boats (especially if you got to sit up front and talk to them), the new recording was fine and not difficult to hear at all.

I wasn't able to take a picture, but it looked as if they were growing Rosemary into a Hidden Mickey. They were planted in white tubes and grew out of holes on the sides of the tube. It looke like, in some places, they had arranged three holes so that when the Rosemary grew out it shaped a HM. Trying too hard?

We met DD outside of the Land Pavillion.

I had told DM about the new Nemo ride and she was really looking forward to it so we walked over there next. The Seas with Nemo and Friends had a 45 minute posted wait, so we decided to move on.

We walked into Universe of Energy just as Ellen was starting. Always a good show (though once we entered the main dinosaur room, we had no sound until we were just outside of the second room).

DM decided that she felt no need to see Honey, I Shrunk the Audience, so we made plans to meet her in Mouse Gears after the show.

DGA, DD and I got inside just as the Kodak thingy started on the monitors. I love all of the 3D shows and I really like the mice effect on this one. It's great to sit towards the middle of the theater and listen to the screams work their way back. I'm so looking forward to taking my aunt Cathy on this next May.

DM didn't buy anything in Mouse Gears and met us just outside of it.

We decided it was time for a break so headed towards the entrance.

Spaceship Earth is a favorite to ride as we're leaving the park and we walked right onto it.

I love thrill rides, but Spaceship Earth will always hold a special place in my heart. I don't have the greatest memory and my first three trips (at ages 13, 15 and 17) have all kind of melted together, but I remember specifically my first ride on Spaceship Earth. I was awed by Michelangelo painting the Sistine Chapel ceiling.

I took a deep breath at the fall of Rome and held onto it as long as I could.

Out of the park, back on the monorail - TTC - SoG.

LOL. I think it is so funny that you remembered the exact times and temperatures!!! HHHmmm I don't think you were excited for this trip at all! ;)

I am SO looking forward to the Earl of Sandwich!! Thanks for posting about it! :jumping3: I never thought about ordering the tuna sandwich...Hhhhmmm decisions decisions!!

LOL. I always have the best of intentions too when I go on vacation, but I REALLY like sleeping, and just end up pulling my hair back into a ponytail!

DO you have any pics from your trip? I would love to see them here!

great report and I TOO LOVE THE EARL........we ate there twice lsat May and we are looking forward to going again in December. I had the Full Montagu and it was delicious.
I love Soarin and we did that 9 times this past may too. I think I have sat in all three rows and in different directions......different experience each time.
Thanks so much for your report so far

I kept a notebook with me in the car on the way down and wrote all of this time/temp stuff down in it. Seemed important at the time.

I love tuna and this sandwich was delicious! It had melted swiss cheese on it...mmm...

I usually take my showers in the morning, but my plan was to shower at night so my hair can dry while I'm sleeping (I refuse to use a blow dry it - takes too long) and I could straighten it the next morning. I hate to say it (I'm usually such a night owl), but I was out by 10 pm every night except Monday (and only because Studio 60 was on that night was I up until 11 pm). Showering was the last thing on my mind.

I do have pictures, but they haven't been developed/uploaded yet.

Thanks for the comment, I feel special now!

I love the bread there! I also love the tea/lemonade they make with Earl Gray tea. I didn't get it Sunday night because I'm very sensitive to caffeine and I wanted to be able to sleep that night and then I forgot about it! Shame on me!

I did Soarin' twice last March (front row, second row) and twice this trip (third row, front row). While it's a great ride, regardless, I really like sitting in the front row so I don't get distracted by all of the dangling feet. Of course, this past front row ride, I started thinking about people having to smell my nasty "walking all day in Epcot" feet (I was wearing my NothingZ and didn't want them to fall off, so I left them on the ground). Hopefully the orange groves covered up the feet smell.

Thanks for reading!

I agree with you. We found it to be relaxing...a little downtime :teeth:

I'm subscribing and waiting for more.

Aww...thanks! I left my notes at home tonight, but I promise to update with the rest of Day 2 tomorrow!

Spaceship Earth is just a warm, fuzzy feeling all over ride. But I get envious of the pharoah's ability to wear teal colored eye liner.

Okay, so I lied. I can't remember anything if it's not written on my hand, so I've just now remembered to bring my notes with me to work. Sorry!

Back at SoG I immediately took off my sneakers to clip my toenails. I know you needed to know that.

I decided to start my WDW vacation in sneakers because there's so much walking involved at Epcot and sneakers would give me the arch support I required. My feet weren't hurting nearly as much as they were during last March's trip (feet disasters took place!), but they were very "hot" on the bottom.

I also downed two extra strength Tylenols for the big ol' headache I now had.

Tips:
1. Even if Mission:Space doesn't make you sick, beware of sinus headaches!
2. Extra Strength Tylenol Rapid Release (the kind with the little laser drilled holes) really works!

We relaxed in our respective rooms with cool drinks from the vending machines, enjoying the air conditioning, until about 4:30. At that point we walked down to Evergreens, a sports bar on SoG property (over by the Mickey pool), for food. I decided to do the evening in my NothingZ. They're just like Crocs - they even cost the same, but they're a little squishier and they have diamond shaped holes in the top. I have a black pair. I usually don't wear them with socks, but they give me blisters on the tops of my feet if I walk in them a lot, so I wore them with some very, very thin black socks.

I got cheese fries (I was hungry enough for a full meal, but wanted to save room for Food and Wine Festival). DD had chicken tenders, DM had nachos, DGA had a hamburger. All were good, not four star cuisine, but good.

We then hoofed it over to the bus stop. The SoG bus stop is downstairs from the lobby. When you first pull up to SoG to check in, you drive up a very slight incline. The bus stop is below the lobby and there is a little indoor area where you take steps down to a small snack shop (with tables and chairs) before going out to the covered area with benches to wait. The stairs have a great little waterfall there that I could just stand and listen to forever. It's all very pretty and lush.

Anywho, we grab the bus to the TTC and the monorail to Epcot.

It actually took us longer to get through the main gates this time than in the morning. My mom carried our only bag throughout the trip and that morning she had gone through the seperate bag check and met us just inside. This evening, they were doing bag checks at the turnstiles and it was all sorts of backed up.

We bee-lined to the Land Pavillion and I sacrificed myself for the herd by taking responsibility for all the tickets and going inside for more Soarin' FPs.

I was a little worried that they'd all be gone by this point, but they luckily weren't. I got four for 8:33 to 9:00.

Having accomplished the task, we headed for World Showcase.

Though I've been in October and November before, I don't rememeber ever seeing the F&W Festival before. Thanks to the Dis, I had printed out all the menus and was planning on hitting them hard.

Yeah, that didn't happen. Turns out the rest of the fam wasn't quite as into it as I and me wanting to wait in almost every food line was garnering a lot of rolled eyes. I got a couple of things, though. All good.

We turned right and headed into Canada. I got icewine from the Canadian F&W booth. Very small sample, but good.

DM got the honey and walnut baklava from the Greek booth. She said it was good, but not as good as the baklava she makes (it's one of her specialties).

We walked through the UK, but didn't stop for any food or shopping (though the fish and chips did temp me - long line!).

We also passed through France without shopping or eating. I know, it sounds horrible, but there were some crowds (not huge, but significant) and we were there mainly for the ambiance of WS at night. I had shopping plans, but they were limited to Morocco, Japan, China, and Mexico.

In Morocco I searched diligently for a not too expensive souvenier. They have tons of great clothes, but being a size 20 it wasn't feasible. They also have henna tattoing. I love henna tattoos, but I got one in Morocco last March and it wore off after a week.

I ended up purchasing a piece of papyrus for $10. I intend to use it in my living room once I get my own apartment.

DGA got herself a piece of pistachio baklava (baklava is big in our family) and deemed it good.

Next was Japan. I was looking forward to shopping here ever since I had heard of Lucky Cats over on the Parks and Attractions board (am I the only one who thinks we should have a seperate shopping board?).

The four of us meandered through the large department store for probably a good half an hour. I got some green tea incense and my Lucky Cat in purple. I think purple has something to do with creativity (I'll have to double check the little info sheet that came with it). Ringo (yes, I've named my Lucky Cat) is tiny, but oh so cute! My cat Sophie seems jealous, she tried to push Ringo to the ground with her paw, but I saved him just in time and moved him to higher ground.

I saw tons of other stuff there that I would have liked to buy (an entire room full of kitchenware - plates, bowls, etc. So pretty! They will be mine, oh yes, they will be mine), but was deterred by lack of money.

We next passed through the American Adventure. DD stopped for coffee and a danish at a regular Epcot stand (no F&W Fest affiliation).

The Beach Boys were playing and the place was packed. I love the Beach Boys, but we didn't stop to listen very long. We did hear the tail end of, what I'm going to call, Don't Worry Baby (don't know the actual name of that song) and the beginning of California Girls.

DGA wandered off into Italy during this and looked over a lot of chocolate, but we rolled into Germany without any Italian purchases.

We didn't shop in Germany (we had been stationed in East Germany from 1987 to 1990, so we have plenty of German stuff), but DM and DGA both got apple struedel from the F&W booth. Also very good. DGA claimed it as her favorite from the night.

We passed through the Outpost. We did notice a boy around 8 or so crouching down trying to catch a lizard. DD contemplated sneaking up behind him and scaring him, but thought better of it.

I had planned on shopping in China, but the rest of the group was tiring and ready to get a move on to the end of the evening.

I stopped at the F&W Fest booth and made my best purchase of the evening. Chicken Sha Cha Skewer with peanut sauce and a Green Tea and Plum Wine Cooler.

It started to rain while I was in line and I got the pleasure of watching the man in front of me attempt to put on a poncho. I know I'm a horrible person for not assisting him when he tried to put his head through an arm hole, but it was just too funny!

The chicken skewer had three or four decent sized pieces of meat with a liberal amount of peanut sauce. I love peanut sauce. And the wine cooler! Not only was it good, it was big. Or at least bigger than I was expecting. The cup was a regular plastic party cup filled to the top. I was drinking it for almost the rest of the night.

We hit Norway next. I love Laila perfume, but I rarely ever wear perfume so I can't bring myself to pay $50 for the smallest size bottle.

In Mexico, I stopped at the Argentinian booth and got a Spicy Beef Empanada. The beef was very good and well seasoned. The shell was a little hard, but still not that bad at all. I had planned on shopping in Mexico. I love the inside of that pavillion with its gorgeous night sky. But, again, antsy family.

DD and DM stopped in the store where FW and WS meet - Showcase Plaza, maybe? I don't know if there were any No Food Allowed Inside signs, but I waited until I had finished my empanada before going in. DGA wiped down a bench (it was still raining, but barely) and took a seat.

We didn't buy anything. I looked at some Tinkerbell earrings, but seeing the line, decided I'd get them at Studios on Wednesday.

We grabbed DGA and made our way back towards the Land Pavillion for our FPs. It was still 8:00. DM said that we should go in and see if they'd let us use them early, but I quickly told her there was no way that was going to happen.

The Seas with Nemo and Friends had no line so we jumped into the queue.

There are seagulls outside (Motion sensored? They seemed to only start up when people walked by) that go, "Mine, mine, mine!" This may have been my favorite part of the whole experience. The seagulls were DD's favorite characters in Finding Nemo and we were cracking up every time we heard them.

The queue for this attraction is excellent. It starts off with a beach motiff. The floors are made to look like you're walking on sand. Lighthouses, etc. You then work your way down into the water. The rails in that section look like metal that's been down under water for a long time, rusted with barnacles, etc. Above you, it was swirling water. Very cool. We boarded our clamshells (it's similiar to doom buggies on HM or time machines in SE).

While I liked this ride, I think it will become a smaller scale ride once the newness has worn off. It was very well themed and looked great, but I think I was expecting more. I was expecting a plot. I had read that Nemo is lost and you try to find him accompanied by Mr. Ray. The ride is, essentially, a series of screens depicting the characters from the movie going, "Nemo, where are you?" etc. with Nemo bounching in and out of the shots. The audience was never "involved" as I had expected.

I tried to determine if the voices were the same from the movie. Dory is def not Ellen DeGeneres, but I couldn't say for sure about the rest. The last part was very cool. You get to see into the actaul fish tanks and the Nemo characters are projected so they look like they are in the tanks, too. Awesome!

We still had about twenty minutes before our FPs were up, but decided to head over to the Land Pavillion anyway.

While we waited, DD and I wandered over to a tiny little stand just outside the Soarin' queue that was selling Soarin' merch. DD noticed that the CM working there was from Central Piedmont Community College (it said so on her name tag). CPCC is (unless something has changed since 2003) the largest community college in the East and is based out of Charlotte, NC. They have several campuses throughout Mecklenburg County. I spent four semesters there and did my college program through them.

I think her name was Kristen (I can't remember now). We talked for awhile and found out we had a lot in common. She lives in Chatham Square which is where I lived when I was a CP. She was planning on transferring from CPCC to the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and majoring in journalism. I had spent my first semester out of high school at UNCG before coming home and going to CPCC and had considered journalism as a possible major. Now I'm a college drop out. *sticks out lower lip*

She was very nice, but ride time was nearing! DD was standing right in front of the FP return clock waiting for it to tick over from 8:32 to 8:33. Goofball.

So we rode Soarin' and got in the first row this time. Great stuff. I still love smelling the pine and the orange groves. And I was able to see the Hidden Mickey on the golf ball. I've always known it was there, but can't get my eyes to focus on it fast enough to actually make it out as a Mickey.

We exited just as Illuminations was starting. We had decided earlier that we weren't interested in seeing Illuminations.

I've only seen it once and it was a good show, but I don't feel a need to see it again. I'm only 5'2" so it's hard for me to see if I don't want to stake out prime real estate for hours. Plus, being overweight, my feet have a hard time standing for that long. Next May if the big group wants to see it, I'll be glad to see it with them, but for the most part it's skippable.

For the record, I will watch SpectroMagic and Wishes at MK because I can grab some curb space on Main St to watch the parade and can easily see Wishes up in the sky regardless of the height of the person in front of me.

We exited and waited for our monorail. Since there were so few people waiting, I asked if we could ride of front and was given a yes!

DGA absolutely loved it! "Gee whiz!" were her exact words. But our driver never spoke to us! I forgave him later because it was the end of the day and he looked like he had had a long one. Plus, these were four adults ranging in age from 23 to 70 something. Still, it would have been nice if he had engaged us.

We caught the bus back to SoG.

I didn't have the energy to shower and fell into bed. Then, realizing that it wasn't quite 10 pm yet, I turned the TV on to NBC where I caught the tail end of Heroes (I love Hiro with a passion - he's so cute!) and watched my new favorite show, Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip. I'm a very dedicated Aaron Sorkin fan and I've been with him since Sports Night. Loyalty!

I don't think I saw the credits at the end of the show, I fell asleep so fast.

Tomorrow - Sea World reminds me why I love WDW so much.

Day 3 - SeaWorld

Visiting SeaWorld was DM's idea. I would have much preferred MK, but seeing as I didn't want to do it alone...

I awoke at 7 am on the dot, showered, dressed, and got another chai tea latte along with my sausage, egg, and cheese croissant from the Express Cafe by the bus stop. Yummy.

DD spent the day watching golfers. I believe this was the day that DGA stood in line for her coffee behind Vijay Sing (at the hotel, before his tee time) and had no idea. DD was very jealous.

DM, DGA, and I bought our SeaWorld tickets at 8:30 am and drove over to SeaWorld. Parked and were inside at around 9:15.

Though I'm a very thorough WDW planner, I had done no SeaWorld planning (I know, slap me on the hand!) so our first issue was to grab a map (they have show times on the back) and plan the beginning of our day.

There was a showing of Clyde and Seamore at 10, so we booked it for the Sea Lion and Otter Stadium.

This show has two sea lions (Clyde and Seamore) and an otter (though the otter's role is minimal - poor guy) with a walrus at the end. There are three human trainers/"actors" that accompany them. It was corny, but fun. There were plenty of "mistakes" and a couple of audience volunteers. My favorite part was the pirate mime at the beginning who entertained as people were coming in. What can I say, I like mimes. At one point he saw a little girl come in with a WDW back pack on. He pointed at it and then rubbed his fingers together to symbolize that WDW is expensive. I resisted the urge to shout, "Yeah, but it's worth it!"

The show was about half an hour long and afterwards, we headed straight for the Seaport Theater to see Pets Ahoy!

This show had been my parents' favorite when they had gone to SeaWorld. It's indoors and is cats, dogs, a few birds, and a pig - all rescued from local shelters - that have been trained to do little stunts, etc. Very cute stuff. Like a dog that is having problems with his girlfriend. He goes over to a phone, takes it off the hook, hits the numbers with his paw and then barks to "sweet talk" her, then goes to get her some flowers, etc, before jumping in his jeep to pick her up. But I was really impressed with the cats. I don't know how they train cats to do some of the stuff they did.

By now we were hungry so we walked just next door to Voyagers Wood Fired Pizza. Even though it opened at 11 am and Pets Ahoy! was a 25 minute show starting at 10:45, they weren't ready yet.

So we moved on to the Spice Mill Cafe. DM and I both had the carribbean jerk chicken sandwich with fries (which were very good) and DGA had a steak and cheese sandwich with fries.

After lunch we decided to see Odyssea - an indoor stage show. It was okay. I think between Festival of the Lion King and La Nouba, I'm spoiled because this just didn't float my boat. By the end of it I was almost asleep and my butt hurt from the metal bleachers.

Since I was hitting a low point energy-wise, I decided it was a good time to go on Kraken.

This is where the noticable differences between WDW and SeaWorld came to a head. Don't get me wrong, I generally enjoyed SeaWorld - it's better than my local amusement park, Carowinds - but it just doesn't stand up.

I think Kraken is supposed to be a sea serpent of some kind, but there was absolutely no theming on this ride to really indicate that. The queue had no theming at all and the coaster itself if just a regular outdoor coaster.

One of the things that helps WDW move their lines quicker is having CMs ask for group sizes and then distributing them before you get on a ride. Kraken didn't have this, you just wandered to where you wanted to sit and many people were just milling around. There was also no singles line which would have been great for me.

There were only running one vehicle so the wait was a little longer than the posted 15 minutes.

In terms of thrills, the ride itself was very fun. It's one of those floorless coasters where your feet dangle and that's always fun for me. It was very fast and while not my favorite coaster (that would be RnR), I enjoyed it.

Afterwards, I met up with DGA and DM at a gift shop where DM bought a Quiksilver t-shirt for me brother.

I had decided to wear flip flops this day and my heels were killing me by this point. We were all kind of tired from Epcot the previous day, so we decided to put a cap on the day soon.

We grabbed some vanilla soft serve. I got sprinkles, DM got hot fudge, DGA got strawberries. Good stuff.

We walked to the Key West section of SeaWorld (with Jimmy Buffet playing) for some shopping. Didn't buy anything, but I did stop in a bathroom that was very clean.

Just outside the shop there was a stingray exhibit where you could feed them and touch them. I didn't buy any food to feed them with, but I did stick my hands in. They felt smooth and slimy, but there wasn't any slime when I brought my hands out. I think this was actually my favorite part of the day - simple pleasures, huh?

We went into one more shop where DM got a hat and a t-shirt for our neighbor Jan who watched our cats for us.

Overall impressions of SeaWorld: I now wished we'd looked at more of the exhibits and "encounters." It was fun, but I would have preferred a day at Magic Kingdom or Animal Kingdom. I'd go again if others wanted to go, but I don't need to go.

We left and decided to explore, looking for the house we'll stay in during our trip next May.

We now interrupt this TR to bring you a preview of next May's Pre-TR

Every May for the past four years, my extended family rents a house on North Carolina's Hattaras Island for a week. Lots of Mudslides are consumed and fun is had by all. Next year we will be going to WDW instead. This was, of course, my idea. We had intended on all staying at Shades of Green (besides my dad, we have three other family members who have been in the military), but they were all booked up. Since we always share a house at the beach, DM decided we'd rent a vacation home for WDW as well. It's cheaper and we'll all have a small pool all to ourselves. Plus a kitchen and large dining table. It'll be my family of four, two aunts, two uncles, two cousins, two cousins' significant others, and two cousin's offspring - one 7 mos old and the other a month short of 4 years. Technically we're hoping that one of the cousins' significant other won't be coming because he's a Not Very Nice Person of the Cheating variety, but we'll see.

Back to your regularly scheduled TR

We found the place and I attempted to memorize directions from I-4. I've still got them in my head, but I should probably write them down soon before I lose them.

Up next - dinner at House of Blues!

After searching for our future vacation home, we jumped back over to WDW and get back to SoG.

DGA, DM and I briefly hit our rooms to freshen up (i.e. pee) before heading down to Evergreens for some chill time. We drank lots of iced tea (unsweetened, thank you) and chatted about who knows what for at least an hour.

It was during this time that DM said we weren't going to be watching Fantasmic! tomorrow. What?! This was news to me. Turns out DM figured we wouldn't watch it because last March when we came, we weren't able to get out of Studios for a break (too much stuff to do!) and were exhausted by the time Fantasmic! came about. DM's theory - no Fantasmic!, take our time at Studios, don't worry about trying to take a break.

Urgh.

I love Fantasmic! but was unwilling to sit and watch it by myself. This, by the way, is a huge change from when I was working at Studios. I used to spend entire days touring the park alone and would often go to see movies at DTD alone.

So I was a little grumpy. I've since moved on, but it was a long, tough road to recovery.

From there on, we spent most of the rest of the afternoon/early evening in our rooms. I for one relaxed in bed with my portable DVD player and the fourth season of Scrubs. Good stuff!

Determined to spend some more time at DTD (can I live there? please?) DM and I convinced DD (who would have been content just staying in) to go to out for dinner at House of Blues.

We drove over around 6 pm and parked on the West Side. We were seated at House of Blues in less than 5 minutes.

I love this restaurant. It's probably my favorite of all the restaurants I've been to in WDW. I love the atmosphere, I love the music that plays outside, the art and other decor inside. The food's good, too. I would love to live in a home that looked like this.

I had the chicken tenders with fries and (more) tea. The chicken came with a couple of different sauces including one that was a marmalade of some sort and spicy. Very good.

DD had a chicken caesar salad, DM had a shrip caesar salad, DGA had the shrimp po' boy with fries. All good stuff.

And then came dessert. DM and I split the bread pudding w/vanilla sauce. So good. I highly reccomend it, though it is very big. Even with the two of us eating, we weren't able to finish it. DD had the triple chocolate cake with vanilla ice cream. DD lives for chocolate - yeah, he was def. able to finish it.

DD has a bit of a stick up his bum and said that House of Blues was too busy. And not with people, just with stuff on the walls, etc. Doesn't he understand that that's what makes it so awesome?! Oh well.

After eating, we went right over to the HoB company store and spent about 20 min - half an hour there. I, finally, bought some of the Nag Champa incense that they sell there. If you've ever been in this store and wandered what that smell was (in a good way!), it's Nag Champa. More room smells like this now and it reminds me of DTD every time I walk in there. I also bought a leather bracelet that has the words Hurt Never, Help Ever (or possibly the other way around) embroidered in red on it. I also got two t-shirts that were 2 for $30.

I walked over to the Virgin Megastore next. When I was a CP at WDW, my major expenses were as follows: rent, groceries (and fast food), Virgin Megastore. I spent hours in there sometimes. I especially liked buying things that were on sale because then you get a sticker that says, "Virgin On Sale $9.99" That trend was started by a male co-worker of mine over at the Honey, I Shrunk the Kids Playground. Ah, memories.

I didn't buy anything, I just needed a few minutes to be there and remember.

We got back into the car and drove over to Marketplace. We seriously wouldn't have had a problem walking, but we wanted to drop off the food and then considered the fact that we were pretty tired. Walking to Marketplace might have been no problem, but by the time we were going to walk back to the car on West Side, we would have been exhausted.

I had spilled sauce on my shirt during dinner (I'm a constant source of amusement for my family in this respect - rarely does a meal go by where I don't spill something on myself) so I changed into one of my new HoB t-shirts.

I went directly to the Christmas store to try to get an embroidered Minnie hat for a co-worker of mine. But they only had Minnie hats in infant sizes and I would have had to wait over an hour for the embroidery to be completed. I decided that it just wasn't in the cards for me that night. I'd try again tomorrow at Studios and if I couldn't get it there, I'd come back to DTD before we left for home.

It was packed in that store, so I didn't bother looking around for anything additional. I now wish I'd bought a Christmas ornament.

We also browsed in the scrapbooking store. I've never been a scrapbooker (though I do love to put together picture albums), but I'm planning to put together a big one for our family trip next May so it was cool to look around.

We crossed over into the art store next. There were some great pieces of art there. I spent a couple minutes in front of a painted canvas of the Evil Queen from Snow White. Three thousand, five hundred dollars. *sigh* I would have loved that! I also checked out the trivia board in that store. This was also a favorite past time of my friends and I during my CP. I don't remember the questions now (they were quotes - you had to name the character who said it), but I got 4 out of 5. Yay me!

DD spent some time in Team Mickey's looking at golf attire, but by now feet were sore, stomachs were full and it was nearing...9 pm. Where has my youth gone that I'm that tired that early?

We drove back to SoG and fell into bed. I was asleep just before 10 pm with visions of Disney-MGM Studios dancing in my head. Tomorrow - you're only a day away!

Day 4

My abandoned TR. So sorry, RL (aka Real Life) caught up with me. But I still have one full day of Disney magic to cover before this TR is done with.

Wednesday was our Disney-MGM Studios day. So it's time for my Ode to Studios.

Well, there's not an actual Ode. But I do love the Studios. It's been my favorite park since my first trip and has remained so over the past 10 years. I'm a movie nut and this place is just a huge playground for me. It's where I worked when I did my CP and it's my Disney home. You know how most Disney fans get the warm, fuzzy feeling in their stomachs when they see Cinderella's Castle or Main Street? For me it's Sunset Boulevard and the Tower of Terror.

Anyway...I didn't take notes this day. Mostly because I thought I trusted myself to remember. Which I shouldn't have done, I have a horrible memory. Also, because I was slightly depressed. Not only was this our last day, but Studios always leaves me a little off. Last March I started crying on the bus back to SoG after my day at Studios. I think it's because I miss it so much and because I have such great memories of the friends and acquaintences that I met here and whom I never get to see any more. Luckily, in the time since I last updated this TR, I've found two of them on myspace. I'm also not used to having to rush around the parks (any of the parks) because I spent four months living there non-stop. "That lines too long? Bah! I can come back tomorrow!"

What I do remember is that we got there early enough that the rope hadn't dropped yet. We had to wait outside the turnstiles for a bit before we got in and then we waited behind the rope.

Back outside at the turnstiles, a horrible thing happened. A protein spill.

I'm sure it was much, much worse for the poor little girl who was sick (probably only about 3 years old), but this is my TR. I'm emetophobic - before you leave me to go check google, emetophobia is fear of vomit. There are a couple of different forms of it and mine has gotten better over the years (there was a time when I had to fast forward through about 20 minutes of Apollo 13 because I wasn't quite sure where the vomit was and I didn't want to chance it), but still pretty bad when it's in person.

I was a little naseous the rest of the day.

After getting in, we were held up by the rope right where Hollywood and Sunset meet. DM, DGA and I browsed in the little shop right there on the corner. Didn't buy anything at the time, but I did see a great gift for my best friend Jenni. She's obsessed with mermaids and The Little Mermaid is her favorite movie, so I (later) got her a beanie/stuffed Ariel doll. It says it's a beanie, but most of it was stuffed.

And now it's 6:28 am and time for me to leave work and head home. To be continued!

Day 4 cont.

After the rope drop I high tailed it over to the Tower of Terror. ToT is my, hands down, favorite ride at WDW. Last time my brother and I were in WDW together was our 2000 trip. I was 17 and he was 15. We had a whole day to ourselves to do whatever we wanted...we spent it on ToT. Well, we did go on Star Tours once and RnR twice. But we hit ToT 15 times!

Meanwhile, in 2006...DM and DGA sat that one out and chilled on a bench. Right afterward I grabbed two Fastpasses for ToT with two of our tickets and then hit RnR ("Wait a minute. I love that idea"). And got one more Fastpass for RnR.

Visiting WDW with non-thrill riders:
Riding thrill rides alone -1
Using their tickets for Fastpasses +1

It all evens out!

Thrill rides aside, we were off. I stopped at the sorcerer hat to get some Minnie ears for my co-worker Janet and then walked them down the the Five and Dime for embroidery. Done and done!

Our next stop was the Great Movie Ride. I'm a sucker for any and all montages, so this is one of my favorites. Don't get me wrong, I love the animatronics (though Sigourney Weaver could use a bit of an update), but it's the clips at the end that make me tear up every time.

I got a little scared on this one because we were in the front row and I was all the way over to the side where the driver is. Didn't want to get picked on by the cowboy/gangster (we had the gangster). Luckily, he left me alone.

So, yes, I cried a litte, but I had to get over it because it was time for Star Tours.

I think DM and DGA could have handled it, but I don't think they trusted me. I had heard that there was one ride vehicle whose back row didn't move during the ride, so I asked the greeter CM. Apparently, I heard wrong. But, it was still very early there was no one in line. The greeter said that she could arrange for us to take a non-bumpy flight. She made a phone call and then told us to go up the handicapped lane.

I don't know if I picked the wrong lane or if a CM rotation went through, but the CM's were clueless when I got up there. But again, they were slow, so we were set!

We had to wait for a vehicle to be ready. We were on the right hand side and there was nobody else over there, so maybe they didn't have any of those vehicles running. While we waited, we got the word's happiest CM. I wish I had remembered his name. He was obviously a CP, probably around 18 or 19 and he had definately had his Wheaties and 20 cups of coffee that morning. He was bouncing off the walls! Luckily, in a funny, nice way not in an annoying, obnoxious way.

The three of us boarded for our flight in the front rows. Seatbelts - even though it wasn't moving. They enjoyed it, but it was just alright for me. Not so much because the lack of movement, but because we were on it alone. I know everyone always wishes for smaller crowds or to have the parks by themselves, but I don't think it would be quite the same. It's fun to hear other people's reactions.

Muppetvision 3D was next on the schedule. We were pretty much working our way around the park in a circle.

I absolutely adore Muppetvision 3D. As much as I enjoyed doing my college program, I was incredibly homesick while I there. But there were a few fail safe things that would cheer me up. Muppetvision 3D was one of them.

We were lucky enough to walk in just after the pre-show started. I grabbed a seat on a "box" on the left hand side of the room and tried to keep DM and DGA in my peripheral vision. After losing DD and DM in WoD, I didn't need a repeat experience.

God, I love this show. I love seeing it with little kids when they try to reach out for the bubbles. I also love Sweetums.

I had planned on shopping for some Muppet stuff, but there really wasn't all that much in the shop afterward. There were some t-shirts, but none that would fit me. I was also hoping to get some of the Muppet Show episodes that I saw there last time I was in WDW, but they were gone. Another reason why, if you see something you want - buy it!

DM refused to sit through another showing of Indiana Jones' Epic Stunt Spectacular. It's one of DD's favorites so we always watch it, but DM has had her fill.

We also weren't interested in Lights! Motors! Action! I started working at the Backlot Tour right after it came up from it's 2004 refurb to make room for LMA. Every guest I talked to was very, very disappointed that the Golden Girls house had been torn down. I tried to remember another facade that was on the tour, but never could (until I searched on the internet).

I stopped off for a pretzel and we grabbed a seat (and a bathroom break) before we went on the Backlot Tour.

Actually, we did stop briefly at the Honey, I Shrunk the Kids Playground. HISK was my first job at WDW (pre-Backlot). DM and DGA tried to get me inside, but it didn't take. I can't stand that place.

We had a few minutes wait in the Backlot Tour (about 6 minutes if I remember right - we walked in just as the video was starting). It was a little odd for me as I've forgotten almost all of the spiel.

Brief Overview of How to Work at WDW Attractions
All of the attractions work on a rotation. All of the CMs who work that particular attraction know how to do every job in the attraction. When you clock into CDS (Cast Deployment System) at the computer, you click on a button that says Get Assignment and it prints out a little slip of paper. You will either get a rotation, bump someone out, or get a task. If you get a rotation, you have to head to the first position in the attraction (in the Playground it's the net/spiderweb) and everybody else moves up one. The person at the end goes back to the computer to get another assignment. If you bump someone, you take over thier position so that can go on break, lunch, or go home. If it's not time for a rotation and nobody needs to get bumped, you get a task. Tasks are small things to keep you busy for 15 minutes. In Area 6 of Studios, it's stuff like sweeping Mickey Ave or straightening chairs at the Studio Catering Company. You can't hang out in the breakroom during a task because if a manager drops in, you're screwed. But they don't keep track of whether you're actually doing the task assigned to you. Popular "tasks" - visiting a friend in the general vicinity who you know is working, visiting Mickey on Mickey Ave (sweet, sweet air conditioning!). If my feet were really sore, I'd take a 15 minute break in the bathroom. Once you've been there awhile, you can figure out the patterns and avoid rotations and bumps. I once tasked for an hour and a half. Nice!

Backlot Tour - Tank doesn't work on CDS. Backlot Tour is broken into two attractions (for our purposes only) - Tank and Trams. I worked Tank, which is the Special Effects Water Tank preshow area. Instead of working off of CDS, we ran a manual rotation. Once you clocked in, you would start off an immediate rotation on the next show. Spieler (the person with the largest amount of spiel in the show), then Assistant. Assistant preps the volunteers and then introduces them during the show. After that, you have Dresser 1 and Dresser 2 (which can be combined into Dresser 12 if you're short staffed). Dresser 1 mainly waits for the volunteers to get back to the cabana, sizes them up and starts handing out rain gear. Dresser 2 goes up to Photocell (up where you have to stop at the top of the ramp before entering for the show) to help that CM stop the flow of traffic entering the show (depending on how many trams are running, you can only let so many guests in and it's often pretty tough to get four lanes of people to stop) and choose four volunteers. Photocell cleans water off of the front row so nobody slips, delivers a bit of spiel about no smoking, etc., runs the overheard video and then lets people in when the next show is ready. It's called Photocell because when you enter the show, you are electronically counted so we know how many people are entering. Photocell has to keep an eye on those numbers and watch for wheelchairs. If more than 5 wheelchairs or ECVs come in, Photocell has to call down to Tram to give them a head's up. Photocell also has to write down the time of each show start and how many people entered for that show on a clipboard. Anytime Tram adds or drops a tram, they call up to Photocell and make them aware so that info can also be added to the clipboard and the CM knows how many people to allow in. Greeter stands at the front and greets, gives directions, answers questions and parks strollers.

And then it's breaktime. A whole rotation takes about an hour. After your rotation, you break for two shows (3 for lunch) and then jump back in. Our breakroom is right behind the blue sky backdrop of the tank so we can keep an ear out for our cue to get ready. Depending on lunches and how many people are working, sometimes you get a longer break/lunch and sometimes you're stuck in rotation for awhile (I once did Spieler six times in a row), but other than being out in the heat and humidity, it's a pretty enjoyable job.

Don't know why I felt the need to ramble so long, but there you go.

So we did Backlot Tour. I saw my old manager's trailer - always entertaining to me.

Were the world perfect we would have done Who Wants to be a Millionaire - Play It! next. I loved that attraction, but we came too late. I miss it.

We were starving at this point so we headed straight for The Hollywood Brown Derby. This is a favorite of DM and myself, so we try to hit if for lunch whenever we're there. Never needed and ADR. We all got the Cobb salad, but I forgot that I don't like bleu cheese and didn't eat much of mine. :sad1:

We talked about going backwards to see One Man's Dream and The Adventures of the Little Mermaid, but we never did make it.

We had to get to the Beauty and the Beast show!

I will admit, while I do like this show, I love Four For a Dollar more. If you haven't seen them, Four For a Dollar is a four man a cappella group that sings before the Beauty and the Beast show. I became a major groupie of theirs during my CP. They start about 20 minutes before the main show and I had to get some strawberry ice cream at Hollywood Scoops beforehand. Tradition.

The show was great, as usual. I saw this show often enough back in 2004 that I had a favorite dancer, but I didn't see him this time. Hopefully, it was just his day off or something.

After the show I decided to use my Fastpasses. I went on RnR first (alone) and then ToT (alone). There was no line at all on ToT so they didn't bother to collect my Fastpass. I went again (alone), but still no Fastpass collection. Cool!

But, by this point I was tired of riding rides by myself.

The three of us started walking towards the exit and I attempted to pick up the embroidered Minnie ears.

Easier said than done.

Turns out my ears had been placed on the wrong shelf (they arrange them in alphabetical order by last name) and it took a good 20 minutes for them to find mine.

After Minnie ears were in hand, I had to make a U-turn and head back to RnR. There's a little cart in the couryard there that sells, amongst other things, pins. I had seen a circular black pin with a green Mickey head on it. Not lime, but close enough. I had to have it and I had forgotten earlier.

Not-quite-lime-green-mickey-head pin was my last Disney purchase.

The sun was melting me at this point and we exited the park and plopped down at the SoG bus stop.

My final chapter - Our last night and going home.

I just found this TR in your signature. I love it! I really love hearing the CM side of things... much fun!:thumbsup2

Are you going to finish it? I noticed it's been a while...:confused3

Oh.. and did you ever get any pictures to go along with this!?

I'm so slack. Where is my "ashamed" smilie? :o Close enough. I'm glad you enjoyed the CM stuff. I'm never really sure if anyone cares about that stuff, but I really miss it and sometimes I just start launching into it.

As far as pictures, I have a few, but... I have an old hand-me-down digital camera but I barely know how to use it. Apparently, my knowledge of technology stopped a couple of years ago. The pictures that I do have are still trapped in my disposable camera. I'm not much of a photographer so I took a few pics and then the camera was stuck in a drawer. Now I have to use up the last of that film so I can get it developed.

I will now attempt to piece together my last Disney day from what I can remember.
