I have been in the audience 9 times. Going is 90% of the fun. My first time was when Bob Barker was still the host. He was okay, I know he was very popular. He just didn't have a love of the contestants as Drew has towards the audience.
I've NEVER been picked. It is because of my job; I try to hide what I do, but they ask questions and I can't lie. I work in entertainment and we are never picked.
It is a long day that starts early. Each person has forms to fill out and then you wait. And then they take your lunch order (about $10 per person) if you want to eat. You are each interviewed by the producer and this is the moment to shine. You want to be active, quick on your answers and just be genuine. They tend to have a set list of "types" they pick: an elderly person, one or two people from a large group, a military person, someone with a funny shirt, a crazy loud person, two people from the mid-west, and then an average mom or dad-type. They pick nine people to contestants row throughout the game.
It is LOUD once the show starts. You can't hear much and with all of the stage hands and cameras, you sometimes can't see the game. They have monitors, so that is why when you watch the show and they cut to the audience, everyone is looking up.
Anyway, Drew really LOVES his guests and takes time between games to talk with the audience and he comes across as really wanting the people to win. I felt with Bob Barker, that he just wanted the whole thing over so he could get back to his golf game. He wasn't very welcoming at all. Drew practices his stand-up during the show.
I would advise going during a "special" show. Mother's Day, Father's Day, July 4th, etc. They tend to give our audience prizes for those shows.
