The Pope is coming.....

Live and work in NYC and am totally prepping for MAJOR gridlock. I'm 38 weeks pregnant today and my hospital is out in NJ. Just hoping that the little one does not decide today or tomorrow is the best time to make her appearance in the world. Not sure how long it would actually take to get over the GW Bridge before Saturday!

Celibacy. Just like priests aren't supposed to engage in any sexual activity with another person. Plenty of people lead asexual lives.

Well we've seen how well priests have been doing with that rule. I'm not sure I'd say "plenty of people."

It is no different than a heterosexual couple abstain from sex. Homosexuality is not about sex. It's about who you are attracted to. There are homosexual virgins same as there are heterosexual ones. Not really that difficult if a concept to grasp unless you don't want to.

Not saying I disagree but how is that even possible? Do you know of any homosexuals who are not engaging in homosexual sex? Doesn't compute.

Well I generally don't make it my business to ascertain if homosexuals are engaging or not, I would venture to say, as another poster said, that if a devout Catholic homosexual seriously ascribed to the views of the church, they would abstain.

Yes but heterosexual couples may abstain from sex for a period of time but they aren't going to remain virgins for life. C'mon!

True. For the majority of people, not being able to have sexual relations is a quality of life issue. That's why we have little blue pills for men. For homosexuals who are devout Catholics, I am sure that this is a horrible thing to deal with; hence, you have suicides and "fake" heterosexual marriages. And to think, there are some that believe this is a choice.

Male attracted to other males. Gay pornography (or his imagination). Self love.

Perhaps it's another sin, but it's not engaging in homosexual activity according to the Catholic church.

OMG-just go to a nearby hospital if she comes early!!!

Now I'm hearing reports of Papal Price Gouging in Philadelphia. Restaurants, Dunkin Donuts, etc. raising their prices even before he arrives. I'm sure hotels jacked up their rates for this weekend long in advance.

if you stay in upscale Hotels they list their "rate" on the door-its ALWAYS way more than you are paying
It is the "Highest" rate the hotel can charge for that room.....this happens in NO for Mardi Gras.

In "the olden days" like 30 years plus ago, there was always one boy that the Irish catholic family decided would become the priest. Usually he was the soft spoken, sweet, effeminate one. Having a son as a priest was as prideful as having a doctor in the family. It was a win-win situation. Now that homosexuality is no longer considered abnormal, the number of men going into the priesthood has fallen dramatically. Same situation for nuns. Thankfully now, many people do not have to hide behind the cloth. Intelligence is slowly winning over a few sentences in a book written thousands of years ago.

I find that kind of insulting to all the thousand of men and women who have faithfully lived up to their vow of chastity. You paint with a pretty broad stroke.

I wasn't trying to paint a broad stroke. Was just inferring to one certain type that used to be attracted to the priesthood.

I've spent more than my share of time as a celibate heterosexual. It wasn't for lack of trying I must say.

My dad had all brothers in a very devout, Irish Catholic family. Nary a Priest among them. And they all graduated school in the 40's so the time frame you are talking about. HIS mom had 6 brothers. Nope, no Priests there either. And a few of them never married. Possibly they were gay? I have no clue but no Priests.

I did get a chuckle when AnnaFloridaLover said that the "olden days" were like 30 plus years ago. :teeth: Thirty plus years started in 1985!!! I do think though there was that trend in some areas--maybe more Italian. But it's probably mostly a stereotype. I think of Saturday Night Fever where John Travolta's older brother was a priest. They were very proud of that.

In many old-time ethnic neighborhoods, Irish, Italian, Polish, etc., having a priest in the family was a major source of pride and a bit of a status symbol. Sort of like how some parents are proud when their children become doctors or lawyers.
