The Pope is coming.....

In "the olden days" like 30 years plus ago, there was always one boy that the Irish catholic family decided would become the priest. Usually he was the soft spoken, sweet, effeminate one. Having a son as a priest was as prideful as having a doctor in the family. It was a win-win situation. Now that homosexuality is no longer considered abnormal, the number of men going into the priesthood has fallen dramatically. Same situation for nuns. Thankfully now, many people do not have to hide behind the cloth. Intelligence is slowly winning over a few sentences in a book written thousands of years ago.
Lordy- what a stereotype LOL... Ridiculous to think only homosexuals went into the priesthood, IMO
My brother went into the priesthood....it wasn't the family deciding it
And yes it WAS a source of pride for my parents

And when he left the priesthood we all supported him then also
(added-he is now happily married with a son (my "genius" nephew at Carnegie-Melon )and 4 great step-kids that he helped raise)

Holy stereotypes Batman!

I did get a chuckle when AnnaFloridaLover said that the "olden days" were like 30 plus years ago. :teeth: Thirty plus years started in 1985!!! I do think though there was that trend in some areas--maybe more Italian. But it's probably mostly a stereotype. I think of Saturday Night Fever where John Travolta's older brother was a priest. They were very proud of that.
MTE LOL

I'm 50 and come from a large Irish/Italian Catholic family, grew up in a area that was mostly Catholic. There aren't any priests in my family and none in my neighborhood as a kid.

I do have a gay cousin in his 60s. But he works in construction.

Pictures from the festivities.

Holy guacamole, there are a lot of people here. lol. security has not been bad at all. Ok what is with the South Americans and chanting. they are doing it here also. definitely going to be a couple of 100,000 folks by the time the parade starts. Very easy to maneuver though, totally ready to eat humble pie. the city made the correct call in closing the streets. makes getting around much more easy. every street is a gigantic walkway.

Security lines noon this afternoon. 7 hours before parade starts

Everybody and their mama is selling Pope memorabilia

crowds around city hall, lined up along the parade route

Multicultural event. I've heard more languages I didn't recognize than ever in my life

Many of the streets have jumbo trons set up.

I'm going to respectfully request that those of you who think that everyone on the entire planet knows what "get out of dodge" means to take a step back and understand that not everyone knows all of the slang terms/statements in the English language.

Please be respectful toward each other.

Thanks and carry on...

Respectfully, I would have handled a foreign slang term on a message board a bit differently. If I had read a statement that was obviously a foreign slang term that I did not understand, my first post afterwards would have asked for clarification of the meaning of the term and then I would have made the decision of whether or not the poster was disparaging the pope. It would not be attacking somebody for what I assumed the term meant. I also would have googled the term to make sure I was reading the post correctly. Googling the term brings up numerous definitions like the one from dictionary.com: "to depart a location."

I am sorry you are getting negative responses.

Love this Pope. He almost makes me want to rejoin the Catholic religion.

I found this when I googled the term:

http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=get+the+hell+out+of+dodge

I saw a eagles jersey with the Popes face over the quarterback's face

I'm not sure if you're referring to this. I saw this T-shirt at Boscov's early in the summer and got one for DH around Labor Day. But I doubt even His Holiness could help the Iggles this year.

But the Jumbotrons are only on the streets lined with Porto-Pots. :rolleyes2

As Yakov Smirnoff used to say, "America, what a country."

lol

final pics. I'm not hanging out with the masses today. these are from last night. I tried to get a picture of the pope in the pope mobile. that sucker goes a lot faster than it looks on tv.

festival of families concert

I thought the Popemobile was motoring last night, not like it has inched along before. Maybe they were behind schedule??? I know the rearranged the concert lineup last night

SNF was the first thing that came to my mind when reading that post. His mother was so proud to have a son who was a priest! It was such a status symbol for her. The movie gave the impression that the poor guy became a priest due to pressure from the mother, rather than a spiritual calling. And no, he wasn't gay

I will show the pope the exact same respect that I show every old man walking or driving down the street. No more, no less. My prerogative to not put him or any other world religious or political leader on a pedestal.
As it should be...I'm sure he would agree. He (or any other Pope) is first and foremost a pastor, then a teacher and evangelist - NOT a rock star.

Relenting on homosexuality being a sin doesn't automatically mean he's the greatest pope ever.
Granted, I'm a member of a protestant church now but I have deep Catholic roots, and I try to keep current. I clearly missed this memo though. Is he re-writing the rest of the Bible too?

I'm not a Catholic, but I both admire and appreciate his stance on humility. That's a trait that is both lacking and valuable to all of humanity, no matter your race or creed. If we were all a little more humble with our fellow man it might help eliminate some conflict.
Agree - see above.

Watching this coverage is making me wish I were downtown today. Pope Francis is a rockstar.
No, he's not, and I'd like to think he'd shudder at the suggestion.
