The Poly as a DVC Moderate

I have stayed at the Poly many times, and I don't think it is considered a moderate level hotel. The Disney world web page lists the following as deluxe resorts: Animal Kingdom, Polynesian, Grand Floridian, Wilderness lodge, beach club, boardwalk, Contemporary, and Yacht club. The web page lists moderate resorts as Caribbean beach, Port Orleans, Coronado, and the cabins at fort wilderness resort.

Although it's my least favorite Deluxe that I've stayed at, I've never thought of the Poly as a moderate. Standard view rooms run from $483 to $760 for 2015. Comparing to Beach Club - $400 to $672. You're dreaming if you think the studio points will be less than existing DVC.

I think the question should be rephrased. It is not a question of the Polynesian becoming a moderate, but, rather, if the Polynesian is a value as a timeshare.

If one plans on purchasing a minimum number of points (e.g., 160) and financing @ 10.25% for 10 years, I do not see how yearly stays at the Polynesian would be advantageous.

With a travel party of 3-4 adults, I would rather book a traditional room at a deluxe because you would get 2 queens and a daybed. Plus, the cash room refurbishment schedule seems better than our DVC schedule.

I know the Poly certainly has its fan following, and I suspect deservedly so, but hasn’t the Poly always been considered the monorail moderate by Disney standards? As such, with debates of the possibility of a Caribbean Beach DVC and if DVC could or would do a moderate class resort, with the Poly being 95% studios, doesn’t that make it the first attempt at being a DVC Moderate?
No, it's always been considered a Deluxe from what I know. Back in the old days of the Disney Collection DVC grouped the resorts as followed which matched their internal grading of the resorts from what I'm told. Here is the list with a single points total to give a comparison (weekend Magic)

  1. GF 78
  2. CR Tower rooms, YC/BC, Poly 71
  3. CR wings, WL 68
  4. Moderates 45
Early on it was run of the resort rooms but later usually the basic room options that fit the category. Historically the Poly has had the highest % of repeat guests but I haven't seen anything lately that addresses that issue, maybe someone else has more recent information.

Historically, the Polynesian is the only monorail resort not to be marketed as Walt Disney World's flagship resort. When Disney's Grand Floridian Resort & Spa opened, in 1988, Disney's Contemporary Resort passed the baton.

Disney's Polynesian was second to Disney's Contemporary. Current maintenance and theming aside, Disney's Polynesian would now be third if the past flagship is slotted into the number two spot.

I was all set to buy at Poly, but now I'm having second thoughts.

I grew up staying at the Poly (the only other option was the Contemporary). It's where DH and I have stayed with our kids many times. It's a resort we all love.

If the price is $180/pt, I'm not sure we'd do it. Plus, we are now spoiled by staying in 1BR units at BLT (where we own). I'm not a fan of BLT's theming, but the location (walk to MK) and size of the 1BR is great for us. At Poly, I know we would want the connecting studios or bungalow. I wonder how hard it will be to book there if it isn't our home resort?...

I'm seriously considering keeping our BLT points (which we were planning on doing anyway) and paying cash to stay at Poly if that's where we want to stay. If we stay at the Poly every other trip, I think we would still spend less than if we buy in at $180/pt. (I was thinking we'd buy around 250/300pts depending on the pts. per night to allow us to book 2 studios).

Any thoughts?
