I have read through most of the articles about tripods on this forum. I have done extensive research on the net concerning tripods but I still can’t find the answer that I am looking for. So, I figurer that the only way to get that answer I am looking for is to ask the question myself.

Does anyone make a good, sturdy tripod that will extend to about 60 inches but will also fold up to around 18 inches that I can use with my Nikon D200. The largest lens that I will use is my 24-120 VR lens. I also have an MB-D200 grip attached.

Yes, I know that there are tripods that will work but I don’t want to spend 4 to 5 hundred dollars. I am sure some one out there has had this same concern and has found the “Perfect” tripod.

In my younger days was able to hold the camera pretty steady at slow shutter speeds but I’m getting older and I‘ve been missing out on what could have been a great picture because of a small amount of blur.

I would be very grateful if someone would help me.

Thanks,

Coach

This Christmas I got a good tripod, that had the head attached, I didn't need to buy the head seperately. It is 66.5" completely extended and then 27" folded. I toted it around MK for the evening in March. It's not too heavy, but it is sturdy. It is perfect for what I use it for- I didn't need anything too fancy! I got it on sale for $50 I think, from Black Photo in Moncton, NB, Canada, but I'm sure you could get one elsewhere too. The name brand is Giottos. It is a Giottos VT 809 e-way tripod. It also has a website listed: www. giottos.com although I've never gone to the site. Good luck!

Looking for the "perfect" tripod is like looking for the "perfect" camera...it all depends. If you want something that is tall and folds small, it'll have lots of leg sections, which are a pain to set up and take down. It'll also be either heavy, unstable, or expensive.

You also can't get cheap, light, and stable. Plastic and thin metals are cheap and light. Heavier metal tripods are cheap and stable. Carbon fiber tripods are light and stable.

Gitzo has a Traveller series of tripods that meets your physical specs, but it's pricier than you'll want to spend. I don't think that Bogen/Manfrotto has anything that meets your specs. I suggest that you reconsider the minimum size restriction.
