While our visit to "Today" was generally unremarkable, we did go-we got there veeeerrryyyy early (arrived at NBC at 6:00 am from Reading PA

), and DS had
the most fun. He enjoyed it so much because I discovered the greatest gadget for parents of older kids on the go. But I'll get to that later.....
They lined us up on 48th from 5th ave. Started letting us "in" around 6:45 at which time
Taylor began rehearsing! The streets were still pretty quiet and it was magical hearing his voice echoing off all the buildings. I got chills!
I heard that the people in the front of the line arrived at 4:00 am. So I didn't feel so bad. I wasn't gonna be doing that - have at it folks! We were shuffled around for the whole almost-2-hour wait and finally landed ourselves just a few rows back from the stage. Still, I learned how short I actually am. My view was
highly obstructed. Here's my problem...why can't they elevate that stage? It looks elevated on TV, but really it's probably only a foot off the ground. Why bother? DS had a fine view (refer to nifty-gadget footnote below) and got some pretty nice pictures. He also narrated a lot to me, such as "he's signing autographs" "he's talking to Matt," and my favorite, "MOM HE'S RIGHT NEXT TO US!" Again, I am short.
Anyway, here's what I primarily took away from whole experience: Somehow there is nothing like seeing a person in the flesh, in broad daylight, in the sunshine in fact, to really understand how they look. And I don't want to get you girls all riled up this morning, but good Lord almighty he is a beautiful man. During commercial breaks, before and after his performances, he mostly stood on the stage looking kind of intense, with this half-smile scanning the audience, taking it all in. Just stood there - if I could have just taken that home to put on my lawn or something! Took my breath away. Oh and what I really noticed is that he was quite a bit thinner than I thought. He's tall, but not quite as (I mean this in the nicest way) meaty as I had thought.
I know it's been said before, but everyone including my non-perceptive DS, commented on how tired he looked. We heard him sing his songs 3 times in all. During rehearsal, another soundcheck, and what was on TV. He turned on the charm for the TV, but the other times he was very sluggish. But you know, most of us in line at 6 am were sucking down our coffee with bags under our eyes. He was dressed, in makeup and singing. I'd be worried if he wasn't tired.
It was definitely a Taylor crowd (TAKE THAT MATT LAUER YOU IDIOT). Every single time he sang the words "do I make you proud" we screamed. Even during soundcheck! And when he brought out the harmonica we went wild! I hope that made it to TV.
Watched some of it back and my kid was in most of the whole-audience shots. Did I mention that I'm short?
Nifty gadget : From the fishing department in our sporting-goods store, I picked up a backpack that has a small folding stool attached. I needed to carry a backpack anyway, and I was expecting all the waiting around to be a lot for my kiddo. Thought it would be nice for him to sit on while he waited. Later in the day waiting for busses and things he did sit on it. But for the show he stood on it. Now you need to know that I am the most non-rude person you'll meet. I'd never put him on my shoulders or anything. I even had him do away with his sign. But on the stool he was probably just under 6 feet. And believe me there were plenty of 6+ foot guys in the audience. Most of them were in front of me. So I thought it was fair.
It was fun just being in the audience sharing the Taylor-Love! Met a lot of fun people - it was definitly worth it. Maybe he'll do Bryant Park next summer for GMA. Now that would be perfect.
