We are also considering to Luau. Also wondering if we should do Luau and Ohanas we all loved Ohana's the last time. It will be my husband and I along with three girls 6,9, and 3.
We did both and enjoed them both-- they are really very different even if they sound similar.
The food is a little bit better at Ohanas, although they both offer yummy food in large portions. The food is similar with the emphasis on bbq, but, just spread them out so you won't feel you are eating the same thing twice!
My DD4 did not get into the games at Ohana. Lots of kids did. It was not easy to watch what was going on because its very crowded in there. So there isn't really a feeling of a dinner show at all. Maybe if you are sitting right next to the action.
The Luau is not really audience participation much at all (except for one second halfway thru when they call people, up on stage) and.. its not that geared to little kids, actually. As much as we like it (and we DO) I find the hurry up and wait aspect of it really annoying. We got our tix in advance from the concierge, so we got there only about 20 minutes early (as opposed to the full 45 min early last time) only to find a HUGE line. There didn't appear to be a different line for folks with tickets and without tickets. We also never got our photo to look at, but no biggie. Then, when we got to the waiting garden area, there is very little seating and the cash bar (some folks were SUPER AGGRAVATED by that cash thing-- you really don't carry cash most of the time at WDW) had ridiculously long lines, and you think they would have planned for it better, AND the cash bar only offered beer and wine which I think is a change and an unwelcome one because I don't mix what I drink and most adults I know don't either-- so I didn't get a drink at all since I didn't ant to be drinking wine and switching to a tropical drink once I got inside. Last year I remember drinking a vodka tonic while waiting... but that might not be an issue for everyone... and so, then you wait around, with no entertainment and little seating, in the dark. Not my daughter's finest hour. AND-- all the anticipation had her so wound up-- she fell asleep 5 minutes into the show. Which she had been so eager to see all week. So, we were a little disappointed but that was our fault, I guess-- usually she can stay up til 10 if she is doing something fun, but at the end of a week at Disney she was out by 8:15.
I saw a LOT of cranky kids during the waiting AND a lot of sleeping kids in the start of the show. I wonder if some bad reviews of this dinner show are reflecting the whole hurry-up-then-wait-in-the-nearly-pitch-dark aspect of the preshow time.
This makes it sound like we disliked it-- we actually LOVE it and plan to go back next year and hopefully DD will stay awake for it. Maybe we can get a resveration for the earlier show next time.
If you *do* go-- let your girls dress up in hula girl garb. DD loved that and got a LOT of attention because hardly any girls did that.
