The Official LOST Season Five *No Spoilers* Thread

And I continue to believe that if you time-travel to the past, your actions CAN affect the future (a la "Back to the Future"). We'll just have to agree to disagree.:goodvibes

This whole time-travel thing just fries my brain. It's one of those "which came first, the chicken or the egg" - if Sayid has always shot young Ben, wasn't there a "first time" for 1977 when Sayid was still a kid growing up in Iraq and he wasn't 35 or so years old and came back to the island to shoot young Ben? Time from 1977 thru 2007 had to occur once before it got to be 2007 so anyone from 2007 could travel back to 1977. KWIM?

Ah well, I'm going to drive myself nuts trying to understand it. It's just a tv show, not life or death importance, so I'm just going to accept that the writers understand it better than I do and just sit back and enjoy it every week.:thumbsup2
I'm not sure of a source, but I believe Darlton has said that LOST time travel is not related in any way to Back To The Future time travel.

I know, time travel is a confusing subject. Nothing happened once, it all happened at the same time. Think of it as the universe was created in one moment, the entire timeline was created in one moment. So, there's no first time.

If THAT made any sense, lol. The posts before me explain it a little better, and go into some of the more aspects of LOST's time travel.

It was in the Official Lost podcast when the Producers explained the rules of Lost Time Travel. They DO NOT follow the "Back to the Future" paradox.

People can believe what ever they want but I'm gonna bet the producers are telling the truth.

And I'm editing to add that I really really recommend listening to the producers. They are at ABC.com and on iTunes. I've recommended them every season and LOTS of people have told me they aren't interesting in investing another 15-20 min a week into this show but I figure if you are discussing it on an internet message board it might be in your interest to listen in while you surf. They are highly informative and clarify a lot of what is discussed and speculated on in this thread. And they are pretty entertaining too.

I couldn't agree more! And if anyone is worried, they don't reveal any spoilers during the podcast. Or if they do, they always tell you before hand and give you a chance to turn off the podcast. But that doesn't happen often.

Oh, and they list the podcast transcripts over on Lostpedia if you don't want to be bothered with downloading on an mp3 player.

I agree, the podcasts are very informative.

Speaking of that, what do you think about the whole Rebecca Mader/age thing? That's a mess, to say the least.

I think it was 'I Do' -- where Kate gets married to Kevin, and then leaves him because she hates taco night.

:lmao: :lmao: :lmao:

Would it help, Amy, to think of it as more of a flashback? We are seeing a flashback of what happened in 1977. There is only one 'today'. There is only one 1977 and this is the way it happened. Just trying to help (and win you over to the dark side)

over here in the uk our lost episodes are on Sundays, so just watched it and is now safe to read this thread until Wednesday.

I was wondering why Sawyer and Juliet don't get the sub and go back somewhere nice and start gambling on the sports stuff (in fact anything) that they know will happen so they can live a good life.

Hi Susan. You are much more disciplined than me. I don't think I could wait 4 days to see an episode of Lost knowing that others had already seen it.

I think Juliet did want to go back but Sawyer convinced her there was nothing to go back to. My guess is that at this point, after everything they went through, money isn't their top priority. I guess the ways of the hippies :hippie: had rubbed off on them.

are you going to watch while you're there? The season Finale is on during our trip and we've blocked out 2 hours to see it. :rotfl2:

We didn't watch when we were there, so I just saw it last night. If it was the finale like for you, we probably would have blocked out time to watch too!

What an episode!!!!

Ok help me out here. I thought I was getting the time travel stuff, but now I'm confused. Even though Jack and the rest are in 1977 that doesnt mean the rest of the Ajira people are in that time frame, right? I was thinking of it like Daniel said... a record and they are in one track (1977) and the Ajira crash people are on a different track (200?). Now this is where I'm getting lost. Is each track complete (ie. a whole linear thread of time)? Then what he said about not changing what happened would be true because the future that would be changed is in a different track. Does that make any sense? :confused3

I think the tracks refered to years there. If you are listening to the first track of a record you can't impact the last one sort of thing. It's all the same record (ie timeline) but different song (year).

MTE - it is a mess. I think it was a mistake. Damon and Carleton are in LA and not often in Hawaii. I think someone changed it on set and it was missed. None of the actors knew that date would be important in the next season.

Possible scenarios
1) writing mistake. the writers changed the timeline or the character to fit in with more time travel
2) RM or ME or someone changed the date during taping. A flubbed line? RM sensitive about her age? and producers and editors didn't catch.
3) "Ben's" intel on Charlotte was wrong. Someone changed her info so she wouldn't be connected to Dharma.

My opinion: I think they MAY have caught it and let it slide rather than retape the scene not realizing people were such date freaks!
Bottom line. Production mistake no matter the cause and viewers need to move on and accept "Ben's" date was wrong.

I thought it was interesting to hear them say that they don't control the "pop ups" and to not take the pop up info as 'canon' because it may not be 100% correct.

Actually, I just watched those episodes, that's not what was said.

[In the operating room, we see Tom in the background. Pickett is stroking Colleen's face. Ben exits.]
JACK: What happened?
JULIET: Gunshot wound to the abdomen.
[Jack scrubs up, and notices some spinal x-rays hanging on a light screen.]
JULIET: Those aren't hers. Come on.
[They enter the operating room.]

Ben had a tumor, and they aren't caused by a bullet. :)

I don't think that was the scene to which I was referring. I'll have to pull it up, but it was when they were operating on Ben.

I sure hope you find it. That would prove the time travel theory that 1977 always happened that way. popcorn::

O M G!!!!! I just watched last week's episode! Now I need to go back and read what everyone has written since then!

They didn't give up though. Part of Jin's job was to search the island for any sign of their return. Every day.

I think Juliet had given up to an extent, I recall her muttering something like "I didn't think they would come back..." in disbelief when Sawyer told her. I'm sure part of her giving up was just a hope since she had a good life with Sawyer and didn't want Kate coming and ruining it.

I'm absolutely certain he survives. I don't know it this has been already mentioned, but if you all recall back in season two when Juliet convinced Jack to operate on the the cyst in Ben's back, they said it was caused by a bullet from a childhood accident.

Whoa! I didn't remember that! Has anyone researched it out to be sure that is what was said?!

Oh and I forgot something else my dear Husband reminded me of. Remember when Ben said to Juliet "Because you are mine" or something of that nature? He thinks that maybe Juliet and Ben develop a nurturing relationship of some sorts. Like mother/son. Creepy to me but very believable. I am betting that she is the one that nurses him back to health.

Oooh, that is a disturbing thought...

M. Night Shymalan to direct finale

In a shockingly quiet press release yesterday, executive producers Carlton Cuse and Damon Lindelof, revealed that the director of the series finale would be none other than acclaimed director M. Night Shymalan. The content of the finale still remains a secret, but Lindelof and Cuse stated that they wished to "get a hold" on the most important episode of next year, to make sure that everything goes "without a hitch." Shyamalan, director of such films as The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, and Lady in the Water says that he is more than up for the challenge, and will begin working with the producers as soon as his newest film, The Last Airbender, completes production.

IN-FREAKING-CREDIBLE! That tells you a lot right there about all the twists and turns of this series. I'll be soooo sad though when it's all over!
