*** The Official July 2014 thread, join us won't you? ***

I am gonna try to catch up a little bit.

Congrats to Midori! I am not looking forward to the buying a car thing. But my son will be 16 in under 2 years but I don't know if there will be any interest in driving. He seems a bit behind the curve in most area of social things being autistic but ahead on school learning things. I had to buy him a $100 calculator for his Algebra II homework (he's in 8th grade) and that is one to 2 years ahead of his peers in our district. I also work at the high school they will go to and we live 1 mile from it.

As for the vacations, we have done the cruises (carnival) cheap, good and fun. The kids loved them and I loved them. While I love all things Disney, I don't like their cruise ships for one reason: no casino. Part of MY fun on cruises are bingo, dining room food, and casino. I don't like pools, outside stuff (asthma, and in the middle of the ocean it's very humid and I can't breathe well). I say that in the 2 weeks worth of cruises I have done, I have spent about 1 hour outdoors. :lmao:
We all loved the cruises, had a blast.

I have looked up renting points and it scares me too. I don't know what to do about it. I am hoping that a discount comes out for July and we can just upgrade to moderate. My DH wants to do POR. We haven't done that and would like to try it. We also changed our resort for right now. We are now not staying at AoA, we are at Pop preferred room. Closer room for the same or slightly lower price right now. Trying to save a bit of money on this trip.

Hope everyone has a great Labor Day Weekend!!!

Wow, kudos to your son in the advanced math class! Perhaps a future as a CPA? :goodvibes

I work at one of the best high schools around here (I consider it THE best), and my niece who is going into 7th grade is probably gonna go there. I'm sure my younger niece ( about to turn 10) will also end up going there. In NYC, the 8th graders have to apply to high school, even if they live next door to the school. It's really become a messy and stressful process for them since mayor Bloomberg changed the application process years ago. And the newer process has nothing to do with No Child Left Behind. He just made it so much more difficult for our students, and so much more stressful and confusing for parents. A child could be randomly placed in a school on the opposite end of Brooklyn, for example, as opposed to their local high school which may in fact be a much better school for them. :headache:

Our kids even have to apply to elementary school and middle school. Way too much pressure for them and for the parents of the little ones.

:) hi :) my boys will be driving as well in about 2 years & I can't imagine it!!! Arghh!!!! As far as math, gosh I would bet they are a year behind where they should be, drives me nuts.
I would love to do a cruise... But like renting dvc points I'm Scared and I'm not sure why?????? Maybe being on a ship for so long, I'm not sure. The price is good though. As far as renting points, I can't find one bad thing about the company I was going to use.. And to stay at a deluxe for the price of a mod is completely wonderful. But, I probably will not do it.
POR is awesome!!! You will love it! My boys even loved the pole fishing. In fact ds13 would wake up on our no park rest/sleep in day very early (and force his twin) to walk over to the fishing hole. Two of my boys rented bikes :) we loved the food court. We loved the white bridge that led us from our room to the main bldg. we even plopped on the benches a few times to take it all in. Its the only resort we stayed at (we only went once). And I'm switching to CSR to try something different as well as the fact we were magically pixie dusted. I booked a regular room and we were upgraded to a royal room pool view. Knowing I can't book that type, I would rather switch resorts.... Does that make sense?????
Hope you all have a wonderful weekend :)

Wow, that room upgrade sounds awesome! I've read wonderful things about both CSR and POR/POFQ. I haven't gotten a chance to see those resorts though since we haven't gone to those restaurants to eat, and we never stayed at a moderate. We were looking into the mods and also Swan before we decided to buy DVC.

Thanks – I will need all the help I can apply for, grateful for all.
Right!!! – We should have known when we were down on the floor playing with our children’s Tonka Trucks and Barbie Cars, our kids were preparing us for the bigger purchases in life.
Wish we had Subways! (Not the Sandwich Store) – Would be nice to let someone else do the driving. I imagine the cost of parking is like booking a Deluxe Resort and the Deluxe D.P. – I had better be thankful for the free parking I have been granted.

It's funny you say that about the subway...I wish we had more space sometimes, so we could have the free parking! But we definitely live in the best of both worlds...although lots of places have metered parking in Brooklyn, a lot also have free street parking or parking lots for some stores, like the supermarket. We also live in a very quiet residential neighborhood, and everyone here knows each other...like our own little small town. We know the local mom & pop store owners and coffee shop owners as well. The neighborhood pizzeria has been there forever and the owner remembers me when I was 3 years old! He still can't believe the ages of my kids. :goodvibes

But...we are lucky to have such a great public transportation system. It enables us to only have one car because if anything happens where we can't use the car we could still get around. We don't live near the subway (a bus ride away from the bus in our corner, or a half hour walk), but that keeps the neighborhood quiet since the only commuters passing through here are from the neighborhood. So no crowds. :thumbsup2. But we're not too far from the city...yes, Brooklyn is IN NYC since it's one of the five boroughs of nyc, but everyone here refers to manhattan as "the city".

Yes ~ RHMH ~ I've been haunting the PM of "bangzoom" and driving her and her dh crazy, since they are dvc owners! They have been a great help. And although the company is very reputable (dis sponser) I don't think I can do the 100% up front cost. Makes me nervous. Oh well a mod it will be :)
I have 3 boys twins 13 ds 10. Teens are a tough age! I can't imagine how tough girls are..... Scared!

Aww, you're not driving us crazy, we're happy to help! :)

Happy Labor Day everyone! It's raining on and off here, and it's my last day off...I go back to work tomorrow. :sad2:

We only go back for 2 days (faculty only) and all students start school next Monday. This Thursday and Friday are Rosh Hashana (Jewish new year) so schools are closed. We celebrate but we're also far from religious. DS8 started Hebrew school last year once a week after school, and he's going twice a week after school this year. DS6 is going once a week this year. DH and I never thought we would even join a temple, but this one is very laid back and they don't put any pressure on you or try to make you feel guilty for not going a lot. They also make it a lot of fun for the kids. They have their own junior congregation, and during services they are in the smaller sanctuary, doing some fun activities as they learn about our culture. My kids love it there. DH and I had been dreading Hebrew school because we didn't want the boys to feel like we were forcing anything on them, but they really love it there and they're looking forward to Thursday and Friday morning! We are so relieved how wonderful a place it is. We had found out about it through friends of ours. Their son and DS8 went to nursery school together and they're still good friends. So the families became friends as well. They had told us about this temple because their daughter had been going there (she's 3 years older than her brother and DS8). We trusted their judgment and we are so glad we did! It seems most of the temples here in Brooklyn are either orthodox (ultra religious) or modern orthodox (very close to ultra religious except the men and women actually sit together).

So, my mom started doing the cooking today. We go to my parents' house Wednesday and Thursday for a traditional holiday dinner, compete with chicken soup, stuffed cabbage, brisket, kasha and bow ties, lots of challah and lots of cake including some cakes my sister is baking. And even more food than that, that's just some of it! Looking forward to some holiday family time with everyone! :)

Tonight we're all going out to a really great Italian restaurant here in Brooklyn. It was featured on Man vs. food some time ago. Called L&B Spumoni Gardens and it's delicious. They have outdoor seating but also a restaurant indoors...we're going to the indoor part tonight. It's great because even inside the restaurant, you could order slices of pizza, or get an Italian dish. They have terrific variety and fantastic food. They've been here for many years.

While I'm certainly not looking forward to leaving the boys tomorrow (they'll be at my parents' house the next 2 days with my nieces), nor am I looking forward to learning the ropes of the new teacher evaluation system (even though I'm already somewhat familiar with it from reading up on it a lot), I'm looking forward to seeing my wonderful colleagues tomorrow and catching up. I'm very lucky to have a nice bunch of people to work with, and a fantastic, supportive administration. And I'm also looking forward to seeing my former students in their Level IV Italian class next Monday, as well as meeting my other 4 classes of students for the first time. Have a great week everyone! :grouphug:

Well I hope your first days back at work are stress free. teachers have been back in our county now for two weeks and kids for a week so this will be the second week of school already. We have off on Thursday only for Rosh Hashana. I am already looking forward to having off. Haha. I am not Jewish but will gladly welcome a day off of school. I feel like I have already been back at school for months. It's amazing how quickly you get back into the routine. Summer feels like a distant memory.

We are gearing up for our October trip to Disney. I already have some things packed. We just made our final payment last week. I can't believe it is getting so close. I can't wait for Food and a wine and MNSShP.

Happy, Happy Labor Day! Yummm... Love brisket, chicken soup and stuffed cabbage. I'm Jewish too, but do not practice it at all :( my ex was Christian and I dropped religion pretty much which is sad. That's great that your children enjoy Hebrew School. What a wonderful gift your going them ~ allowing them to learn. My boys will be 14 in a few months and never had their Bar Mitzvah. My parents do celebrate the holidays and teach them the basics, my boys do acknowlege being Jewish and are proud. One of them takes out books about it from the library. I feel guilty but, sadly I am just not religious & really don't have time I work sometimes 6 days a week.
OHhh my gosh I love Italian food and that restaurant sounds amazing!!!! I love NY as well and all the wonderful restaurants. Sounds like you live in a perfect community :)
Good luck on your first day of school! Let us know how it went :)

Could you fit in my carry-on? :rotfl2: I am really excited! Although DH and I really pondering whether a July trip will happen next year. We are trying to move so we are not sure what the financial situation will be in a few months. We will see. There is always another time if not and I can't complain since we are going twice this year for the third year in a row.

I know what you mean...after that first week of classes it's like we never left for summer vacation! I understand about looking forward to having off already. While I love my job and my school, I looked at the calendar for the Fall and noticed that our longest stretch of 5-day teaching weeks if 5 between now and Xmas vacation, and that stretch starts Monday and ends Columbus Day weekend. Not bad at all, no wonder the Fall semester always seems to fly!

So excited for you!! I have always wanted to go to F&W. DH and I always fantasize about when we retire and can go to Disney for F&W for a few days because we don't have to worry about missing work, and going the first week of December to see it all decorated for the holidays without the crowds...we refuse to go Xmas week. Summer crowds are one thing and manageable for us, but I don't think I'd want to deal with the Xmas week crowds.

Before you know it, you will be there! :goodvibes

You shouldn't feel guilty about religion. It is a very personal choice how someone practices or doesn't practice a religion, and no one can tell you what's right for you. Plus, it seems that your boys are very comfortable with who they are and regardless of religion being in the picture or not, that is something to be very proud of as a parent. :)

The first day was great! A lot better than anticipated. NY State is now under a new teacher evaluation system starting this year, so I thought today and tomorrow would be just a lot of boring meetings about that, but instead it ended up being very pleasant as well as informative. They gave been preparing us for this transition for the past two years already, so the planning ahead has really paid off now. That's what I love about my school. We have a very supportive administration that is understanding of what we're going through, but they also expect us to work hard and put the students first on our jobs. I love the balance of support and challenge in my school. Everyone in my department (foreign language) works very hard and has excellent work ethic, which makes it an excellent place to work. And our assistant principal is a wonderful role model, someone who truly practices what she preaches. I'm very lucky to be in such a wonderful school. It's a huge high school, over 4,000 students, but has such a close-knit community feel to it. Looking forward to tomorrow, then a 4-day weekend!:thumbsup2

Hi Guys!

I feel like I have been away for so long ( I know it wasn't really long but). I just started the school year again at our local High School and my kids both started school on Tuesday as well. I had worked on my schedule and my coworkers schedules over the summer and when we got to school on Tuesday and today, our caseload schedules were partially changed which changes our schedules since we follow them to their classes. Oh well, sometimes being prepared just doesn't work out! That's my school system for ya. I am excited, the classes I get to be in this year are Algebra II(2 different classes), Geometry, Business Math, Law, Biology, and 10th grade English. I would love more math, but 4 classes are ok as I will do tutoring Geometry as well. I love working with the kids I do, but I can truly appreciate a day off (tomorrow). My kids are both at the local Middle school (5th grade-DD, and 8th grade-DS) for this year. I will be sleeping in tomorrow morning :lmao:

Hi! I completely understand, things get so hectic at the beginning of the school year. I'll be happy the second week when the students are completely settled in their classes (sometimes they have a program change the first week), and we can give out textbooks. Once we're over that hurdle I feel like I'm fully back in the swing of things. I know the coming week (first week of classes) will be crazy, but after that things will be much more consistent.

I hope you enjoyed your well deserved day off! :)

I love Stuffed cabbage.

Oh, my mom makes that the best! :thumbsup2 I enjoyed it very much yesterday and the day before. She makes it exactly the same as my grandmother made it. I can't eat it anywhere else and enjoy it as much...chicken soup too, and I make that the same as my mom does.

:) :) soo glad you had a great 1st day :) :) teachers are so special and it's even better when they enjoy what they do & it's obvious you do! The school is lucky to have you . HAPPY NEW YEAR to you & your family.

Thank you! We had a really nice holiday, I just ate too much! :rotfl:

I wish more people had your outlook on those of us who work very hard at being a teacher and truly care about the kids. I think too many people get caught up in the media and think that the majority are like the negativity they see on the news...also if someone has one bad experience with a teacher, that doesn't mean that all teachers are the same way as that one person. And yes, I do love what I do. I truly couldn't picture myself doing anything else, nor would I want to.

Another month down!
Who has been looking at the Mickey pumpkin decor. on main street?:goodvibes

I haven't looked at Mickey pumpkin decor, but I will have to check it out for sure. It must look beautiful there!

We're going July 26 - August 1. Staying at Regal Oaks. Just booked the house.

Welcome to our thread, full of warm and friendly people! :goodvibes

Hello everyone! :)

I was wondering if any of you have ever been to Victoria & Albert's? A friend of mind just came back from WDW last weekend, and her SIL and BIL went there and told them it was fantastic. This same friend of mine has been to V&A and said it is the best meal she ever had in her life. And she has been to Michelin rated restaurants in NYC and other cities. DH and I are almost convinced that we have to go there on our July trip and bring the boys to one of the kids clubs. Now this would be a VERY expensive night, so if any of you have been there I'd love your opinions.

The thing is, V&A's takes the tables in wonderland card, but will stop doing so on August 1, 2014. So this is our last chance to get 20% off the bill if we eat there. I'm afraid if we don't take advantage while we can, we will regret it in the future that we didn't go there at least once. I added up the numbers and we could make it work financially. It's just that even though we know the cost going in, I'm afraid we will still get sticker shock when the bill comes. KWIM? I don't know what to do...advice?

We're going July 26 - August 1. Staying at Regal Oaks. Just booked the house.

I bid you an official :welcome: to our small but friendly group! Glad to have you. I will add you to our front page and get you "officially" entered into our family! Make yourself at home and ask anything you wish and we will do our best to help or guide you in the right direction. We love to hear Disney stories and why you love it, or what your plans are for your trip. In our thread, some have posted our dining plans, so if you are comfortable doing so, we would all love to see them. Again, welcome!

I have never been, but have wanted to go. I have heard great things and if it were me, I would go (especially if I also got a discount) if I could afford it. :thumbsup2
