The *official* Ipod help thread

I have a question. Not exactly technical support, but...

I have an iPod Nano (1st gen.) that I bought from Costco. If it broke, would they give me a 1st generation or a 2nd generation iPod Nano?

a refurbed first gen with a 90 day warranty if it's still less than a year old. if you took Applecare out on it and took it to an Apple store, they'd probably be swayed to give you a second gen.

Ok,I'm having major problems with Windows..I even sent my laptop in for repairs..I've come to the conclusion that I just need to reinstall windows...I have backed up as much of ITunes as possible, but when ITunes finishes transferring songs it gets stuck in burn mode and freezes...
My question is,If I have my Ipod set to enable disk will I be able to transfer the files from my Ipod back to Itunes if I reinstall Windows?

yes

Promise? because I don't seem to be able to get the s-z section of Itunes backed up onto a disk..It keeps freezing and opening the CD door... I want to just give up backing the rest up and just put them on ITunes from my IPod after I put the new version of windows on my computer.

What happens if you buy a new computer?

you can up to five authorized computers using the same iTunes library. after five, iTunes won't recognize a sixth if you don't deauthorize one of the first five.

make sense? :)

That is what I though. We tried to put Itunes on our PC(I'm on a laptop now) and it won't even open for us.

your iPod is just a little hard drive. anything that was on there the last time you synched is still sitting there. now if the iPod fails in the meantime, that's different.

OK,,Well,I'm going to do a windows recovery right now and hope for the best. :)

It actually is. Going to the fix-it guys tomorrow. Wish this would stop happening!

You have YET to come up with a better idea to cool off the bottom of the laptop than frozen peas, by the way.

And it is a good book. So, blah. :p

Okay. I am a complete novice when it comes to this ipod stuff. Of course I just purchased two refurbed 30gb video ipods for DH and me. Any help would be greatly appreciated. So, my first newbie question is how do I know what generation ipod I have?
