The *official* Ipod help thread

toddp3, thank you so much!!! We have now corrected the problem with the new nano and added music to the video. It certainly helped getting the music organized a bit. Now, the original nano is another story. I have the music organized into playlists under Mom's Ipod folder. When it tries to sync the songs it tells me there isn't enough memory. But, that can't be right because there are only 140 of the original 385 on the nano now. I've been reading the support info at apple.com. Should I just restore the original nano and start over syncing the music?

Okay, I think I understand. I have one more question (for now anyway) do I need to set the ipods to update manually instead of automatically? If so, I need to do that before I plug in the ipods, correct?

Actually, no and no.

Using playlists for syncing can be done perfectly well automatically, and since everyone is sharing the same library there's no need for manual at all.

As long as you don't think there's anything for you to loose on the iPod, then Restoring is always a good option. It's possible something is eating up the space and needs to be removed, but it'd be hard to tell what. A restore will make it factory new software-wise. It's like when your cable/DSL company asks you to reboot your modem on a Tech Support call - Apple will make you Restore if they think there's anything even remotely out of whack with your iPod.

Okay, one more question and it is probably a really dumb one. If I restore my ipod, it won't have any effect on the other two at all, correct? It will only clear mine? All our music is now neatly stored away in playlists on itunes under each person's name, so I would be able to just reload all that music back to mine. Is there anything else I need to know before I restore? I guess that is my best option at this point since I keep getting the not enough memory message.

It will only affect the one you choose to do it on. I'm pretty sure that's why they put it on the Summary tab for the iPod itself - so you basically can't restore more than one with a single button push.

Yes, once it's restored, you'll have to go to the music tab again and reset it to sync from playlists instead of all music, but then you should be good to go.

Oh, man. I started reading this thread hoping for some good advice about buying an iPod video and what I need... but I can see that I am definitely not smart enough to follow here. I am electronically challenged.

Is there an iPod for Dummies thread? :rotfl2:

What do you want to know?

If you intend to use your iPod for exercising, your best bet is a Nano or a Shuffle (I'd go Nano myself). If you just want one to listen to while at work or cleaning the house or traveling, a Video is nice to have. I have the A/V kit and I bring it with me everywhere we go to because all I need is to take RWY in or a cable line (I have a converter I carry too), and I can watch anything on my iPod on my TV. Soon every room at Disney will offer this as they convert rooms to have flat screens.

The most durable iPod is the Nano right now (which is why it's the best one to get for kids).

I hope someone reads this thread again!

I have a big problem with my beloved nano.
My computer crashed hard. It is unrevivable. So now, I have no way to add new music to my ipod without having to erase everything on my nano. I was able to bring up my purchased files on my husband's computer. But no way (that I know of) to bring up my emusic downloads, and I have no idea how to put everything I have downloaded off my own personal cds (oh so many). Can someone help me figure out how to put what is on my ipod on my husband's computer? Help! I am so discouraged!!!

There are programs, I know only of the one for Mac and it's called Senuti. Maybe someone here knows the windows version but I can search the apple site in a minute for it.

Here's a link to an apple discussion with a bunch of links for programs for PC and Macs.

Does anyone know if there is any way possible to access your itunes library on 2 different computers? When I log into my account on the second computer, the library of songs that I created on my first computer is not there.
