I've got a holiday conundrum coming up. My in-laws have already announced what they're giving DW and me as our big gift for Christmas this year:
They're going to pay to have hand rails built on our front porch steps.
See, they're getting on in years, and it's only two steps up, but they struggle a bit when they come to visit. So they want to construct the rails to make it easier.
I understand that it's a struggle, but this isn't really a Christmas gift for my DW and I to enjoy. It's for them. It also bothers me that they decided to make alterations to my house without ever consulting me. I told DW we should tell them we're going to have their house painted blue. The other problem is that in order to make it look right, we'd either have to widen the steps or build more railing to attach to the pillars holding up the porch roof. I'm afraid they're going to bypass that for something that looks crappy.
I think I would have received this better if they'd asked me to work on something, rather than just announcing that this is what they're doing. After all, it's my house.
So my options are to either refuse, which makes me look like an ingrate who doesn't want them to visit, or else spend a decent amount of money on my own to build something now as a pre-emptive strike.

You should try to work with them. So, there isn't any hard feeling over it. I would also demand final approval. It is after all, your house.

Ugh. That's quite the mess. Given the options, I think I'd move for a pre-emptive strike.
Send the housepainters to start rainbow-striping their house tomorrow.

Sorry Mark, that really is a pain in the Beverly. Kind of selfish of them and puts you on the spot, big-time. I think Randall's advice is probably the way to go. I like the pre-emptive strike idea, but now that they've "announced" their intentions, they could see it as a refusal. Hopefully, they'll see it the way you do as it is a modification to the front of your house, one of the first things everyone will see and they'll agree to do it your way... either that or tell them to just give you $$$ and you'll take care of it.
And if all else fails, do what Nate suggested!
I install a gate at the top of the rails to prevent them from coming any further...as their gift.![]()
