I took time off from this place for a couple years, and came back to find things haven't really changed.
It's amazing how simple threads get hijacked and turn into arguments, psychoanalyses, ad hominems.... the works.

Why do you think this is the case here, in particular? Isn't this a place for folks that share an interest in a theme park based on a Mouse? Not sports. Not politics. Not religion.
Some people get flagged for minor infractions, others skate by even though the offense is far greater. It's quite an interesting study in human behavior.

I welcome your most de-rail-iest posts!

I used to just about live on a forum dedicated to parents and and those in waiting to become parents to Chinese adoptees. And, like the Disboards, we had a section for off topic posts. I can say that it ran exactly like the Dis. Sometimes, we would all be getting along having a wonderful discussion and then, all of a sudden, someone would lose their mind or be offended about something and an argument would erupt. Some people would violate the no religion or politics rule with seemingly, no sanction and others would be in jail for the slightest comment.

And, Like Dis, we would often spend a ridiculous amount of time arguing about if a post was political.

I personally like the fact that we have most of the forum dedicated to the Mouse and this little section where we can just enjoy our community and discuss random, not Mouse, things. This is my outlet since I am not as inclined to post personal stuff on facebook.

True for all the other forums here, except this one, the Community Board. As stated at the top of this forum....

And that has not changed from the day I first came here in March, 1999, over 24 years ago.

Who were you before you created this Ben Stiller character?

Seems to me even controversial things go along exceptionally well here with a nice mashup of very thoughtful differing points of view until someone somewhere gets a whiff of congeniality, doesn't like it, and then dumps gasoline on things :stir: because we aren't supposed to get along after all, it doesn't fit the narrative. Then another antagonist feeds the trolls 🐿️🐿️🐿️then we have a roaring fire 🔥and the mods need to put it out.

If everyone would just ignore the firestarters things would be fine but I now suspect it is on purpose

Interesting.

This has me wondering what your thoughts are on the new pitch clock in baseball.

I belong to a few other non-Disney forums and find them all about the same. Joined here when we were in process of planning a Disney trip and hadn't been there for several years. Enjoy participating in discussions where our input can actually be of benenfit to others. The multiple/daily nonsense threads seem pointless to me but to each their own.

A few know-it-alls try to spread their 'wisdom' on virtually every topic. Some who like to bla bla bla on whatever the topic as if posting long/rambly statements somehow makes their opinion more valid. I have put a lot of people on ignore who are needlessly argumentative, have to have the last word on every topic or talk down to others like they are scolding a small child. No one I know in real life thinks more highly of anyone who behaves that way so no idea why being online should be any different.

DIS boards do as a whole march to the beat of a different drummer in regards to people being concerned about a thread getting "hijacked" or "zombie" posts being replied to.
Having been a moderator on my employers forums since the late 1990's and having to sit through way more training hours than I care to remember, those are things you want to encourage. That's what generates "clicks" and views and more clicks and views mean more ad revenue.
Although now if you try and post a new thread, DIS software suggests existing threads that you might want to put your new post in as a reply rather than creating a new post.
Threads are called threads because because they weave here and there and everywhere without regard to the original post. That is how it is supposed to work.

The type of thread usually dictates whether derailing is embraced or not. I've seen some pretty funny ways posters have collaborated together to derail a thread :)

@_19disnA I'm laughing behind the scenes thinking about our PMs not too long ago! :D :D :D

@Mysterian are you trying to stir the pot already?

@LuvOrlando I love (your) threads that end up spiraling into deletion!

Basically, I love these boards and how you can really see someone's personality shine through after a bit. Flames aside, sometimes I think most of us are somewhat older than the normal FB group crowds so we have a different tolerance and quirkiness. JMHO.

The general users probably don't care about "clicks" and views and ad revenues. If they did, you wouldn't see the posts suggesting ad blockers and other solutions to get rid of ads. Since there has been no statement from a mod or webmaster about encouraging finding ways to get ad revenue (or discouraging ways to work around ad revenue), I figure they don't have a problem with it.

I am on other message boards for a variety of topics. Most have threads that wander. The more people you have, the more active they are. A "Community" board gives those who aren't as "involved" in the subject an outlet. As another poster has said, I joined when planning Disney vacations a long time ago. We've done a couple one day trips in the last 4-5 years, so probably 95% of the boards really have no interest to me. But I keep coming back. :)

Love it! We had it in AAA last year and it increased my enjoyment of the games. Players will adapt.
Likewise - I'm not much of a baseball fan but my kids play lacrosse and the college game has a shot clock, High school does not. Most of the time it does not matter but I have been to HS level tournaments where a team gets up by a couple of goals and is then under no obligation to do anything. That can get boring and frustrating, and you certainly don't see that in college games.

How about a shot clock in soccer?

The controversial threads here generate more activity. Try posting something “nice” and it fizzes out pretty quickly. I guess it’s just human nature. Who can look away from a train wreck? Many say they come here for entertainment - well, there you go.

Also, the way people choose to form their sentences can get things fired up, even on a subject that’s seemingly innocuous. First, there’s a little ”dig”, followed by what it is they want to say. Cut out the dig, and they can still say what they want to say. But, then, fewer “likes” and less sense of gratification, I suppose.

Example I saw this morning:

”I'm trying to stay out of your little discussion here but had to point out that streaming is only bleeding money due to the cost side, it is not at all due to the customer/subscriber side.”

Saying

“Streaming is only bleeding money due to the cost side, it is not at all due to the customer/subscriber side”

… is not enough to some people.

I suppose even now some will say the bolded part is nothing. Well, to some, maybe it’s not. But to others, it is.

Sometimes on threads you just know it’s about to go downhill when you start seeing snark like that.

Anyone that dislikes derailed posts/threads, should stay clear of Reddit. lol (that's all it is)
