The Official 2013 Wine and Dine Half Marathon Thread

What a great thing to come back home to! :cloud9: Great job on the runs. Those late starts stink. I woke up late on Tuesday and did not get to run, did a work out instead. You got this 5 miles. Just look what you have to come home too. :thumbsup2

I got my 3.2 in this morning, I did my inhaler, but had a hard time breathing for some reason this morning. Walked a bit more than I wanted to, But my average was still 11.21, so not too bad. I have an 11.6 mile run this weekend. It was a free/no fee race, so figured I would do it. Don't know what I was thinking. :scared1: I was only supposed to go 3 (following the marathon schedule). But next week would have been 7, so maybe I will only do 5. ;)

Can't wait to hear how your race goes this weekend! I'm sure you will do great. I keep thinking that I need to sign up for some sort of race for practice before Wine & Dine...

You live in CT, right? Of course you are struggling to breath, the humidity is unbelievable during New England summers! I'm so impressed with all of your commitment to training.

My Thursday 45 is done with my best magic mile time ever, by almost a minute! 11:09!! That for me is amazing! I typically pull off 13:00 and have occasionally achieved 12:00 but have never broken into the 11's!

Ummmm....not only is that your first time breaking into the 11's but you are so very close to the 10's!!! Fantastic job!

New Shoes. I decided my toes were a sign it was time to go get new running shoes today. I was stupid when I bought my last pair and didn't go to a running store. He had me walk without shoes on first and said I was in the wrong type of shoe. He then asked if I had any pain issues and I mentioned my knees which I assumed was due to my arthritis. He asked where on my knees and I showed him the outside of my knee. He said that was due to my shoes. I was in an extreme stability shoe and should be in normal shoes so it was causing me to supernate. So I have new shoes. They are a bigger size and I could already feel it in my knees. I'm looking forward to trying them out tonight.

Very cool on getting some new shoes fitted to you. What did you end up with? Sounds like you will have a much better time running in them if your previous shoes were causing some of the problems.

I had my "long" training run this morning. I was scheduled to do 5 miles but, as I started running, I also started thinking that my maintenance runs this week have all been closer to the week 3 training plan rather than week 2 and thought, "Hey, maybe I can make it to 6 miles." Usually, since I programmed RunKeeper for 5 miles, I'd have a bit mental block against going any further. But, I ended up playing a bit of a game in trying to lap a walker on my second 3-mile loop and that kept me going and made the miles fly by. So, I ended up getting in 6 miles and it felt awesome. I feel really good about completing today's run and knowing that I am only 6 miles away from my distance training goal. (Longest run on my plan is 12 miles.) So, I'm going to start week 4 next week. Have a very difficult hike ahead of me tomorrow morning too.

My last run was 3.25 miles on Sunday and we are leaving on a mini-vacation tomorrow for 4 days. So, knowing that I wouldn't be running for a while, I knew today would be a day for running. The weather was beautiful...partly cloudy skies, gentle breeze and 75 degrees. I wanted to set a goal of 10 miles or two hours of running:scared1:. My longest distance so far has been 8.1 miles and my longest time is under an hour and a half so I was setting myself up for failure:worried:.

I started out feeling terrible. I was winded already by the first mile, but I soon got over that hump and into my groove:hippie:. I did my 4/2 intervals consistently but had a minor hiccup. I had to walk a small distance (ran out of sidewalk for a bit on a 4-lane, 55 mph road and had to walk on a hill) and my interval timer went off and I lost track of what interval I was on. By the time I got back on track, I'd actually walked 3-4 minutes instead of 2:headache:.

I brought Gatorade chews with me and ate 2 every 30 minutes. I don't know if it did me any good, but it gave me something to look forward to at those intervals. I hit my inhaler 3 times total which did help quite a bit. When I hit mile 7, my legs were toast:sad1:. My knees hurt, my right calf/achilles was cramping up and my toes were sore. Other than that, I wasn't winded and I felt pretty decent so I pushed on. I hit my subdivision at mile 9 and made a decision...My body was so sore and achy, I really just wanted to go home. I'd already gone further and longer than I ever have, but I knew that I want/need to to 10 miles one of these days. I decided that since I already had 9 miles behind me, I would push myself to go one lap through the subdivision. It wasn't fast and it wasn't pretty, but doggone it....I DID IT:dance3::cheer2::yay:!!! I finished 10 miles in 2:12:14 which is a 13:14 pace. I'm not too thrilled with my pace since I was hoping to get 1/2 marathon time in under 13 minutes. I was hoping to keep under 13 minute miles for my distances up to 12 miles. On the other hand, like I told DH, I went 10 miles in about 2 hours 15 minutes and my goal for the half is 3 hours. This means I could have basically walked the final 3 miles and I'd have 45 minutes to do it:cool2:...That's totally doable!

What a great relief it is to get that 10-mile mark under my belt. My next goal is to try and make my regular runs 4-5 miles instead of the 3 I've been doing. The only thing I worry about is the amount of time it takes. I need to look for an hour to an hour and a half to run and that will be hard to do before work in the morning. It will be easy, though, once the kids are in school:cloud9:.

I got home, popped 800mg of ibuprofen, downed a Propel Zero and a 100-calorie protein shake and hopped on the computer to share with you guys:hug:. I hope everyone has a good run (or two or three!) this weekend. I'll be WAY up in the UP of Michigan, fishing with the DH and kids :fish: and visiting family.

I love reading these detailed running reports. It is so helpful in planning for my longer runs to get a feel for how others power through. Fantastic time, btw and how awesome to know you are already running to your goal pace this far out from the race. You are going to blow 3 hours away!

I've got a 10 mile race on Sunday that fits perfectly with my training for a full marathon in Oct. Brand new race on what looks to be an awesome course, so I am really excited about it. :cool1:

Awesome! So glad you found one that works well with your schedule.

Oh meh gawd! I did an early morning run today :) I'm normally a night runner, 7 or 8 pm but its supposed to rain later today so I thought, if kristinrice can get up and run at 4:00am I can try and manage a 10am run. Oh lord, at mile 2 I thought " I should have had a second cup of coffee! " but I finished all 5 miles! I even ran 14:23 pace- I believe that's a personal best :) I pray for good weather for the next 14 or so weeks- these early morning runs are tough!

Good luck on your long runs this weekend!

Melinda
Oh yeah, I tried a Nathan hydration belt for about 2 minutes- not for me. I think I will continue to leave water in my car. I loop passed my car about every 2 miles so I think it will work fine as my " water station ".

Super job on completing your run. And that's great that you mixed things up a little bit with an earlier run. I need to do the same except I should probably aim to do a few evening runs but it is hard to motivate myself to do them. Thanks for the inspiration.

Just wanted to pop in and say hi. :wave2: I'm training for 4 halfs this winter, Wine & Dine will be #1 of the 4. I ran PHM13 using the galloway method with a 5 min run/1 min walk interval throughout.

Now that training is ramping up for W&D I'm hoping to join in a bit more! Good luck on everyone's training.

Welcome! You are very ambitious in your runs :). I am running PHM 2014. It sounds like an awesome race.

Great Job Capseal!! It is so hard to go further than you planned- sometimes it's hard to go as far as you planned! What a mental accomplishment :)

Two question for the experienced runners:

First, since my long runs are increasing I'm getting irritation/blisters on the creases underneath my big toes. Today I used some moleskin and it worked well on one of them, not so well on the other. I'm sure with better placement it would be fine, but do you have any other tricks for these random spots?

Second, my last long run before the race is 14 miles on 10/26. My brother and SIL are running a half to raise money for their adoption that day. Would it be bad to do a half instead of the training? I could probably figure out a way to add in that last mile, if needed. I'm super nervous about being able to meet the pacing requirement at Disney and I think this might be a good dry run. Thoughts?

Have you tried Bodyglide on your feet? I use that and Iniji toe socks for my blister toe issues.

My longest run will only be 11.personally I wouldn't be running 14 since that's over the race mileage,I know others will disagree with me though.

Just began training this week...after taking off 2 1/2 months. I did 2 runs of 4 miles, two days apart. I remembered just how much "fun" it is to begin again :rotfl2: but I was able to get my second run at a 10:58 average :cool1:pace

We leave for WDW on Friday. We will be staying off for a few days and then a week at AoA. Did anyone ever run at AoA? Is there a course that includes Pop and AoA? Our days are usually packed or I am asleep...but just in case.

ran my 5 miles today, much is more than ive ever run before, actually i ran 5.38 i did it in a little over a 13.5 mile pace.. which really isnt too bad for 90 degree weather and 90% humidity.

Happy Sunday

I did a 11.6 mile race yesterday. What a great race for a few different reasons, the biggest being it was free! :thumbsup2

The one thing I was worried about with it being a free race was refreshment on course. I have not bought a hydration belt yet and was worried I would get thirsty. Luckily there was plenty of water/gatorade stops. The one near mile 10 there was an older woman about 75. When I came up on her, I had fun with her. I said "Are you a sight for sore eyes, I LOVE you!" Gave everyone a big laugh:lmao: I love talking to the water stop people because it is so nice of them to be out there doing that for us. But in this race it seemed like every time I was thirsty along came a water stop. Once stop there was even someone spraying you with a water hose if you needed it, that was cool.

It rained on and off during most of the course, which was actually nice. Kept the temp nice and cool, which was nice with all the hot temps we have had lately.

My final time was 2:10:40 which according to them was a 11:16 pace, but my Nike App said 11:10. I think it said I ran 11.7 miles, but I know I ran across the street a few times to high five it with some small kids who were out there cheering us on. I have small kids and it is so fun to see their faces when you make them feel special.

aggielawyer - I think it would be fine to do a half instead of the 14 for your training. I think 13.1 is close enough and you should be ok. JMHO.

heyitsmejosh - That pace in that heat deserves a big :thumbsup2. Good for you on even getting out there in that heat. Great job!

Capeseal - Great job on the distance! :cool1: I play that mental game with myself a lot! :lmao: I know my body can do it, it is more about convincing my head. Congrats!!!!

You can run all around the lake between the two resorts. Each resorts walkways are connected by a bridge over the lake. Whenever I'm there there's always people out running. Depending on the mileage you need I'm sure you can add some distance running in between buildings at either resort too. Hope that helps!

I didn't know you could go all the way around the lake at AoA. Thought it was like Seven Seas Lagoon. That is good to know. I always see joggers at Coronado Springs on the paths so I guess it is acceptable at all resorts.

@ aggielawyer. Last W&D was my first race over a 5K and during training we never ran past 9 miles in training. Not saying I know more or could offer the most expect advice...but that was my experience. We ended up with a 13:14 pace which included lots of photo stops.

Man, this Florida humidity is killer this summer... It's really just frustrating me actually!!! I feel like I'm gonna be a rockstar when this humidity goes down! This am my friend and I were scheduled for our 6 mile run doing the JG plan. We started at 7 and by the time we finished around 830 it was 97 percent humidity with an apparent temp of 94 degrees-- YUCK! Thank goodness for my hydration belt!! We ended up doing a 13:50 pace. We started out our first mile doing 1130, but as the heat and humidity started to rise we had to take it down a notch. We ended up doing 6.1 miles. It wasn't pretty, but we did it!!!

Agreed! I'm in Jacksonville FL and the humidity is killing me! I started yesterday at 6:45 am and once I saw that sun coming up I wanted to cry! I keep telling myself, think of how much faster you'd be if the humidity wasn't here! lol Hang in there, and yes hydration belt even for short runs becomes your bff!

Got my 6.5k in for this week's Saturday run (4 miles) in 49:40 (about 12:17 per mile). Getting there!! Hope everyone got their weekend run in!

I think I'm gonna have to start running in the middle of the night so its at least a little cooler-- probably will still be humid though!! We are gonna be rockstars come November lol!

It's still humid here then, although I do usually run around that time, but morning was the only time I could coordinate with my training buddy this weekend :(

Great job on your 5 mile run!

Well, the after party admission is included in your registration for the half. Not certain what you mean by worth it? I suggest if you want to get the most enjoyment out of it that you train well and run a somewhat conservative pace so that you feel strong and ready to party after :). I know I was only able to train for ToT for less than a month before the race and that, combined with the weather conditions, made it hard for me to do anything but stumble back to my hotel to shower after the run.

I do agree, the humidity is lower around 7/8 at night usually. Although,it's 11:30 pm and my current feels like temperature is still 96 degrees!
