The Official 2013 Wine and Dine Half Marathon Thread

Going to vouch that the nights aren't much better. In S.Florida and ran after 8pm tonight and lord....after my scheduled 3miler I still feel nauseous hours later. I completed it and didn't really care about time just wanted to complete the damn thing. But was physically exhausted from all that humidity. To think that the mileage is only going to climb from here on out. Ugh. I don't remember training for the Princess being as taxing on the body this early on.

trying to follow the training guide for first timers - did my 5 mile run today anyone else?

My DH and I are trying do decide if the post party is worth it - any advice from people who have participated in years past?

I loved the after party. We stayed until it closed at 4am and then walked back to the Beach Club (best decision ever to stay there). We rode Soarin' 5 times without getting off the ride, and Future World was empty but all the rides were open and World Showcase was just a giant party filled with runners.

Having said that, the lines for food were long by midnight when I finished and the entrance area to world showcase was packed. If you want food other than what's offered at the food & wine kiosks, then you definitely have to bring something because all the stores and restaurants are closed up.

But I'd definitely plan on staying and my sister and dad both agreed it was worth their buying tickets and my sister is running it with me this year as her first 1/2 and I already told her to train so we can stay til closing again.

Good Monday morning everybody!:wave2: Is it just me and does it seem to be an unusually "dragging a** kind of day? :faint: I actually set the alarm to get up at 5am for some sprint intervals on the elliptical, but after not sleeping for more than three hours last night, it was a useless attempt.:scared: However, I did manage to get my 5 miles in yesterday at a snail's pace, thanks to the lovely south FLA heat at 10am :crazy2:. And now the nerves are setting in as I had a twinge of my good old ITBS in what is supposed to be my "good" knee!:scared1: As soon as I felt it coming on I stopped, stretched for a few seconds and continued on. It didn't bother me again after that, but darn if it's not right back in my brain again. I can't go through the next 96 days wondering if that ball is going to drop again. At least I have exercises and stretches to do along with my chiro and MT visits. Of course, I just logged in 260 something miles on these shoes too, which I suspect may have somethng to do with it. :confused3 Well, off to Runner's Depot I go! :thumbsup2

Two question for the experienced runners:

First, since my long runs are increasing I'm getting irritation/blisters on the creases underneath my big toes. Today I used some moleskin and it worked well on one of them, not so well on the other. I'm sure with better placement it would be fine, but do you have any other tricks for these random spots?

Second, my last long run before the race is 14 miles on 10/26. My brother and SIL are running a half to raise money for their adoption that day. Would it be bad to do a half instead of the training? I could probably figure out a way to add in that last mile, if needed. I'm super nervous about being able to meet the pacing requirement at Disney and I think this might be a good dry run. Thoughts?

The half should make a fine substitute for the training distance.

I totally agree. If you are planning on checking a bag, I might suggest some baby wipes and a fresh pair of shoes for the after party. Perhaps even something warm to wear after the race. I recall being extraordinarily chilly last year.

Good morning all!

We just got back from vacation on Tuesday. I had grand plans for running during our trip and sketched out what I thought was a reasonable plan...and didn't follow it at all. :crazy2: I managed one short run over our 9 days away, and boy did I pay for it when I got back. I managed to get 15 miles in last week after coming back home but it was rough. Thursday's tempo run in particular was pretty depressing. Lesson learned - make more of an effort to run during vacation! (Something I really need to keep in mind as I have my first-ever cruise coming up during the first week of September...:yay:)

Also, can't believe the 5K sold out! Registration for that one really picked up over the last couple of weeks.

And lastly...has anyone else bought tickets for the after-party? I ordered one for my husband on Saturday and haven't gotten a confirmation number yet. If I don't get one by the end of the day today I'm calling WWoS when they open tomorrow at 9, for sure.

Have a good week everyone!

ETA: Was anyone able to take advantage of the newly released room discount? I tried to re-book our room at FQ but there aren't any discounted ones available...despite the fact that the discount JUST came out and FQ is listed. Our other options for moderate host resorts were CBR (not really interested in that one, would have been $100 less) or Riverside (would have been $10 more), so I guess we're staying put and paying rack rate. That's a first for us, not getting some kind of discount, but at least we have our APs from January and have Disney Visa rewards to cover all of our dining. :)

Struggled through 4 miles yesterday. Temp was 79 but humidity was upwards of 85% Painful. Made me doubt I could do 13.1! :sad1:

On the upside, even though I doubt I'll dress up for W&D; I just think I'm too sensory oriented to run in costume but at Walmart, I found the coolest "grapey" purple running shirt and capris. So at least I'd be "themed"!

And I got new shoes. Someone suggested I try the Brooks PureGrit to get my stride off my heels. So we'll see how they do.

I'm set for 12.5 on Saturday. :scared:

pixiedust: for your IT bands! I know exactly what you mean. I was really nervous about this weekend's run for some reason. Well, it was the first time I'd gone past 5 miles since my spring foot injury, so that was probably it. Fortunately, i made it and felt ok yesterday so hopefully I've conquered that demon. Running can be such a mental game. I have 6 scheduled for this weekend, and then next week is a cutback week. But in an effort to keep things more "even" this year, I'm doing two 4-mile mid-week runs instead of 3 miles. Keep stretching and rolling and icing! :rolleyes2

We weren't able to get the new discount either, but I'm still hoping for an AP discount. But we do have a AAA rate, so at least it's a little bit off.

And thanks for bringing up after party tickets. I totally forgot to get my DH a ticket. I'd better get on that.

I did 5 miles this weekend too! NOW it feels a little more "real"! I run 5 mile runs outside of training, but suddenly when you can't skip it or make any excuses, it makes the race seem closer. Yay!

i run around 7 or 8 when its still light out but the heat and humidity start to drop

I've found this to be true for me this year as well. But I'm not in FL, i'm in Western PA. But I've been looking at the weather lately thinking I might try to start running before work and when I see the choice of 93% humidity at 6am (and sun, and 70 degrees), vs 50% or 60% humidity, a setting sun, and 78 degrees at 8pm, I choose 8pm every time. On the weekends when I've gone out in the morning, it takes me 2 hours just to cool down my body temp after my run, despite running slower and taking more breaks and drinking more water/powerade. Hopefully we will have ideal weather for the W&D again this year. Last year was great!

OH! I totally forgot about AP discounts. Fingers crossed! :goodvibes

I still haven't heard anything about the ticket I purchased...I definitely want to get that taken care of soon since the price goes up in a couple of weeks.

We're having weirdly awesome weather here in Ohio...it feels like early fall! Today's high is 73 degrees and it looks like highs will be in the upper-70s for the rest of the week with a few days in the low 80s. Love it! :thumbsup2

Everyone dealing with the heat and humudity...hang in there! It'll make you stronger for the race - but be careful about hydration, sunscreen, etc.!

Great job on your 5 mile run!

Well, the after party admission is included in your registration for the half. Not certain what you mean by worth it? I suggest if you want to get the most enjoyment out of it that you train well and run a somewhat conservative pace so that you feel strong and ready to party after :). I know I was only able to train for ToT for less than a month before the race and that, combined with the weather conditions, made it hard for me to do anything but stumble back to my hotel to shower after the run.

Hmm I guess my DH and I were confusing the pre-race taste (the ticketed event) and the post party. I believe what my DH was wondering was if the event at lights! Motors! (which upon further digging is the pre-party) is worth the $80. We enjoy all things Disney, but I am wondering if we should try to get into a wine and dine ticketed event over this one, or if this is a not to be missed thing.

Thanks for your feed back everyone! And good luck with this week's runs!

This is the first year for the pre-race taste at the W&D weekend so I have no clue if it's worth it or not. In my registration euphoria, I bought us tickets for it, so we're going but.... who knows if it's worth it. :confused3

Are you referring to the other food and wine festival events? If you can go to one of those, I would say that might be more exciting or "worth it". I've never been though - and wouldn't chance my stomach on too much wine or cheese before running W&D so I guess we won't be going to any this year either. :sad1:

yes I think we figured we wouldn't over indulge, but there are a few events that looked interesting especially the french lunch thing on Fridays and the food and wine pairing on Thursdays.

since I've never attended any of the F&W fest events, I can't speak from experience, however, I would probably pick the food and wine pairing or french lunch over the pre-race taste. Which now makes me think "D'oh!" for registering for the party! We're not getting there until late on thursday though, so it would only be Friday events that we could do. Last year we arrived around 10pm on Friday, so that's why I didn't even think to check the F&W events this year!

So since Disney already has a direct line to my bank account this year thanks to runDisney and their special challenges and medals, maybe I should add food and wine festival events to our plan and give them the rest of my savings.... Can you say Tequila lunch on Friday, Parisian breakfast on Saturday, Italian lunch on Monday??? :thumbsup2

Seriously though, I need to look into this more. :coffee:

alright im running both TOT and Wine and Dine i'm trying to figure out how to switch around my plan, ive been using the JG beginner plan for wine and dine (i figured id go with that since my goal is 13.1 and not just 10 miles) anway my issue is on the plan it has an 11 mile run the week before the TOT i really dont think thats a good idea to run that far a week before the race.

so i'm not really sure what to do with my plan to make it work out a little better. i could just switch the weeks but then im running 10 one week and 12.5 the next week while only running 3 two weeks in a row so that doesnt seem like a good idea either.

I'm not running the TOT, but I am running a 10k the week before the TOT and so I modified my training plan a bit. I'm using a hybrid of Hal Higdon/Jenny Hadfield and Jeff's plans (not really beginner, but not really pushing too hard on the time improvement front either). Anyhow, here's how the rest of my weeks go, starting with next saturday:
6 (LSD)
3 (intervals)-
7 (LSD
3.5 (intervals)
8 (LSD)
4 (intervals)
9 (LSD)
6.25 (10k race)
6 (easy) - This would be your TOT weekend - so 10
9.5 or 10 (LSD) - For you, maybe do 5 or 6 at an easy pace
5 (intervals) - Here, I'd suggest maybe 8.5
11 or 11.5 (LSD)
5 (easy)
W&D

I think you'd need to somehow switch up your on and off long run weeks. If you did 5 this past weekend, maybe go to 5.75 or 6 this weekend and then you'd be on the long-short-long weeks alternating plan that Jeff does if you like that approach vs. the building for a few weeks then a cut back (such as Higdon).

I'm not a coach, I just love planning things and am constantly tweaking my training plans! :) I love reading other people's plans too - so much to learn!

Thanks for helping me try to work it!! i actually ran 5.38 this weekend so bulding up a little higher next week wouldnt be that big of a deal but my issue with switching it up this early is that ill be on a cruise on the 24th so i need to leave that week as an easy week since doing 3 miles while on a cruise is easy and no big deal.. doing 8 would just be awful

so starting with the weekend of the 31st i need to find a place to make a switch
this is what i have right now on the plan, im just trying to figure out where to make the switch
3 (this week)
6.5
3 (cruise)
8
3
9.5
3
11
3 (tower of terror)
12.5
3
14
3
Wine and Dine

Hmmmm. That's a tough one. I would say maybe if u can switch it up somehow to space the long runs just over two weeks apart (like the Sunday or Monday after your cruise (or before- sorry I don't have a calendar nearby) that would be one option. Does that make sense? like a 10 day cycle instead of 14? A second option would be:
6-6.5-3-7-8-3-9-3-tot10-3-8-11-3-w&d13
Just make sure you get your weekday runs in too!

Honestly I'm a bit stumped! Maybe others will have another option!

And if all else fails, I've done 8 miles on a treadmill, so if you HAD to do it on the cruise, you could. Just think of the limitless desserts you can have!

Prepping for the MJJ5K was able to go 45 minutes at a 4 MPH pace today. did the math when I got home and actually need 4.2 MPH to complete 5K in 45 minutes. I plan to up the speed and continue power walking every day this week on the treadmill. Will try to add light jogging on the track next week

I have a couple of questions about the expo stuff for anyone who might know... I'm planning park time for Thursday and Friday before the race, with a big breakfast on Saturday morning at tusker. Will I have plenty of time to hit the expo after breakfast AND get rested the rest of the day? What kind of time should I allow to get staged for the start?

Also, W n D will be my 13th 13 in '13. If you care to, check my blog: www.snellsracechase.wordpress.com

This is similar to my plan this year. Last year we arrived Friday and I slept in Saturday, had brunch around 10:30/11, hit the expo around 12:30/1, drove the course (I wanted to be "prepared mentally") and then found a subway to get my pre-race dinner for later. Spent the afternoon resting in my room, ate around 5, then I left for the race at 7. I don't nap well, so I slept in that day instead of trying to nap. I didn't spend a ton of time at the expo booths tho- mostly bib pick up, gift card pick up for DH, and then a couple of race merchandise items so I didn't need too much time at the expo. I hear the princess and marathon weekend expos are much more crowded! You do have to walk around almost ALL of WWoS to get everything (bib, shirt, etc) which is their way of ending the ride in the "gift shop"! Lol.
