The Official 2013 Wine and Dine Half Marathon Thread

I have a couple of questions about the expo stuff for anyone who might know... I'm planning park time for Thursday and Friday before the race, with a big breakfast on Saturday morning at tusker. Will I have plenty of time to hit the expo after breakfast AND get rested the rest of the day? What kind of time should I allow to get staged for the start?

Also, W n D will be my 13th 13 in '13. If you care to, check my blog: www.snellsracechase.wordpress.com

The expo closes at 3 or 4 on Saturday afternoon. So it all depends upon how much time you want to relax/nap before the race. But it should be doable without any modification.

Tuesday 45 done amidst some hip pain. It wasn't pretty, and I had a little more walking time than usual, but it's done!

My husband came down with a cold last weekend, and now I have it. It's not bad at all, but it definitely cut into my sleep last night so I'm calling today an unscheduled rest day. I slept in, skipped today's scheduled 3-miler and am pushing it to Sunday.

In other news...

I mentioned yesterday that I'd ordered my husband's finish line party ticket on Saturday and had not gotten a confirmation email yet. Today I (unsuccessfully) tried to find a number to call to get things straightened out and ended up emailing DisneySportsTickets@disneysports.com instead. This made me a bit uneasy because, I don't know, I just felt like I'd rather talk to someone on the phone and know it was fixed. HOWEVER, I got my confirmation 25 minutes later along with a follow-up to make sure it went through! :thumbsup2 The follow-up email said they'd been having problems with confirmations not going out over the weekend, so if anyone is missing theirs make sure to follow-up! I emailed back with another question and got a response less than 15 minutes later...very glad to have that settled.

Countdown is in the double digits, people! Yay! :yay:

Hi everyone!

Congratulations to all on all of the great training runs you're reporting - awesome job!!! You're keeping me so inspired!! :thumbsup2

Just wondering if anyone has seen the medals for this year's events yet. Any change in the design / ribbon colour?

When I finally ran the Princess half I was looking forward to royal purple or regal blue or princess pink. It was lime green. Not my favourite princess colour! :sad2:

However the bling is the thing, so I'll be happy just to have the medal! :cheer2:

Have a great run tonight!

pixiedust: for your IT bands! I know exactly what you mean. I was really nervous about this weekend's run for some reason. Well, it was the first time I'd gone past 5 miles since my spring foot injury, so that was probably it. Fortunately, i made it and felt ok yesterday so hopefully I've conquered that demon. Running can be such a mental game. I have 6 scheduled for this weekend, and then next week is a cutback week. But in an effort to keep things more "even" this year, I'm doing two 4-mile mid-week runs instead of 3 miles. Keep stretching and rolling and icing! :rolleyes2

I have to say I've been a bad princess: with the exercises and stretching so I'm hoping that was part of the reason. When I went for my weekly cracking/massage yesterday, my normally loose lower back wouldn't budge, which the doc thinks may have been part of the problem. After the massage of a lifetime, I feel much better going into tonight's run.

My plan looks like this:

9/7 - 5k race
9/10&12 - 3 miles (already doing this now)
9/14 - 5 miles
9/17 - 3 miles
9/19 - 4 miles
9/21 - 6 miles
9/24&26 - 4 miles
9/28 - 6 miles
10/1&3 - 4 miles
10/6 - 7 miles
10/8 - 4 miles
10/10 - 5 miles
10/13 - 7 miles
10/15 - 4 miles
10/17 - 5 miles
10/20 - 8 miles
10/22 - 4 miles
10/24 - 5 miles
10/27 - 10 miles
10/29&31 - 4 miles
11/2 - 7 miles
11/4&6 - 3 miles

Not worried about hitting 13 during training as the distance isn't a problem. Think I overdid it with too many miles last year and want to keep these IT's happy.

And thanks for bringing up after party tickets. I totally forgot to get my DH a ticket. I'd better get on that.

:scared1: Ordered those when I registered. :thumbsup2

Hopefully we will have ideal weather for the W&D again this year. Last year was great!

Yes it was!::yes::

Are you referring to the other food and wine festival events? If you can go to one of those, I would say that might be more exciting or "worth it". I've never been though - and wouldn't chance my stomach on too much wine or cheese before running W&D so I guess we won't be going to any this year either. :sad1:

I hit up one of the Party for the Senses years ago. It was worth every penny back then. I noticed the price has gone up quite a bit, but at least back then, it was worth it.
;)

So since Disney already has a direct line to my bank account this year thanks to runDisney and their special challenges and medals, maybe I should add food and wine festival events to our plan and give them the rest of my savings.... Can you say Tequila lunch on Friday, Parisian breakfast on Saturday, Italian lunch on Monday??? :thumbsup2

Seriously though, I need to look into this more. :coffee:

...and I came back with a vengeance:goodvibes. While on vacation this weekend, I ate whatever I wantedpopcorn:: and didn't do a lick of exercise:headache:. Today, as a reward for running 10 miles last Thursday, I went out and bought my most expensive running shoes ever...Brooks Dyad 7's. I wanted to break them in with a short 3-4 mile run because I didn't want to overdo it after a weekend of sloth and gluttony...OOPS! I did it again:guilty:....I went 6.5 miles:yay:. I even did it at a 12:26 pace:banana:...double bonus!!

Now, I am taking my DD's and nieces (2) and nephew to a baseball game:woohoo:. It's Dime Dogs night...10-cent hot dogs:scared1:! Good thing I ran the extra miles:lmao:.

I love my Brooks Dyads! Mine are 6's and getting worn, need to invest in a new pair before the fall really kicks in, but they've held up well. Hope yours work just as great for you!

I got in just under 3 on Monday. Once again it isn't the humidity or heat, but the sun beating down on me that seems to do me in the worst. Gonna go for another record this weekend, which for me will be 8... will see how it goes! :) I seem to have figured out the water rations that work best for me, and how to manage more than one bottle of water/ staying cool on long runs, but am still working on fuel. So far I like Gatorade chewies the best, just wish I could get some in grape LOL. I've heard I need to get the jelly belly ones, but they don't have those at Kroger. I know if I go into the running store, I'm going to wind up spending more $$ than I need to right now but I guess I'll break down eventually!

So far my time is fluctuating between 12- 13.5 / mile, which I'm happy with. My long run on Friday was 5 miles in an hour- not my fastest ever, but gave me hope that I'm improving.

had a slight setback today i tried to go out and start my run and my inner calf was in a lot of pain (not shin splints just a lot of tightness), so i stretched it out and it felt a little better and but it came backand started to hurt a lot after 5 minutes or so.. so i decided to just hit the elliptical for 30 minutes (which was pain free) instead. so right im icing down my calfs hoping i can run thursday.

This happens to me if I add mileage or speed too quickly, or when I'm starting in new pair of shoes (same style, not new style). My left foot has less over pronating than my right so it gets sore when I break in new stability shoes. I tend to get relief from a small hand held massager, a firm foam ball, and ice. Good luck!

I did buy his ticket today so I'm good! Yay!!!

Does that mean you approve of my food and wine festival plans??? Lol!

Excited to report I am staying at Yacht Club after the race!

i havent even booked my room yet for this race or the TOT, now that the AP discounts for the fall have finally come out i should be on that

I went into work yesterday and someone asked me how I was doing and before remembering that they weren't runners I said, "Oh man, my IT band is like, sooooo tight and my quads, forget it." He just meant it in that generic sense but I'd spent the whole night thinking about how my legs felt like lead so yeah. It felt good to look here and see the language being spoken. :)

I tried some random IT band stretch I found online but I didn't feel anything really stretching. I don't know if it's the sudden addition of rowing to my routine or not, but my legs have been less and less useful lately.

Oh honey, you are in SUCH the perfect company here!! :lmao: :rotfl2:

I found the best stretches are crossing the bad leg (or in my case both :scared1:), slightly behind the good leg. Then bend your body (like a bow) to open up the affected side of the body. You should feel a good stretch all the way from your oblique down the side of the IT. You may also want to look up the pigeon yoga pose. Talk about a hip opener! And iceiceiceiceice and foam roller. It'll hit hurt but it will also break up any scar tissue that's trying to form. Anything that can help open up the hip flexors along with building up the muscles around the IT (glutes, adductors, quads) will help. Hope this helps! :goodvibes

Did 4 miles this morning in a light rain. It felt pretty good but I was bummed that I didn't have time to squeeze in 6 miles. I missed my 3-mile run yesterday due to some schedule conflicts and a general lack of motivation because my legs still felt sore from a very difficult hike on Sunday. I was a little slow today but felt like I had a good rhythm and a lot of energy left when I finished. I am going to get in one or two more 3 mile runs this week and then do 7 miles on Sunday since we will be traveling today through Saturday.

I tried on some shoes at a running store on Monday that were supposed to be excellent for people with disc issues. I forget what brand they were but the cushioning was incredible, like running on sand even when pounding the sidewalk outside the store. Unfortunately, they felt very wide and loose on my feet. (And I just bought a new pair of Nike Frees and a new pair of the brand new Nike Kiger trail running shoes (which are really sweet!) so I definitely don't need a new pair of sneakers right now. I may try to investigate further to see if I can find a narrow, light, flexible shoe with tons of cushioning in the future, though.

Hope everyone has a great Wednesday and that the rest of your weekly runs are fast and injury free :)

Hi everyone!

I wanted to post a couple of comments and questions based on the most recent pages of the thread:

BOOKING ROOMS:
Ya'll who haven't done this yet should get on it. I slacked, and wanted to stay Poly, and because Disney is currently offering a 30% room only discount during the Wine&Dine 1/2, the ENTIRE RESORT is sold out. Nada. Same with Beach, Yacht, and Boardwalk. I ended up getting Animal Kingdom club level rooms for DH/myself, and mom/dad but if you want to stay deluxe get your room NOW.

PARK HOPPER TICKETS:
So, in an interesting turn of events, my parents and DH/myself decided to extend our vacation, coming in Monday 11/4 instead of Friday, 11/8. This is me not complaining at ALL, however I already purchased 2 day PH tickets for DH/myself through RunDisney. I now want to get 5 day PH tickets instead. Is there anyone that needs 2 day PH tickets at the RunDisney price? Because adding on 3 days to our 2 day is more money for me than selling what I paid for 2 day and getting brand new 5 day. Please email me directly at careymc28 (at) msn (dot) com if you want to buy them from me. I paid $291.82 and would take a $290 paypal payment or something to send them on to you. They are plastic tickets with no names assigned (or dates even, I am pretty sure). I won't even charge any shipping.

WINE & DINE FESTIVAL:
I would love to hear other's stories regarding the special experiences, because since we are all going to be there for the last week of it we thought some of them sounded like fun. Specifically considering the Parisian Breakfast and maybe the Teppan Edo expensive 6 course dinner. None of us drink really at all so the WINE part if kind of a waste. But aside from that, any suggestions welcomed.

RUNNING:
Yay for everyone and their training! I did a 5K on the treadmill with intervals but averaged a 12:00 minute per mile pace, which I am pleased with. With about 90 days to go, I think I can get into my 10:30 goal and maybe beat my time two years ago!

:) - Carey

Okay everyone get ready to step of your game! Someone just broke a 14 minute mile tonight, oh yeah :)

:lmao: Same here... I forget that some folks at work don't want to hear about the fact that I "did some extra stretching for my tight left leg" or that "I'm figuring out just about how much fuel I need to take for my next long run." They have to respond with socially acceptable comments like, "Oh, that's nice".

My left IT band gets fussy and I roll it. I want to invest in a good foam roller, but haven't done it yet. I currently use a frozen water bottle and a small poky roller from Target. I wish I knew if a roller vendor was gonna be at the Expo.
