The Official 2013 Wine and Dine Half Marathon Thread

I ran further today than I ever have before! 8.13! My training plan had a 5 miles but crazy me signed up for a 12 miler that is in 2 weeks so I felt like I needed to up my mileage to get a little closer to 12. I did a trail run for the first time and really liked it. We'll see how my body will feel about it tomorrow. Running around my neighborhood gets so boring so the thought of running 8 on the streets sounded horrible. I need to find some other places to run to mix it up some more. I felt great about my run - I finished just over 1.5 hours which was quicker than I thought I'd be able to do it. :cool1:

Getting more and more excited about the W&D day by day. BTW - is anyone else addicted to looking for other races to run? I've created a spreadsheet to keep track of races that look fun or interesting. I think I'm a little nuts.

So I just wanted to throw out something on this thread real fast. I'm not competing in this year's race (poo) BUT I have decided to run 2014's race (my first Disney race!) and hopefully the Disney Marathon in 2015. I loved browsing through this thread and it gets me pumped to amp up my training (I have plenty of time haha!) But great job to everyone who's training is improving! :thumbsup2:cool1: Can't wait to be on a similar thread for next year's race!

Yes! I am! Although I used up my whole run-cation budget on disney races next year already so ill be looking local for a bit. I'd really like to do the shamrock race in va beach someday, rock n roll Vegas, one in DC, and a bunch others!

And congrats on your run! I actually like hitting that 8 mile distance. It was amazing to reach it last fall for the first time! Way to go!

The Shamrock Race is awesome. Super fast course, mostly flat, sometimes wind at your back, sometimes at your side. And an incredible after party on the beach under a tent, live bands, Yuengling beer and Irish Stew. Always a guaranteed good time.

Hmmmm....my head is spinning as I try to solve this riddle. I'm going to have to defer to Dr. Who's theory on time to answer your question. "People assume that time is a strict progression of cause to effect, but *actually* from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint - it's more like a big ball of wibbly wobbly... time-y wimey... stuff."

Substitute "time" for "Beer and running."

Dr. Who...to understand this you need to be above a certain age, but we will jus call it 29 :)

I'm doing some Yin Yoga this morning to stretch out my back. It wasn't on my schedule, but I was going to run today to get a jump on training this week. (I like to do one of my short runs on Sunday, when I can, as insurance against any missed runs during the week.) Anyway, I woke up to rain so took it as a sign to take it easy :)

Hahaha, I guess so? DH and I watch the reboot series. Haven't seen the stuff that ran from the 60's-80's. But, yes, I am over 29 :)

Made my 11 miles yesterday. After listening to the Mickey Miles podcast and hearing Jeff Galloway suggest that if you're unhappy with your time/pace, to reduce your run/walk intervals, I tried it and came in 1:13 FASTER/mile than my 9.5 mile run two weeks prior.

I still feel like I'm super slow and part of me feels bad for walking what amounts to 1/3 of the course.

But, in the end, I suppose it matters that I cross the finish line (or in this case, my driveway) strong and feel like I can manage the parks after. Yesterday was a little rough on my feet but after a mediocre night's sleep and staying in my shoes all day, I feel good.

Glad I accomplished it. At mile 10.5, I got a little misty-eyed knowing that I was gonna make it!

A huge congratulations to everyone who finished distance runs this weekend. Loved hearing about all of your accomplishments. Especially those who set personal distance records or ran their longest distance in a very long time :yay:.

Are those running longer distances right now using the Galloway method? Training for races that come before Wine and Dine? Just wondering since my "long" run this week was 4 miles and I'm starting my training about 2-3 weeks earlier than I need to for a 12-week training schedule. (Planning to repeat a couple of weeks.)

I have a half the last Saturday in Sept prior to Wine and Dine,so that's why I am up to 7. :)
You seem to be on target for W&D!

I am about 8 weeks ahead for W&D. I struggled with my 5k-10k bridge AND had an injury. So I left myself plenty of time in case I struggled again or got reinjured. I was convinced it was going to be chronic. :scared::scared::scared:

I'm happy to say that the 10K-half bridge has been much easier AND so far, I've remained whole!

I might maintain 8-10 miles and work on speed until closer to the race.

Back from vacation, I went out for a 6 mile loop. It went "ok" only, with some leg pain that took the fun out of the first 30 minutes. Then I got warmed up and the rest of the run felt better. At about 4.6 miles, something shaped like a Jack Russell attacked me! I'm happy to report that I had enough energy to leap forward so that the beast's teeth only caught the netting in the heel of my Sauconys. Her owner subdued her ("Chloe", he called her... what a sweet name.:rolleyes2) and she turned back to her yard. I kept on running, and finished out my last mile and a half feeling pretty strong.

I also read every RunDisney trip report (thanks Ariel 484 and ZellyB for your TRs) that I could find while on vacation. Found those to be AWESOMELY inspiring!

Thanks to everyone for posting their updates. It's a great help to me.

I couldnt get an answer on the facebook page so hopefully someone here may know: Do I have to stay at one of the "official" hotels to use the busses for the run? My family has reservations at AoA so we could easily walk over to Pop Century for the bus. Do they check room keys or something when you board the bus?

I tried something new today...I ran with DH! After work (at 8:00pm), we decided to go for a short run. We settled on 3 miles but he said he was going to run the whole way. Since I do intervals, I didn't think I'd be able to keep up with him. He usually does the shorter distances at a 9-9:30 pace and I am lucky if I can get under 12:00. I decided to try so we took off, no warmup walk for me either. At about the 11-minute mark, I had to call a 2-minute walk. My chest was so tight I had to hit my inhaler and grab a sip of water. The two minutes were enough and we took off running again. I needed one more 2-minute walk at the 22-minute mark. I took another inhaler hit and a little more water an kept on trucking. We got back home and I was so impressed. We did 3.25 miles in 36:00 flat...an 11:05 pace! Yes, he went slow for me, but that is by far my best time AND I had 4 minutes of walking in there too. There's no way I could have gone any further at that pace. I felt mentally great but physically crummy afterwards so I know I pushed myself a little too hard. It was fun, but I don't think I need to make it a regular occurrence.

Don't believe so. I'm staying at Dolphin and plan on walking over to the closest resort in that area to get the bus.

Hi everyone! On vacation and just getting caught up reading through posts. Good work on training- sounds like everyone is doing well! I started my training plan this past week, it's a mix of Jeff Galloway and my running coach so that I can build speed and endurance for a race weekend in Sept, hopefully to get a good enough time to get out of that last corral! Did my long run today (10k or 6.21 miles) and pulled off my best 5k time at 37:07 and then finished the full 10k at 1:18:03. I was pleased with that, for where I am and the hills on the route I ran (vacation- great view of the ocean but a lot more hills than I would like!) managed to eek out a 7:48 average pace per kilometre (12:34 per mile). Not bad!

Another vacationer here. Seems like a lot of us were on vacation last week. Everyone ready to get back into the groove? ;)

I did manage to get in my 3.2 last weekend and then did a run/fast walk on Thursday for 4.61 miles, more than I needed to so it made up for not going on Tuesday. I was supposed to go for 5.5 last night, but only did 3.2. One because the kids went with me and they can't go as far and Two because this Saturday I am doing a no fee race of 11.6 miles and I am only supposed to do 3. Figured I could 'slack' off a bit.

Kristenrice - Awesome job! :thumbsup2 Congrats on the pace!

Capeseal, I am using Galloway, but I am having to modify. I am using the marathon training for January right now which is more miles than W&D, plus I have a 1/2 in September, probably October (just need to sign up) and as I said a 11.6 this Saturday.

Dmross - Glad you are ok. Bad Chloe!!!

I'm doing the same for Tower of Terror. They don't ask to see room keys, as long as you show up and board at a host hotel there's no problem.

Hey everyone! Have a training question for the more experienced runners... I'm doing the Wine & Dine half as my first race. Unfortunately, 2 weeks into training (last week), I fractured/twisted my ankle enough to keep me from running for a week or so. My last "long run" was the 3 mile at 16 sec run/44 sec walk. Here's my question....

Anyone see an issue with picking back up this weekend with the 5 mile run and just slowing my pace to maybe 10/50? Thanks for any advice you have to offer!

No running for me today (yet). It is so nice out, but I ran 4.5 yesterday and my toe still hurts. The second toenail on both feet grows UP, towards the top of my shoe. It doesn't get jammed up in the END of my shoe, it gets crammed up against the TOP of the shoe:headache:. I have no idea how to prevent this:confused3. It's only my second toes (which are not longer than my big toes) which is odd. All of the other toenails grow out...the second toes grow UP. A while back, I'd gone 7 miles and my toes hurt so bad afterwards. The toenails turned black and blue the next day and took about 6 weeks to finally fall off. Now, the second toes on both feet are all black and blue (and really thick:crazy2:??) so I am taking today off and hoping to try and run tomorrow morning before work. I've heard (from the salon that does my pedicures and the folks at the running store) that this is not an uncommon problem, but nobody had any suggestions for me. How about you guys...anyone have this problem? What do you do?

Have you been fitted for running shoes at a running/walking shoe store? You should be wearing at least 1-2 sizes up from your everyday shoe size.

How did your ankle feel after the 16/44 combo? I'd just increase to 3.5 or 4 max, you have plenty of time to catch up on distance.
