The Official 2013 Wine and Dine Half Marathon Thread

I think we just have to find a good way to identify ourselves (green iron on DIS for the back of our shirts?) so we can support each other through this trek.

I like this idea! I ran with the Alzheimer's Association my last race and at one point I was hurting and struggling and one of my teammates came up and gave me a pat on the back and it really helped!

My very first sparkle skirts just came the mail!!!! I ordered a large and may just a smidge tight but I plan on losing a few more lbs before the race so should be all good by then. Of course I ordered two so I can train in one to get used to it before the big race. I haven't even ran in them yet and already want one in each color. Soooooo bad

I did a 9-mile long run on Saturday (18 miles total last week) - my first long run in probably 3 weeks and while the last 3 miles were tough (and mile 9 was slightly painful) I felt sooooo great when I was done. I feel like I am finally out of vacation mode (and have lost the pounds I gained on vacation ) and am back into a training mindset...great timing since I'm going on a cruise in a couple of weeks. :lmao: :yay: I am super terrified to come back from that cruise, like, 10 pounds heavier. I mean, it's free food all the time! I have half marathons scheduled for 9/28 and 10/6 so hopefully I'll keep that in mind and be able to avoid Eye Scream on the Dream for the most part. I am definitely planning on running the Castaway Cay 5K so at least I know I'll get one run in. :thumbsup2

ALSO...I made up a little training plan for my husband to start training for the Jingle Jungle 5K! He's a teacher and also coaches tennis so he's back to school this week and will start pulling 12-14 hour days, so for now we're shooting for 2 days of running per week. I'd really like him to do 3 but this is more realistic for him until tennis season is over. I feel like it's better to have 2 days per week right now rather than 3 just so if he doesn't get the 3rd run in he doesn't feel guilty or whatever. Tennis is over the first week of October so he'll start 3 days per week then. He's super nervous but I know he'll be fine...he's one of *those* people that's in naturally good shape so he'll pick it up quickly. :crazy2: :thumbsup2 I just hope he enjoys the 5K. This will be his first race, at Disney or otherwise. :)

Isn't it crazy how much a weight gain can affect you? I definitely gained a few pounds on vacation over the last week of July. :( I think it's gone for the most part, but I hated how sluggish I felt over the last couple of weeks.

Figment1990 - do you do any strength training? If you do some air squats that may really help your knees out. It does for me! And yes, pacing on long runs is definitely something I struggle with - I find I don't feel too hot for the first 0.5-1 miles of my run but then once I'm warmed up I feel GREAT and it's hard to stay at the long, slow pace. And then I pay for it over the last couple of miles, of course. You are definitely not alone!

AHHH SQUEEEEEE! :yay:

Ugh, chafing is the worst. :( I hope you figure something out for that.

Yeah, I actually do a series of plyo for my legs due to my old tendinitis issues in my knees. They include squats and I completely agree that it is very helpful. And I'm exactly the same about the first mile being cruddy - my miles 3-5 are always the most pleasant! Weird, I know.

After reflecting on it, I think this knee pain was not from running too fast. I seriously felt fine during my run, and immediately after. It wasn't until I went home and squatted down and crawled around looking for a piece of my son's toy that he lost that it started hurting. Perhaps that means I stretched or pulled something a little too much over the top of my kneecap. I'm thinking a little "RICE" and try to just listen to my body for the next week to see how it goes. And pray it goes away quickly!pixiedust:

For those with chafing issues - try Body Glide! It really really really does work! :thumbsup2

Ditch your running partner and keep on keeping on. Running is a purely solo sport and to allow a "teammate" to drag you down is totally unnecessary. I train solo but have run a few times with friends and it's hard. You're trying to keep pace with each other and are contantly thinking about what the other person may be thinking about YOU. When DH and I run races we say "see you at the finish line" and split up and are on our own.

I would suggest keeping up on these boards; join a FB running group, get involved in a community to keep you motivated schedule-wise but ditch the bad influences.

DH and I don't run together either and we definitely don't race together.

I find that I have better luck "training" with a long-distance running friend. And by long distance, i mean we live 5 states apart from each other. :thumbsup2 We go out and run on our own, but then we text/email about it. This way, we motivate each other when we don't feel like running but we don't have to coordinate schedules, pacing, etc. We don't even talk about pacing. The only goal we have in common is to just get out there and run! Otherwise, I run by myself. Which is good b/c when I'm running, all I really want to do is listen to some music, and zone out and not be pulled in a million directions at once like I am all the rest of the day.

And though I saw so many people running with others during the W&D last year, there were just as many people running on their own. I was one of them. I made a friend at the field before the race and it was fun, but then once we started running, I was on my own. Reading people's shirts made me laugh. Looking around at the disney property being amazed at what I was doing kept my spirits up. And a lot of my concentration was taken up with weaving through people, and navigating water stops, embankments, etc. I ran alone, but I never felt alone. (Probably because there were 10,000 other people around me!). The volunteers are spectacular too - really a friendly face just when you need it!:cheer2:

Hk331- Don't let your friend's poor behavior take anything away from your amazing accomplishment. Congratulations on transforming yourself into an athlete! It takes loads of courage and determination to do that and you should feel exhilarated, not depressed and down. I think others gave great advice. You will find LOADS of people running/walking on their own in a Disney race but everyone is so friendly and the race will be so festive and interesting that you have no reason to feel lonely. I train alone and race alone. DH and I have a deal that we complete the first mile together and then we hit our own paces. He's an 8-minute miler and I'm a 10-11 minute miler so it makes sense to let him take it at his pace. I ran ToT "alone" last year and had a blast. I just needed to speak up and engage the other runners around me and most folks were extremely friendly and grateful to "hang out" for a mile or two.

First of all, Congratulations !!!!! on your 5K, what an awesome accomplishment. you say you ran it with your BFF? I think she was having a very bad day to behave so frenemy like. She probably has some of her own issues that she needs to work on. Don't be afraid to train alone or to run it alone. You have already proven you are an athlete- you trained for and ran a 5K!

You say you're slow runner. I'm a slow runner too! but by choice. I can run fast I just choose not too. By running slow it gives all the people starring at me time to drink in my fabulousness :) slow runners have swag and confidence!

Train on! You. Are. Worth. It.

Hk331 no one runs a Disney race alone, no one, well except those really fast types that try to win it, but not the normal folks :) great job on ur 5k, keep focus on positive - this is biggest battle of the half Mary run.

Body glide= best chaffing product out there, only negative, it will ruin your clothing.

Running injuries - number 1 reason for injuries = too many miles too soon. Number 2 reason = not taking proper time to heal. I really like to abide by these rules, wish I could avoid these rules but I am just too thick headed.

Time to do a big restart on nutrition plan, can't call it a diet because that implies it is on for a short time.

Keep on training.

Can someone remind me of the host hotels? Trying to find it on run Disney on my phone is annoying...

I love this! I might get it embroidered on the back of my race shirt!!

I think sometimes we need to remind ourselves that no matter if we finish in 3:30 or 1:30 it was still 13.1 miles! Be proud of yourself and for all your accomplishments:)

so very true, and as a first time runner, every time I go out for a long run I am beating my personal record for distance! :cheer2::cheer2:

Who trains with other people?

I think Hk331's comment made me think about this. I rarely run with other people, and even when I do it's rarely at what I consider "my" pace--it's a hybrid compromise between me and the other runners. I've never run a race with another person and I've never trained consistently with another person.

No one raced with me. No one trained with me. 3 out of 4 times, I show up for a group run and still end up running alone (out of being too slow, not too fast). Despite what Runners' World leads me to believe, is it true that not everyone is in engaged in some long term, hardcore runmance where everything's perfect? I'm really glad I learned to run alone early.

This has got to be the best group of people I know! :grouphug: The amount of support coming from this forum is overwhelming. I can't thank you all enough for taking the time to respond and to remind me of the bigger picture.

And after having the day to process all that has happened I have decided that it would be best to train solo, In fact, this may sound rather naive, but I wasn't aware that running was MOSTLY done solo! :scratchin It completely makes sense now lol.

I've had a heart to heart with my friend and explained to her exactly how I felt and how tearing down my confidence mid race just wasn't okay, and hurtful. The hard part now is she doesn't want to stop running with me, stating that she needs me and wouldn't make it without me. I'm trying to break it to her nicely, telling her that she may find she enjoys her runs more when she is free to run at her own pace.

I'm excited to report that I just signed up for another 5k race happening this Saturday.:woohoo: I feel that 'getting back on the horse' idea is best. This may sound like I'm completely obsessed with Disney, but this 5k is a run around the Minnesota Zoo and my sister and I are going to pretend that we are running through the Animal Kingdom, playing AK theme park music on our iPods. :rotfl2:

I have not given up, and will not give up on Wine and Dine 2013. If I get swept this year then Sign me up for Wine and Dine 2014! :thumbsup2

Any word if they are going to change the design of the W&D medal or are they sicking with the current design from previous years?

If they are sticking to what they normally do,this is the last year for the current design. Although, the ribbon changes, haven't seen any pictures of this years color.

Agree with Jenn310...I'd expect (hope!) that the medal will be similar to how it's been for the last 3 years and that there will be a new design for next year's 5th anniversary race weekend.

With the exception of the occasion where my BF joins me so he can prove to himself he is in shape, I train alone. I like it that way. Running is my "me" time. Its when I decompress and let the day's stresses fade away.

I would think that they are going to keep with their tradition of changing every fifth year. The ribbon has changed each year though. I'll post a pic from the Dumbo Double Dare expo, I am fairly certain it will be on display then.

Great, good luck! :) That's a super cute idea to play your AK park music in the zoo. I like running to park loops too. :thumbsup2

That would be awesome! Thanks in advance. :yay:

No problemo! I'm really looking forward to seeing the medals for Marathon Weekend 2014 (especially the Minnie & Dopey)

Me too! (Even though no Dopey for me until 2015 )...new medals for all 4 races this year right? Excitement! :hyper:
