The Office Rumor Mill: A Glorious Thing to Behold!

I got married in October, and finaly HR made my name change official. We have proper name e-mail addressing, so IT has to change my e-mail address, and HR has to process my new name for all my benifits (insurance, 401k, etc.). So, rumor of my change of last name makes it's way around the building.

Somewhere along the way, someone gets it wrong and suddenly, I'm changing my name because I just got DIVORCED, not married! It got back to me when my boss let me know of my "failed" marriage!

I know I can't be the only one that something like this has happened to. So, what are some interesting "things" that you've done, according to the office rumor mill?

We have one neighbor who swears a different couple in our neighborhood are splitting up every couple of months.

The one that made me laugh was when someone whispered to me that J & B were going away for the weekend -- together. I responded that I thought it was okay since they were married.

The one that did NOT make me laugh was when I heard that I was sleeping w/one of the guys at work -- cuz I had gone out to lunch w/him twice.

We have 2 attorneys and 2 secretaries in my office...not much there for a rumor mill.

My favorite was when I was quitting, some people were convinced it was because I was pregnant.

By the time I left, the joke w/in my friends was that I was going to have 7 kids and of course needed to stay home.

I'm not sure how the rumor started, but it amused me

Well, there was that thread about the woman whose husband went along with the rumor that she was pregnant. That was weird.

My last job there was a rumor long before I quit that I was going to. Gee. Maybe because the director's response to my announcement that I was pregnant was that she couldn't give me a discount on tuition for the infant program. (I was a preschool teacher at the time.) Hmmm, $180 a week for daycare when I make $8.50 an hour? That was pretty much a no brainer.

There are very few women that work in my department. If you listened to all the rumors I have dated just about everyone so far. I just laugh it off I am used to it by now.

well I did have one neighbor (the street instigator) who would tell me all sorts of things about another neighbor, she was always moving, being evicted, getting divorced, etc. The other neighbor was always so grateful when I told her what the future held for her! Luckily she thought it was as funny as I did.
