Hey all!

I saw this over in one of the Running World Forums and thought of all of us Princesses who are dealing with humidity:

Here is a "rule of thumb" I found years ago that seems to make sense:

TEMP+DEW POINT (Add the temperature and dew point values together):
=======================================================
Below 100: Ideal
100-120: Not ideal, but ok to go for a fast time
120-130: Ok for fast pace in races up to 10K - adjust for slower pace in longer races
130-150: Adjust for slower pace in all race distances, especially longer races
Above 150: Forget pace - just focus on finishing

FYI - The dew point temperature is the temperature at which air can no longer hold all of its water vapor, and some of the water vapor must condense into liquid water (e.g. condensation in the form of dew, fog, clouds, etc). At 100% relative humidity, the dew point temperature and real temperature are the same, and clouds or fog can begin to form.

While relative humidity is a relative measure of how humid it is, the dew point temperature is an absolute measure of how much water vapor is in the air (how humid it is). In very warm, humid conditions, the dew point temperature can reach 75 to 77 degrees F, but rarely exceeds 80 degrees. By definition, the dew point value cannot be higher than the temperature.

Right now in Gainesville, it is 80* with a 75* dewpoint, so this would be 155 - putting us in the realm of "Just Finish" !! I think that this little formula will help me gauge how I should run my outside runs now. Hope this helps you guys!

Oh good lord - I'm looking at 166! :faint: No wonder we're so miserable down here!

I can't imagine it ever being below 100! :rotfl: My seemingly perfect running conditions yesterday? Still 130. :sad2:

I did a 5k yesterday in 24 minutes after work, then continued with a little side weight training. This was after I did 14.5 miles on Saturday, so I am trying to get the distance back into my legs.

I got my first glimpse at my outfit for this race, and it looks amazing. I found someone that is crafty in the clothes making area to make me a Rapunzel costume, looks so good and close to the movie. She suggested colors and fabrics, I went to confirm them to ensure the correct color, can't wait to try it on, will show pics later if interested.

I'm just trying to get back into the groove of running again, took a couple to many months off. That 5k was a little difficult to finish, great outside though, mid to lower 80s, but high humidity since it just rained before I started. But I'm back on the path to finishing the race comfortably without tiring my legs out.

It is 150 here do that would put me in the just finish category, too!!

I've skimmed over bits of this thread, and have to go back and read it all. Am loving the enthusiasm. Am planning on doing this race with my new hubby. He started running just before our wedding and has lost over 50 pounds. I did run/jog 5Ks (but usually came in near the last) a few years back, but have never done more than 5 miles. And I'm in a lot worse shape now than when we first started dating.

Must be crazy to think I can do this. I told my husband about the "sweeper bus" and now he is paranoid. He has told me we can't stop for character meet n greets or the bus will get us! He runs an 8.5 minute mile... I'm at... twice that right now... :sad1:

This will be my first Princess race and my first 1/2 Marathon. I'm a beginner runner so i am a little bit nervous but I'm really excited about it. I've been going the gym a little bit but I'm starting Galloway's DP training plan a little bit early. Starting tomorrow. At this point my plan is to do intervals of walking and running but goal is to just keep a 15 mpm time. I'm so excited to take part in this this year and I can't wait to get into training. I think I might dress up in a yellow Tutu for Belle! I'm doing a 5K here next month and one in October just so i can get used to be around people! Looking so forward to my first (hopefully of many) Run Disney Events!

Good job. Just keep going and it will all come together!

thanks for the resort tips... i priced out a few with our mil discount so that should do it. i'm really on the fence about trying the 1/2 marathon this year. i am not a runner but this is on my big goal list :thumbsup2 i am not currently in running shape however did a 5k last month with a time of 35 minutes... did i mention im not a runner :) my husband and brother were planning on running with me for this and making a big family trip of it but i'm getting cold feet! reservations look good though so maybe, just maybe i'll commit to the plunge. 13.1 definitely would be a major jump for me!

With that kind of time as a beginner you are most certainly a runner! That is well below pace for the race!!

Everyone that said that it would be easier once it cooled off was so right! I'm not fooling myself thinking that this cool snap will last, but I'll enjoy it while I can. It was 59 degrees when I started, and mid-60s when I got back home. Humidity was still high, but I didn't feel like I was breathing water. :) I compared to an almost identical in length, time of day run, and run/walk intervals from a week ago. Then - 17:45 min mile, and I was really pushing. Today - 15:08, and I was taking it really easy as I took a 5 day break from running. :thumbsup2

I love the cooler weather. Last night it was 66 and a light misty rain when I went out. It was awesome and I felt really good!!

It was one of those things that I kept hearing and thinking people were just saying it to make me feel better. I was amazed today that every time Nancy (my phone) told me to walk, I was amazed that it walking time again already. It was so much easier.

I am kicking myself a little though. I kept repeating days of C25K because they were so hard. I knew I shouldn't be struggling as much as I was, so I figured I needed more time. Now I've only done 2 weeks of C25K in a month.

Don't rush it. You are being smart and you are listening to your body. If you take it at the right pace, it will come together and the training will get easier! Besides as pp said, the Galloway training doesn't even start until October!!

Hi all! I will be running my first half at the PHM :). I am running my first 10k in a few weeks and feeling pretty good for that. I did 5 miles on Saturday in 1:07, 8 minutes better than my goal. There are two large hills where I do my long runs and they slow everyone down. Not sure who I am dressing as, but for now need to focus on the 10k. The course for that is primarily flat so I am working for a 1:05.

DH will be coming with me and we were able to use miles for our flights, great bonus :). Staying at Coronado Springs.

Great time! Good luck with your race. You are going to be looking at a really early corral!

I love this. I might just print it out to remind me. Like right now I think it seems nice out but it is a 134 and that is probably about right since it is a little warm. Good to keep in mind

You can do this. You have a lot of time to train and you can bring your time down in the next 192 days!! Keep it up

This will be my first HM - but I hope it won't be the last!

Thanks Tiny!

Holy crow - 8.5 minute mile? Um, the sweeper bus is the last thing he'll have to worry about! Here is what you do - train for at least a 15 minute mile, doing it however you need to - walk/ run intervals, speed walking, whatever. And you have TONS of time to get faster. Something that will help you is trying really hard to do a fall / winter 10K that would get you in a higher corral, with the faster runners being assigned to the corrals that leave earlier. If you don't put any time down at all, you may be assigned to one of the last corrals which wouldn't really give you a time cushion. But if you could do a 10K and submit that time to RunDisney, it could bump you up a little. The sweepers don't start until the last person in the last corral has crossed the finish line, so if you start in an earlier corral then you will have some time to spare. My friend and I started in Corral C and stopped to take a bazillion pictures. Never saw the first sweeper. Finished in 3:24, and if you work it out that's an average 15:34 pace, including all our picture stops. Part of the trick is to not stop for pics until you get in the MK - all the photo ops you pass on the way to the MK will still be there on the way back to Epcot, so no need to waste precious time while you are still getting warmed up. Also, we pretty much dorked it up at Epcot the day before and got pictures with all the princesses then, so we didn't feel like we HAD to stop with some of the characters during the race. Finally, toward the end when you are very close to Epcot and then in Epcot, there were NO lines for the characters! I think everyone just wanted to be done. Julie and I just wanted pictures! If you want to take a look, my pics from this year are on my blog (look under the month of March) and there are several other princesses here with blogs that have race recaps. Julie did a video of our trip / race on her blog here http://runwalkrepeat.blogspot.com/2012/07/2012-princess-half-marathon-weekend.html So fun! So, I guess this is my long-winded way of saying not to get all bunged up about the sweepers before you really get a lot of training under your belt and see what you can do! You will totally surprise yourself!

Hi all! Just wanted to introduce myself, I'm Kim from Frisco, TX and the DHM will be my first half marathon! I just want to say thank you to everyone for all of your great comments, tips and questions! They are very helpful and insightful!

A little about me, this is my first week for doing the Jeff Galloway conditioning workout schedule, leading up to Jeff's official DHM training schedule and am very nervous and excited all at the same time. I truly believe this will be good for me as I am dealing with a great amount of work stress and it helps to have this to look forward to. I am planning on doing a 5k in October on one of my 3 mile days and then a 10k at the Dallas Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving. And will probably do another 10k or something in December or January, just to get some "Race Day Experience" under my belt before the DHM.

My husband and I will be driving to WDW and then making a great adventure out of it with a few days in Ft. Walton, then a couple in New Orleans on the way home. So, needless to say, I'm excited about the whole trip. I do plan on doing the run solo, unless there are other Frisco, Plano, Dallas area ladies on here that would like to meet up for some runs before hand. Although, I'm a beginner runner, I feel bad about slowing people down.

Well, gotta get to bed early so I can get my run done in the morning. Thanks again and I look forward to reading more!

We've been on a camping trip... just getting back to internet and catching up on this thread. I'm afraid I'm not going to be able to the the Rockfest Half in September. Bummer because it would have been fun to meet some of you New England ladies. My race budget and time away are all getting spent for the Disneyland Half...no more races after that until the Princess.

Completely understand! I REALLY want to do a fall 10K because I don't trust that my Rockfest time will be decent enough to get a better corral placement. But, I haven't found any local that work with my schedule and I'm out of $$ so going out of town for a race is a no-go.

After about a month of being stalled at 5 miles, I finally did a 6 mile run while on vacation. I had to walk a bit (the banking on the side of the road was a bit more than I'm used to here) and stretch a lot, but it was a nice run and the last 2-3 miles were all uphill. Finished in 1:10, so I was pretty happy with that. At least I finally made it through Magic Kingdom on my map!!!

ETA: Just saw a listing for Great Pumpkin 10K, but I can't find a webpage for it. I'll have to keep checking, but maybe I just found a 10K to do!

Just curious, is there any way to figure what kind of corral placing you would be in based on mile per minute? I read in an earlier post, that it is highly recommended to be able to report as fast a speed as possible (based on previous race finishing times) in order to be able to start earlier so that we, "new runners" can get a jump start on the sweepers.

Mamasmurf, that is a great time for your 6 miles and especially with the hills!! Do you know if there are a lot of hills at the DHM?

The only true way to know your corral approximate placement is when the bibs come out. But I believe at one point, it also depends on the speed of those entering that, that anything under 2:00 is usually A, under 2:20 can be B, under 2:40 is usually C and anything above can be else placed. Also, these are just historical rememberances, and varies year to year depending on field. I do not recall the number of corrals, but it also depends on that, the more corrals, the smaller the time split may be. The half on marathon weekend, a 2:46 (fastest you can put without proof) can put you usually in E I believe of H corrals.

Your best bet is to get a 10k in before the race and get your corral assignment changed at the EXPO if it is past the deadline date. Also, do not put down a time in which you cannot achieve, so don't just put 2:46 to get ahead if you plan on finishing in 3:15. It is unfair to those around you and will slow them down.

There really is no way to truly know the placement until you go to the EXPO, but you can have a good idea. I have a proof that puts me with a 1:40 half, which normally would be A, but this race is a B since us male princesses (haha) cannot start in A.

Thanks Dan! That is a good starting point! I truly appreciate the guidance on that one!!

Can someone clarify. I thought in order for corral placement you needed to submit a half marathon time, can I submit my 10k time? If so how do I do this?

Thanks!!

Another corral question- I'm running with 2 friends, if we all put down the same time we should be in the same corral correct? If for some reason we get placed in diff corrals, can you request to switch?

You can submit any race over 10K. email run disney or bring it to the expo and see runner relations- they can change your corral at the expo.

You technically should all get the same corral. However, those with a proof of time that put the time down and those without that put the same time down MAY end up in different corrals. The ones that have proof of time may end up one better, especially if right on the cut-off point. If all have no proof or similar proofs, then should be the same. Also, you can move corrals, but you can only move back corrals, so if one gets D and others get E, the D has to go to E, they won't allow moving forward.

Thanks!

I've never run the course so other princesses will probably know for sure, but from what I've read here there is the uphill before MK and then the ramps towards the end. Otherwise, I think its fairly flat.
